ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Browns and Bills will interview Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone for their head-coaching vacancies.

This one comes as a surprise. Marrone has been at Syracuse for the past four seasons and has put together a career 25-25 record, while going 11-17 in conference play. Before landing the college head-coaching gig, Marrone was the Saints' offensive coordinator under Sean Payton from 2006-08. New Orleans ranked No. 1 in offense in 2008, but that obviously had more to do with Payton. Marrone also coached the Jets' offensive line from 2002-05. Marrone will turn 49 years old in July.

Chiefs waived QB Terrelle Pryor.

The Chiefs didn't draft a signal caller, but decided their quarterback room was too full. Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray now comprise Andy Reid's top four. Pryor's stay with the team lasted all of 42 days. Pryor is less than two years removed from starting nine games for the Raiders, but like Tim Tebow, his lack of passing skills is shutting doors faster than they can open.

Cardinals TE John Carlson is retiring after seven years in the NFL.

One week shy of his 31st birthday, Carlson had one year left on his contract. "After much thought and consideration, my wife Danielle and I know that this is best decision for us," Carlson said in a statement. He did not elaborate on his reasoning, but Carlson has a long and scary history of concussions. It was undoubtedly a factor in hanging up his cleats. Carlson retires with 210 catches for 2,256 yards and 15 touchdowns. He posted a 33/350/1 receiving line last season. The Cardinals have a crater at tight end.

Jameis Winston is reportedly "pushing hard" for LSU T/G La'El Collins to join the Buccaneers.

Better than both Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet, Collins would be a huge addition to Tampa Bay's roster. Coach Lovie Smith also has a long track record of taking chances on players with "off-field concerns," although we're not sure there are even any off-field concerns with Collins. Per Yahoo's Rand Getlin, Winston has called Collins "multiple times" in the last 24 hours.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution projects Tevin Coleman as 1A on the depth chart and Devonta Freeman as 1B.

Coleman, the third-round rookie out of Indiana, brings superior physical skills to the table. The diminutive Freeman will remain in the mix as a change-of-pace option and potential third-down back. Homerun hitter Antone Smith also figures to get some chances. But as long as Coleman keeps his nose in front of this committee, he'll have serious upside thanks in large part to the presence of run-game guru Kyle Shanahan.

ESPN Cardinals reporter Josh Weinfuss says third-round RB David Johnson has a good shot at red-zone work.

Johnson doesn't play as big as his 6'1/224 frame would suggest, but he's still a better option in short yardage than featherweight Andre Ellington. Johnson is also far more talented than Stepfan Taylor and Kerwynn Williams. So even though Ellington is fully expected to retain his starting gig and remain a focal point of the offense, Johnson will have value as a backup to an injury-prone player and a candidate for both inside running and goal-line work.

Coach Rex Ryan had dinner with LSU T/G La'El Collins in Baton Rouge, La. on Monday.

Without a first-round pick over the weekend, the Bills could hit a grand slam by signing Collins. He was viewed as a mid-first-round pick -- the Bills would have picked 19th had they not dealt their pick to the Browns -- before Collins got wrapped up in a murder investigation, even though he isn't viewed as a suspect. If this comes down to recruiting, there may not be a better head coach at it than Ryan. Collins is ready to start day one in the NFL at either tackle or guard.

Speaking Monday, coach Mike Pettine said it's "fair to say" Josh McCown will open training camp as the Browns' starting quarterback.

This comes as no surprise. McCown received $6.25 million guaranteed in the offseason, and Johnny Manziel just got out of rehab last month. After the Browns failed to draft a quarterback over the weekend, it further cemented McCown's place atop the depth chart. However, if McCown looks like the Buccaneer version of himself rather than the Bear, Manziel will make 2015 starts.

Texans signed OLB Whitney Mercilus to a four-year, $26 million contract extension through 2019.

It contains $10.8 million guaranteed, including a $5.25 million signing bonus. The 26th overall pick in the 2012 draft, the Texans declined Mercilus' fifth-year team option and instead locked him up through his age-29 season. Mercilus has been a bit of a disappointment in the sack department, registering 18 sacks through 47 games, but he's coming off a great year against the run.

49ers DE Justin Smith will sit down with team brass "sometime this month" to decide whether he'll play football in 2015.

Even after drafting Arik Armstead at No. 17 overall, the 49ers would love to bring back "Cowboy," who has juice left in his tank and could also be a terrific mentor to college underachiever Armstead. "You'll know in about three weeks or so," Smith said Monday. The 35-year-old didn't say which way he's leaning.
May 4 - 3:54 PM

After his Monday meeting with Baton Rouge police, LSU T/G La'El Collins is still not viewed by investigators as a suspect in the death of Collins' former girlfriend.

Collins "fully cooperated" during his hour-long meeting with police. Collins is expected to be a hot commodity if he's cleared by the investigation. There has never been the slightest indication that Collins was the culprit. Due to the uncertainty of his situation, Collins was not drafted this past weekend. He is seen as a consensus first-round talent at tackle or guard.

Speaking in a Monday radio interview, Jaguars GM David Caldwell indicated suspended WR Justin Blackmon could be done with the team.

Caldwell was asked about the fact that the Jags drafted two more receivers over the weekend, and he confirmed it's indeed an indication of Blackmon's future — or lack thereof — with the team. Beat writer Ryan O'Halloran is confident Blackmon is "DONE-ZO" in Jacksonville. Blackmon is serving an indefinite suspension, and it's unclear when he might apply for reinstatement.
