During Patriots spring practices, "there were times" Shane Vereen lined up as an outside receiver and got matched up with a linebacker.

Patriots Football Weekly's Paul Perillo compares the formation to the one out of which Vereen caught a 33-yard TD pass against Houston in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, beating coverage with a double move. Calling him a "versatile running back with wide receiver skills," Perillo believes Vereen will essentially be New England's No. 2 receiver behind Danny Amendola this year.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin opened his Saturday press conference by praising third-year WR Rueben Randle.

Randle ran a sharp route on his 15-yard touchdown catch Friday night against the Jets, and displayed impressive body control on a 26-yard strike along the sideline. He's the Giants' best hope for big plays this season. Randle remains a value pick at his mid-ninth-round ADP. He's the No. 2 option in the passing game, and at 6'3/210 should be the clear No. 1 on red-zone throws.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that tests have confirmed NT B.J. Raji (torn biceps) is out for the season.

The Packers were hoping to place Raji on short-term I.R. for a possible a late-season impact. Although he hasn't been productive in years, his loss is a blow to Green Bay's defensive line. Raji will end up playing zero regular season snaps after re-signing to a one-year, $4 million deal in the offseason. Josh Boyd and Letroy Guion are in-house candidates to replace Raji. Free agents Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly are likely available for the veteran minimum.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Giants LG Geoff Schwartz is consulting with a foot specialist following an MRI on his dislocated toe.

Rapoport said, "It does not sound good." Depending on the where the toe is dislocated, Schwartz could miss anywhere from a few weeks to the entire season. Rapoport's comments indicate it is closer to the latter. The injury is a huge blow to the Giants' already shaky offensive line. Rookie Weston Richburg should slot in at left guard with Schwartz sidelined.

The Denver Post's Mike Klis reports Montee Ball (appendectomy) will make his preseason debut against the Texans Saturday.

Ball was cleared for full participation in practice Monday, and returned to 11-on-11 drills during Thursday's practice. He was not expected to make his debut until the fourth preseason game, but recovered faster than anticipated. It's great news for fantasy drafters. We wouldn't expect Ball to handle more than a few carries, but his activity is confirmation Ball has fully recovered. He projects as the clear feature back in Denver's juggernaut attack.

Eagles waived DE Alejandro Villanueva, K Carey Spear, DE Frances Mays, TE Blake Annen, OL Michael Bamiro, OL Karim Barton, WR Kadron Boone, WR B.J. Cunningham, OL Donald Hawkins, TE Emil Igwenagu, LB Jake Knott, DE Joe Kruger, S Daytawion Lowe and S Davon Morgan.

A former Army Ranger, Villanueva served three tours in Afghanistan after graduating from West Point. He recorded six tackles and one sack this preseason. Nicknamed Murderleg, Spear was competing with Alex Henery for the place kicking duties. The Eagles' roster now stands at 76 players.

Russell Wilson completed 15-of-20 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed four times for 23 yards and a third score in the Seahawks' third preseason game Friday night against the Bears.

After engineering a touchdown drive capped by Marshawn Lynch's seven-yard score to open the game, Wilson did the same on each of the Seahawks' next three possessions, executing on a seven-yard keeper, tossing a 12-yard score to Jermaine Kearse, and finding Christine Michael for a seven-yard touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. Wilson has been terrific this preseason, completing an incredibly efficient 30-of-39 throws for 360 yards, two TDs, no turnovers, and adding three rushing scores. Wilson has finished as a top-11 fantasy quarterback in each of his first two NFL seasons. He's still only 25.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said following Friday night's preseason game that Chad Henne will start Week 1 against the Eagles.

The Jaguars are sticking to their plan of not rushing Blake Bortles despite him clearly outplaying Henne in the preseason. Henne has completed 25-of-38 passes (65.7 percent) for 231 yards with one touchdown and two fumbles through three games. He'll be on a short leash and need to be an effective game manager to keep the job. Bortles is going to push for starts sooner than later.

Marshawn Lynch ran three times for 16 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's third preseason game Friday night.

This was Lynch's 2014 preseason debut. He looked as sharp as ever, scoring a seven-yard TD on a shotgun draw to cap Seattle's opening drive. That was the only action of the night for Lynch, who was replaced by Robert Turbin on the team's second possession. Lynch's workload should remain intact to open the season, particularly after Seattle gave him a pay raise. He's a fantasy RB1.
Aug 22 - 10:31 PM

Maurice Jones-Drew played just one series in Friday's preseason game against the Packers, rushing three times for 45 yards with a touchdown.

Jones-Drew started and got every snap on his only series. He capped it by impressively jump-cutting into a hole, breaking two tackles and then turning on the jets to outrun the defense for a 40-yard score. Jones-Drew, who has 11 carries for 67 yards with one touchdown and three catches for 36 yards this preseason, is locked in as the starter ahead of Darren McFadden. There's a smidge of low-upside value in his seventh-round ADP.
Aug 22 - 9:53 PM

Rueben Randle caught 2-of-4 targets for 41 yards and a touchdown in Friday's regular-season dress rehearsal.

He was a bright spot for the dysfunctional Giants, showing excellent body control on a 26-yard catch near the sideline before running an excellent route on his 15-yard score. Almost certainly done for the preseason, the Giants' only legitimate red-zone threat finishes with three catches for 53 yards and a score. Currently the WR42, Randle is a value pick in fantasy leagues.
Aug 22 - 9:51 PM

Eli Manning completed 12-of-21 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Jets, also fumbling twice.

The G-Men recovered both fumbles. Manning almost tossed several picks, one of which was a horrid number thrown into double coverage from short distance for absolutely no reason. Thankfully for the Giants, Jets CB Kyle Wilson couldn't keep both feet in bounds. As was the case in 2013, Manning had very little time to throw. If there was good news, it was his connection with Rueben Randle, whom he found for a touchdown and an impressive 26-yard play down the sideline. Manning closes out August 19-of-37 for 188 yards (5.08 YPA), one touchdown and zero picks. With the G-Men's offense looking every bit as dysfunctional as it was last season, Manning is a risky QB2 until further notice.
