In a conference call with season-ticket holders, Chargers GM Tom Telesco called Ryan Mathews a "playmaker" and said he expects "big things" from the fourth-year running back.

The new Chargers regime has shown nothing but support for Mathews, but beggars can't be choosers. Telesco inherited one of the NFL's least talented rosters. He called Mathews a "great kid" who "works extremely hard," and said the Colts would "game plan around" Mathews when Telesco worked in Indy's front office. At the Combine, Telesco went so far as to suggest injury-prone Mathews would be San Diego's 2013 "bellcow" runner. The only notable backfield addition has been passing-down specialist Danny Woodhead, giving Mathews perhaps his final opportunity to prove himself an NFL lead back.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Dez Bryant (knee, questionable) is flying with the team to San Francisco.

Bryant basically ruled himself out on Friday, but the Cowboys will keep the charade going for another day. It would be shocking if Bryant suited up against the 49ers.

Rashad Jennings (thumb) is listed as questionable for Monday night against the Vikings.

Coach Ben McAdoo said Jennings will be a "game-day" decision after Friday's practice, so this designation is not a surprise. Jennings is likely more on the doubtful side of questionable, but his status will not be known for certain before Monday. That makes both Jennings and Orleans Darkwa tough to trust, especially considering the matchup.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Jamaal Charles (knee, questionable) still saw some scout-team work this week.

"It’s been good," Reid said of Charles' week of practice. "He’s done a little bit of team, a little bit of scout. He’s mixed it in and out and looks like he’s getting better all the time." Charles will reportedly make his debut this week, but it will be surprising if he sees more than a handful of touches with the bye week on the horizon. Spencer Ware should still operate as the lead back.

ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley said it "wouldn't be surprising" if Terrance West took over as the starter this week.

Coach John Harbaugh talked about making changes in the backfield, and swapping out Justin Forsett for West is the most logical option. Forsett has just 98 yards on 31 carries this season with zero touchdowns. West is not lighting up the scoreboard either (33-for-119), but he has looked like a much better runner. Rookie Kenneth Dixon (knee) should also get a shot once he returns from injury.

Colts owner Jim Irsay said there is no serious issue with Andrew Luck's shoulder.

No serious issue is not the same as no issue. Still, Irsay said Luck will not need surgery, and the shoulder will not cause him to miss a game this year. The Colts will continue to manage Luck's practice reps all season, but there is no reason to believe it will affect him on Sundays.

When asked if Eric Decker's shoulder injury was potentially season-ending, Jets coach Todd Bowles said he is "not sure."

Decker has a partially torn right rotator cuff. "They have to monitor it," Bowles said. "[Doctors] said some people play with it over the course of time. We’ll see how it goes." Surgery is reportedly not an option right now, but it could be if the injury does not improve through rest and rehab. It looks like Decker will miss at least several weeks. Quincy Enunwa needs to be owned everywhere.

ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley expects rookie RB Kenneth Dixon (knee, doubtful) to be "eased back into the mix."

Dixon will not play this week, and he will likely be limited even if he returns against Washington Week 5. Once healthy, Dixon should be in something of a timeshare with Terrance West and perhaps Justin Forsett. Dixon is a good bench stash in deeper formats, but he will likely spend most if not all of the season in a committee.

ESPN Eagles reporter Tim McManus said fifth-round RB Wendell Smallwood should see "plenty of opportunities" this season.

McManus cautions Ryan Mathews will still be the lead back when healthy, but he correctly points out Mathews has struggled to stay on the field throughout his career. "There should be plenty of opportunities for Smallwood over the course of the season," McManus said, "and those opportunities will likely grow if he continues to produce like he did against the Steelers." Smallwood had 79 yards and a touchdown against Pittsburgh. He is a great speculative add in deeper leagues.

ESPN Bears reporter Jeff Dickerson said Jordan Howard will be "more of a committee guy" once Jeremy Langford (ankle) returns.

Langford will be out at least another month, so this is not an immediate concern to Howard's fantasy value. More importantly, Langford was terrible before going down, so Howard could certainly win the starting job outright with good performances the next several weeks. He should start on the right foot against a banged up Lions defense this week.

WEEI's Kirk Minihane reports Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder, questionable) will start Sunday against the Bills.

Garoppolo was always going to start over Jacoby Brissett if healthy, so his shoulder was the only question. After getting in limited practices all week, it seems Garoppolo is ready to get back to work. Tom Brady will return from suspension next week.

Giants coach Ben McAdoo said Rashad Jennings (thumb) could be a "game-day" decision.

Jennings was limited again on Friday. The back said he hoped to have a better idea of his Week 4 status following Friday's practice, but there have not been any reports on what that idea is. It still is unlikely Jennings plays Monday night, but the uncertainty makes it tough to trust him or Orleans Darkwa in a tough matchup.
