Chargers assigned the original-pick tender to restricted free agent WR Danario Alexander.

The move is surprising and may indicate San Diego's new front office isn't thrilled with Alexander's knees. Rather than tender Alexander at the first- or second-round level -- and protect themselves with draft-pick compensation if a team tries signing him away -- the Chargers have left themselves open to being pick-pocketed. Alexander was originally undrafted, and San Diego would receive nothing in return if a club signed him to an offer sheet and the Bolts failed to match. Alexander is 24 years old. In a nine-game stretch last year, he racked up 37 catches for 658 yards and seven touchdowns -- numbers that extrapolate to 66/1,170/13 if prorated across 16 games.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson has requested a trade ahead of next week's deadline and "desperately" wants out of Arizona.

Per Schefter, the Cardinals "continue to insist" Peterson will not be dealt, but CBS' Jason La Canfora reports it is indeed a possibility. The Cardinals' overwhelmed new coaching staff has foolishly stopped using Peterson to shadow opposing No. 1 wideouts, while things have gone all the way off the rails on offense. It's a lost season and 28-year-old Peterson wants out while he still has some of his prime left. He's a player who should generate genuine, widespread interest.

Browns coach Hue Jackson does not plan to take over play-calling duties from OC Todd Haley.

"I never said I would take over the play-calling," Jackson said Monday after very much suggesting that on Sunday. "I said I needed to help. I have to be careful not to get too frustrated, too." Jackson is correct that his offense needs a shake up. The problems still have more to do with Baker Mayfield's surrounding talent than anything else. The 2-4-1 Browns are headed to Pittsburgh for Week 8.

NFL Network's Michael Giardi reports Rob Gronkowski (back) could be ready for next Monday's game against the Bills.

Per Giardi, Gronk missed Week 7 with "painful" back spasms that popped up on Friday, but it is believed to be a "short-term thing." Gronk, of course, has a history of back problems, so nothing can be taken for granted. The Pats won't push matters against the expansion-level Bills.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirms Keke Coutee's hamstring aggravation is "not considered serious," but that he's expected to miss Week 8.

It was Coutee who said he's probably going to miss the Texans' short-week matchup with the Dolphins. Coutee battled hamstring woes from early August through late September, so a minor aggravation is a bullet dodged for the Texans. Vyncint Smith will re-join DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller in three-receiver sets in the interim.

Josh Rosen (toe) was held out of Monday's practice.

Coach Steve Wilks has said Rosen won't miss any time, but his Week 8 is off on the wrong foot. The Cardinals do not have to issue an injury report until Wednesday. A "limited" session would have Rosen on track to suit up against the 49ers.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Sony Michel's knee injury is "not considered serious," though it's unclear how long he might be sidelined.

Michel's MRI brought back good news, but no one seems to know just how good. It still appears likely that Michel will miss next Monday's game against the Bills. We might not get our first formal update from the Patriots until Thursday, when they are required to issue their first Week 8 injury report. Fantasy owners should plan on being without Michel for at least game. Considering his history of knee woes, it could still be longer.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Kenny Stills suffered a groin strain Week 7 against the Lions.

Stills suffered the injury on the final drive. Rapoport danced around a timetable, but he did suggest Stills has little chance to play Thursday against the Texans. With Albert Wilson (hip) also out, the Dolphins are down to Danny Amendola, Jakeem Grant, and disgruntled DeVante Parker at receiver.

Tom Brady said his "confidence" in Josh Gordon is "growing and growing and growing."

"I’m excited to see where we’re going," Brady added. Gordon had a few hiccups against the Bears, but he responded with a great, leaping catch on fourth down and a 55-yard catch-and-run to help set up a touchdown. He also played 95 percent of the snaps, besting the season-high of 81 percent he set the week before. The arrow is squarely pointing up for Gordon.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Le'Veon Bell did not report to the team on Monday morning.

Bell had been expected to return during the bye week, but Jason La Canfora reported Sunday it is "more likely" the running back returns to the team ahead of Week 9. It seems like no one except Bell really knows when he plans to report, and it remains possible he takes his holdout all the way through Week 10, after which he has to report to earn an accrued season and become a free agent. It appears as if James Conner will get at least one more game if not more of workhorse usage.

Hue Jackson thinks he needs to be "a little bit more involved" with the offense moving forward.

"I feel like I have to and I want to," Jackson said after the Browns lost to the Bucs in overtime. "That's what I know, so I'm not going to continue to watch something that I know how to do keep being that way, and that's just the truth." Jackson might want to calm down a bit considering his offenses finished 31st and 32nd in scoring the last two seasons, but the unit does have more talent and a much better quarterback this year. With the Browns underachieving for the third season in a row, Jackson has to be feeling the heat.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said Albert Wilson's hip injury could cost him the season.

"The best-case scenario is that he would miss a few weeks," Rosenhaus added. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Wilson is dealing with a labral issue in his hip. With Kenny Stills also injured, the Dolphins are down to Danny Amendola, Jakeem Grant, and a disgruntled DeVante Parker at receiver.
