Free agent DE Dwight Freeney said Peyton Manning has been recruiting him to come to Denver.

Manning and Freeney spent 10 years together in Indianapolis. The Colts didn't even bother to make Freeney a low-ball offer, and he'll be affordable at age 33 coming off an unproductive season. We suspect a two-year, roughly $10 million deal with a decent signing bonus could take Freeney off the market. And he'd presumably like to close out his career with a contender. As a situational rusher to tag team with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil, he'd be a nice fit in Denver.

Free agent CB Champ Bailey plans to continue playing following his Saturday release from the Saints.

"Definitely and he is fully healthy now," were the words of Bailey's agent. "He had a plantar (foot) problem which is resolved. He just missed too much time for the coach's evaluation to be complete." Although Bailey's agent is projecting optimism, it's ominous that Bailey was dealing with a foot issue after his foot limited him to five games for the Broncos in 2013. Now 36, Bailey will have to prove he's 100 percent before another team takes a shot on him.

With an average age of 27.0, the Raiders are the oldest team in the NFL following Saturday's cuts.

With an average age of 25.09, the Rams are the youngest. Yes, the Raiders — who have averaged five wins over the past 11 seasons — are somehow older than the two teams still starting quarterbacks drafted when Bill Clinton was president. It's a testament to the desperation that's gone into constructing Oakland's 2014 roster, and frankly, ridiculous. A team that should be stockpiling upside has instead populated itself with aging veterans other teams declined to pluck off the scrap heap. It's why time is likely running out on the Reggie McKenzie era, and why the Raiders are poised to remain one of the league's worst teams. Only a Rookie of the Year-caliber season from second-rounder Derek Carr at quarterback could make this team appear on the up and up.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports new Bills QB Kyle Orton will make $5 million this season.

As ex-Rotoworlder Chris Wesseling points out, that's as much as Josh McCown is making for the Bucs. The Bills have clearly lost faith in E.J. Manuel, and appear ready to turn to Orton at a moment's notice. Manuel will keep his job to begin the season as Orton gets up to speed on the playbook, but has no room for error. With the Bills hoping to field one of the league's run-heaviest offenses, Orton will be a bottom-barrel QB2 if/when he gets the call to replace Manuel.

Rams waived DE Michael Sam.

Sam's bid to become the NFL's first openly gay player to appear in a regular season game hits a speedbump. The 2013 co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year was productive during the preseason, earning a slightly positive grade from PFF while compiling two sacks, two QB hits and four QB hurries on 133 snaps. But he was always a bubble prospect due to unimpressive athleticism and no role on special teams. The Rams will likely try to get Sam onto their practice squad, but he'd do better to head to a team with less depth and talent on their D-Line.

Saints released CB Champ Bailey.

The Saints are going with undrafted rookie Brian Dixon instead. Bailey was signed to compete for the No. 2 cornerback job, but now 36, couldn't crack the Saints' loaded defense. The Saints must eat Bailey's $500,000 signing bonus. Bailey was limited to five games by a foot injury for the Broncos last season, and struggled when in the lineup. His résumé will get him another look, but he's near the end.
Aug 30 - 3:46 PM

Cowboys waived RB Ryan Williams.

Williams ran well this preseason, but could not overtake second-year RB Joseph Randle for the No. 3 job in Dallas. Williams still has practice squad eligibility, but it is unlikely he makes it through the waiver process. Williams rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries this preseason.

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker reports C Mike Pouncey (hip) will avoid the reserve/PUP list to start the season.

Pouncey would have been forced to miss the first six games of the season if the Dolphins placed him on the PUP list. Avoiding the list means he will be allowed to practice with the team, and could be back as early as Week 4. Samson Satele will fill in at center while Pouncey is out.
Aug 30 - 3:25 PM

Raiders waived WR Greg Little.

Little went into the final preseason game needing a big performance to beat out Brice Butler or Andre Holmes. He instead flopped, catching two passes for 10 yards and getting thrown at on an interception. Little, one of the bigger busts of the 2011 draft, has now been waived by two teams in the last four months.

"Multiple sources" tell Philly.com's Jimmy Kempski that the Eagles are "open" to trading third-string QB Matt Barkley.

This report was echoed by Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. Barkley is a relatively unattractive trade target with limited physical tools, and coming off a ho-hum preseason. Perhaps he'd fetch a sixth- or seventh-round pick.
Aug 30 - 2:36 PM

Chargers waive/injured WR Vincent Brown.

Brown hasn't practiced since July 25, but is reportedly near full health. The Union-Tribune San Diego reports Brown "won't be on the Chargers' 53-man roster," so it sounds like he could end up getting released with an injury settlement. The No. 82 overall pick of the 2011 draft, Brown was an exciting prospect after catching 19 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, but was never the same after missing all of 2012 with a broken ankle. Brown moved like a tight end last season as he limped to a 41/472/1 line across 16 games.
Aug 30 - 12:58 PM

Bernard Pierce (concussion) resumed practicing Saturday.

Pierce is exactly seven days removed from his concussion. He's now firmly on track to be ready for Week 1, where he'll start in place of Ray Rice (suspension). Pierce, a nice fit for Gary Kubiak's one-cut scheme, rushed 11 times for 52 yards and caught one pass for three yards on 37 preseason snaps.
