Steelers coach Mike Tomlin disputed LBs coach Keith Butler's assessment of ILB Sean Spence (knee surgery) and expects Spence to make "a complete recovery."

Spence is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL, dislocated knee, and nerve damage behind the knee. He'll spend 2013 on injured reserve, and try to come back in 2014. Tomlin is more optimistic than Butler about Spence's future.

NFL suspended Ray Rice for the first two games of the 2014 season.

Rice was arraigned on felony aggravated assault charges following an ugly April domestic incident with his fiancee (now wife) at an Atlantic City hotel. He avoided trial by completing a pretrial-intervention program, and this is his first violation of the league's personal conduct policy. Still, it's a bad look for the NFL as Rice gets off lightly while Josh Gordon faces a 16-game ban for marijuana. As for the on-field fallout, Bernard Pierce will serve as the feature back and quality RB2 against the Bengals in Week 1 and Steelers in Week 2. Rice will have to show improved form to wrestle back his starting job after looking done in 2013 (3.08 YPC).

Eagles LG Evan Mathis is not holding out.

Mathis created a stir around draft time when he asked for a raise on the five-year, $25 million deal he signed in 2012. The Eagles responded by allowing the All-Pro to seek a trade. That's all water under the bridge now, as 32-year-old Mathis attended the offseason program and has now reported to training camp. He'll be a major cog in one of the game's best offensive lines.

Falcons signed WR Roddy White to new four-year contract worth up to $30 million.

It's a three-year extension with $10 million guaranteed. White was entering the final year of a six-year, $48 million deal he signed in August of 2009. Now he's tied to the Falcons through 2017 and will get $18 million over the next two years. It's a long deal for a 32-year-old receiver, but White showed he has plenty left in the tank by averaging 8.6 catches for 100.4 yards with two touchdowns over the final five weeks of last season. The career-long Falcon will remain a focal point of the offense along with Julio Jones, forming one of the game's best receiving duos. White's current fantasy ADP is the fourth-/fifth-round turn, where he is a value pick with lower-end WR1 potential, particularly in PPR leagues.

Josh Gordon will appeal his one-year suspension in a meeting with the NFL on Aug. 1.

Gordon's appeal doesn't have much teeth. Since the latest failed drug test that triggered Gordon's ban, a "passenger" in his car was cited for marijuana and he was arrested in North Carolina on suspicion of DWI. It would be a shock if the 16-game suspension is reduced. The Browns are just hoping to get Gordon back in 2015. He led the NFL in receiving yards last season and became the first player in league history with back-to-back 200-yard receiving games.

Coach Mike Zimmer said Cordarrelle Patterson will continue to return kickoffs despite his increased offensive role.

Patterson was the best kick returner in the NFL last season. "We want our best players to get their hands on the ball as much as possible," Zimmer said. "We’re not going to keep him from returning kicks because he is such a dangerous weapon there." Zimmer suggested the jury remains out on whether Patterson will become an equally dynamic wide receiver. "For him to take the next step," Zimmer said, "we’re going to have to see how he gets off a jam and the things that people will try to do to take him away."

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Terrance West (NFI) will practice on Friday.

This appears to be a true non-story. West says he passed his conditioning test. If he does indeed practice Friday with the other Cleveland first-year players, he'll miss zero meaningful time. The Browns' full-squad workouts don't begin until Saturday. West versus Ben Tate is one of the biggest competitions of summer.

Chiefs signed RB Jamaal Charles to a two-year, $18.1 million contract extension through 2017.

So much for that holdout. Charles is now the second-highest paid running back in the league behind Adrian Peterson and is locked up through his age-31 campaign. On his previous deal, Charles was scheduled to make $3.9 million in salary and bonuses this season. He'll now make $8.3 million in 2014. It's well deserved after Charles put the Chiefs' offense on his back and carried them to the playoffs in 2013. Charles is entering his age-28 season. He's a locked-in top-three fantasy back, along with Peterson and LeSean McCoy.

Giants GM Jerry Reese admitted the team is concerned about first-round rookie WR Odell Beckham's "tweaked" hamstring.

"He missed part of spring ball with a hamstring and he tweaked it yesterday. Obviously there is a concern," Reese said. Beckham first injured the hammy in the spring, and then re-tweaked it on his first route on the opening day of training camp Tuesday. Coach Tom Coughlin said after Wednesday's practice that he has no idea when Beckham will be back on the field. Rookie receivers tend to struggle in year one anyway, so any missed practice time for Beckham is a concern. Jerrell Jernigan ran with the starters in three-wide sets on Wednesday.

Sidney Rice has retired from the NFL after seven seasons.

Rice is just 27 years old, and theoretically should be in the prime of his career. But Rice has missed a total of 31 games in his seven seasons. He's reportedly retiring because of a history of concussions. Rice was knocked out a number of times in his playing career and also was trying to return from a torn ACL. What once looked like a promising career after an 83-catch, 1,312-yard, 8-touchdown 2009 season with the Vikings has ended in sad fashion. Rice caught a total of 243 passes for 3,592 yards and 30 scores. He went to one Pro Bowl.

Daniel Fells has been operating as the Giants' starting tight end through the first two days of training camp.

Fells is the most experienced tight end in camp, as he's made 30 starts in 71 career appearances. However, he was out of the league last season and will turn 31 in September. The Giants may just be giving him the nod early on due to his experience, but it's something worth monitoring. Adrien Robinson has been tabbed the favorite to start at tight end all offseason. He ballooned up close to 290 pounds and reported to camp at 276. Whoever ends up manning tight end -- our money is still on Robinson -- won't be a recommended fantasy option.
