The Steelers are not counting on ILB Sean Spence (knee) making an impact in 2013.

Spence, a 2012 third-round pick, tore "multiple ligaments" in his left knee in the preseason, costing him his entire rookie year. Before the injury, Spence "looked every bit" to be Larry Foote's heir apparent next to Lawrence Timmons. The Steelers are expected to address the position again this year.

LeGarrette Blount rushed five times for eight yards in the Eagles' second preseason game Thursday night.

He also lost a fumble on one of his two catches. Blount's tenure with the Eagles has gotten off to a rough start. He's missed a number of practices for different reasons and hasn't performed when on the field. Through two preseason games, Blount has rushed nine times for 17 yards (1.89 YPC) with the lost fumble. He also hasn't stood out in practices. While Blount may seem like a value pick in mid-to-late rounds of drafts, it's critical to remember he's no longer in New England's offense, which is the only place he's had success. He's also in a timeshare.

The Ravens have already said Joe Flacco (back) will remain sidelined through next week.

Initially, Flacco wrote the back issue off as a day-to-day thing, but he's been sidelined for a month with no return in sight. All the Ravens have said is that Flacco won't play this preseason and is expected to be ready for the opener. Ryan Mallett has been beyond dreadful through two preseason starts, no matter what lies coach John Harbaugh tries to tell everyone. The Ravens need to stop messing around and find a real backup quarterback.

ESPN's Field Yates reports Patriots third-round DE Derek Rivers has suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Rivers was the Patriots' top pick in this year's draft after they traded out of the first and second rounds. A favorite of the draft community, Rivers had been making big strides in camp and was pushing for playing time in a thinned-out defensive end spot following Rob Ninkovich's retirement. Trey Flowers tops the depth chart while Kony Ealy has been a big disappointment.

Eric Ebron (hamstring) has missed every practice this week.

Ebron briefly returned to practice last Friday ahead of the Lions' preseason opener in which he didn't play. It was expected Ebron would build on that this week, but he's again been a spectator. Ebron hurt his hamstring on the first day of camp and has missed all but one practice since. If the breakout is going to happen, Ebron needs to get his health straight after an injury-riddled 2016.

After making vague comments in Thursday's presser, Bills coach Sean McDermott clarified that Tyrod Taylor's starting job is safe.

"Well, we're always going to evaluate everything," were McDermott's initial words. Anyone who has ever followed football knows what that means. Afterward, however, McDermott told both ABC Buffalo and the Buffalo News that he wasn't considering a change at quarterback. All we really know is, Taylor will be under center Week 1, but he's going to be on the hot seat.

Speaking after Thursday's preseason game, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone refused to commit to Blake Bortles at quarterback, and said he's competing with Chad Henne.

"It's this simple: I'm looking for the best person to lead this offense," Marrone began. "It's right up there for grabs, and either person can take it. ... (Bortles has) got to go earn it." Marrone refused to even shut the door on third-stringer Brandon Allen. They're the comments of a desperate man following a fiasco of a performance from Bortles on Thursday. Bortles seems to have regressed instead of progressed on his dismal 2016, showing stunningly awful ball placement while looking like a quarterback lacking for confidence. Henne was scarcely better, but Marrone could probably convince himself Henne is more manageable than Bortles' unwieldy motion.

Speaking after Thursday night's preseason game, Jay Cutler called DeVante Parker a "faster Alshon."

"Alshon," of course, is Cutler's old battery mate in Chicago, Alshon Jeffery. Cutler certainly targeted Parker like his new version of Jeffery on Thursday night, sending a team-high four attempts in Parker's direction during Cutler's time under center and hitting Parker twice for big plays, one of which was negated by penalty. Parker will indeed take a third-year leap if Cutler is willing to pepper him with targets in tight coverage.

Chad Henne completed 6-of-10 passes for 44 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game Thursday night.

Henne didn't do anything on the field to distinguish himself, but it's important to note that the Jaguars left their first-team offensive line and receivers in the game when Henne entered late in the first half, and left them in with Henne fairly deep into the second half. The decision to do so suggests the Jaguars are at least considering the possibility they'll have to turn to Henne as a better option than struggling Blake Bortles.

Suspended RB Doug Martin rushed five times for 30 yards and a touchdown and caught 2-of-3 targets for 11 yards in the Bucs' second preseason game.

Martin started for the second straight week and caught two checkdowns on Tampa Bay’s first drive. He made a sharp cut in the backfield on his first carry for a six-yard gain, then beat the Jaguars’ defense around the corner on a goal-line score. Martin is suspended for Weeks 1-3, but he shown impressive quickness and cut-back ability in August. He's worthy of a middle-round fantasy pick.

Allen Robinson caught 4-of-8 targets for 34 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game.

Blake Bortles targeted Robinson deep down the left sideline on the Jaguars’ first drive, but the predictably errant pass was uncatchable. Robinson did come down with a wild Bortles pass into heavy traffic for an 11-yard gain and showed his RAC ability on a ten-yard bubble screen, but Bortles missed Robinson twice more on underthrows, bringing out the Jaguars’ boo birds. The good news is Bortles targeted Robinson relentlessly, sending 7-of-13 pass attempts in his direction. Nevertheless, it's a reminder that Robinson's fantasy value is at the mercy of a shot-confidence quarterback.

TMZ Sports reports Raiders CB Sean Smith was arrested and charged with felony assault on Thursday.

The incident allegedly occurred over the July 4 holiday. Officials are saying Smith attacked his sister's boyfriend, beating and stomping on the victim's head. Smith is officially being charged with "felony assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury." He could face up to seven years in prison. NFL Network reported earlier Thursday that Smith has been benched and lost his starting job to T.J. Carrie.
