Texans RT Derek Newton (patellar tendon surgery) says he's "doing great" and "will be ready" for the start of training camp.

The single biggest liability on Houston's offensive line last year, Newton will enter camp the favorite to start over journeyman Ryan Harris and rookie Brennan Williams. Newton got knocked around in the 2012 run game, contributing to Arian Foster's YPC decline. But at this point, he's still the Texans' best option.

Packers selected Washington CB Kevin King with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

King (6’3/200) made 36 starts in Washington's secondary, opening his career at safety before developing into a shutdown corner across from Sidney Jones. Tallying 28 career pass breakups and six interceptions, King was largely overshadowed by Jones despite allowing just one touchdown pass over his final 28 games. King ripped up the Combine with an absurd 99th-percentile SPARQ score and 4.43 straight-line speed. King struggles with short-area routes as most plus-sized corners do, but his ceiling is sky high as a long boundary presence with highlight-reel ball skills. On tape, King reminds of Antonio Cromartie in his prime.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, earlier this month the Saints were willing to offer the Rams a second-round pick for CB Trumaine Johnson, but Johnson was unwilling to sign long-term in New Orleans.

Johnson was unwilling to sign with the Saints because he "so badly wanted to remain in Los Angeles" and work things out with the Rams, who also, as Schefter notes, weren't as motivated to move Johnson as the media made it sound in March. Johnson is going to ask for the moon from the Rams in any long-term talks since they've franchised him twice in two years. The Saints nabbed CB Marshon Lattimore at pick No. 11 on Thursday and could look at more corners Friday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Buccaneers, Chargers and Jets have all reached out to the Packers about acquiring the No. 33 overall pick.

Rotoworld draft expert Josh Norris believes the Buccaneers are looking to add a running back while the Chargers and Jets are eyeing a quarterback at the top of the second round. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported earlier that Green Bay would consider Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer at No. 33. It might be a smokescreen, but it's got the Jets and Chargers worried enough to try and trade up. The Bucs are likely targeting Florida State RB Dalvin Cook, who they considered taking at 19 overall before pivoting to Alabama TE O.J. Howard.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns have "touched base" with the Bengals about QB A.J. McCarron.

Rapsheet is hearing that Cincinnati's asking price for McCarron is "high," which explains why talks haven't gotten very far. Cleveland did well to land Myles Garrett with the No. 1 pick, but that obviously doesn't solve the team's quarterback conundrum. The Bengals don't have much incentive to move McCarron, who is under contract through 2018. The Browns also checked in on Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo but were told he's not available.

Browns released TE Gary Barnidge.

His fate was sealed Thursday night when the Browns selected Miami TE David Njoku with the No. 29 overall pick. Barnidge was one of the most productive tight ends in football during his breakout 2015 campaign, leading Cleveland with 1,043 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. His production tailed off dramatically in 2016, but that had more to do with Cleveland's instability at quarterback than anything Barnidge did or didn't do. The 31-year-old won't take long to resurface.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Browns made a last-ditch effort to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo on Thursday night but were again rebuffed by the Patriots.

Nobody has pushed harder for a Garoppolo trade than the Browns, but the Patriots continue to stonewall them. If Tom Brady really plans on playing for another 3-4 years, it makes little sense to stash Garoppolo, who is sure to leave in free agency next offseason. But for whatever reason, Bill Belichick is intent on keeping him as insurance for Brady. The Browns are in dire need of a franchise quarterback after passing on Mitchell Trubisky at No. 1 and later trading the No. 12 pick to the Texans, who used it on Deshaun Watson.

Bears GM Ryan Pace was adamant Mike Glennon will be Chicago's Week 1 starter despite Thursday night's trade up for Mitchell Trubisky.

"Mike's our starting quarterback," said Pace. "Mitch is here to develop." Whereas a team like the Texans calling Tom Savage their starter after trading up for Deshaun Watson is tough to believe, this one is easier to buy. The Bears are paying Glennon $16 million this year, and Trubisky started only 13 games in college. At least until the Bears' season goes south, Glennon's job should be safe. We'd still bet on Trubisky making 2017 starts, likely late in the year.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer is "in play" for the Packers at No. 33 overall.

Holding the top pick of the second round after trading back with the Browns, the Packers are trying to drum up interest in the pick and move back to acquire even more selections. GM Ted Thompson is likely floating the rumor that he is willing to take Kizer in order to get some other QB-needy team to come and take him before they do. In reality, the Packers have far greater holes to fill than taking a project QB like Kizer to sit behind Aaron Rodgers for multiple years.

Coach Andy Reid again backed Alex Smith as the Chiefs' starting quarterback following the selection of Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs have spent much of the offseason propping up Smith, but on Thursday they traded three premium picks to come up 17 spots and take Mahomes. Reid acknowledged that Mahomes isn't ready, and Smith will be the starter for the immediate future. "I don’t worry about Alex on this," Reid said. "Alex knows we trust him. Alex is the starting quarterback. Nothing is going to change there. The kid (Mahomes) is going to take some time. He understands that. But there’s gonna be a day Alex isn’t playing anymore and we’ll need someone to step in and play." Smith's guaranteed money is up after 2017, so Mahomes very likely will be the 2018 starter.
