ESPN's Ed Werder reports Rob Gronkowski (back surgery) is "looking good" and making "significant progress."

Werder's report comes via "people who have been working with Gronkowski." We don't doubt Gronk is making significant progress, but in this case "significant progress" could be something as little as walking without a limp. Gronk's Week 1 status is still foggy, at best. His progress, or lack thereof, will be hard to judge before training camp, and even then, the Patriots are going to remain tight-lipped. We might not get clarity until the final days of camp.

Kirk Cousins completed 20-of-27 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Redskins' third preseason game.

Cousins looked scared in the pocket early in the game. His first interception came on a screen pass when he forced the ball into a crowd, and he fumbled a snap on the first play of the next drive. Cousins calmed down as the game wore on, but he struggled with ball placement all night. His touchdown came on a tipped ball which should have been intercepted. Cousins was sharp two-minute touchdown drive to close out the first half. Even if Cousins opens the season as the starter, he should not be trusted in standard fantasy leagues.

Duke Johnson suffered a concussion in the Browns' third preseason game Saturday night.

Johnson was seeing his first action of the preseason after sitting out the first two exhibitions with a pulled hamstring. He didn't last long, however, as Johnson took a thundering hit in the first quarter. Johnson had a real chance to earn a significant role, but has been unable to stay on the field. With so much uncertainty, the Browns' backfield is a situation to avoid before the late rounds of drafts.

Ryan Tannehill completed 15-of-19 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Saturday's third preseason game.

It was about as perfect as Tannehill and the Dolphins could have hoped for in the regular-season dress rehearsal. He and Jarvis Landry hooked up five times for 84 yards on six targets, including a long 46-yard gain over the middle where Landry chewed up plenty of YAC. Tannehill found Rishard Matthews for his lone score, hooking up on a quick pass from two yards out. After three preseason games, Tannehill is 33-of-41 (80.4 percent) for 303 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He's looking like a strong back-end QB1 with upside.

Randall Cobb suffered a shoulder injury in the Packers' third preseason game.

Cobb injured his shoulder trying to make a catch on the opening series. He was immediately take to the locker room, and is likely done for the game. The Packers can't afford to lose Cobb after Jordy Nelson's season-ending torn ACL. Ty Montgomery and Jeff Janis will get an extended look in three-wide sets.

Ravens WR Steve Smith was ejected from the team's third preseason game.

Smith took rightful exception to Keenan Robinson piledriving Kamar Aiken at the end of a first-quarter catch. He and Chris Culliver got into an altercation. Both were ejected. Smith burned the Redskins' secondary for a 63-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. He finished with 95 yards on four catches and the touchdown.

ESPN's Adam Caplan expects Duke Johnson to lead the Browns' backfield in touches if he stays healthy.

This is the sense we've started to get as Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West have sleepwalked through the preseason. Both the coaching staff and local media have spent a good deal of the summer talking the third-rounder up, while he has a hold on third-down duties no matter what happens between now and Week 1. With Crowell and West working to cancel each other out, Johnson could start encroaching on their supposed early-down territory.

Falcons signed WR Julio Jones to a five-year, $71.25 million contract extension through 2020.

Jones gets $47 million guaranteed. His new $14.25 million in average annual salary puts Jones slightly ahead of both Dez Bryant and Demayius Thomas, who signed matching five-year, $70 million pacts this offseason. The $47 million guaranteed is $15 million more than Bryant and $12 million more than Thomas, if the initial numbers being reported are correct. All three receivers are equally deserving. Jones has had foot issues in the past, but the Falcons obviously aren't too concerned. With the contract done, Jones can focus on football.

Terrelle Pryor (hamstring) is sitting out Saturday's regular season dress rehearsal.

Pryor has resumed practicing, but his conditioning ins't up to speed. With the Browns' starters unlikely to see much, if any, action in next week's exhibition finale, it means Pryor will end the summer with no meaningful snaps as he makes the transition from quarterback. Pryor has the high-end athleticism the Browns lack basically everywhere else on offense, but he could be too raw for a spot on the 53-man roster. If the Browns keep him, it will be because he flashed convincingly in the offseason program.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports Dolphins LT Branden Albert (knee) is unlikely to return before Week 3.

It's a big blow for the Dolphins' shaky offensive line, and means fill-in Jason Fox will make at least two starts on Ryan Tannehill's blindside. Fox is missing Saturday's regular season dress rehearsal, leaving Tannehill to fend for himself behind his third string left tackle, Dallas Thomas. Albert is still barely 10 months removed from tearing up his knee. Week 3 shouldn't be considered a certainty.
Aug 29 - 6:18 PM

Redskins signed LT Trent Williams to a five-year, $66 million extension.

The deal includes $43.25 million guaranteed. Williams will average $13.2 million annually, placing him ahead of Tyron Smith as the highest-paid left tackle in the league. It's the second big-money extension given out by GM Scot McCloughan after locking up OLB Ryan Kerrigan. The Redskins should have two offensive-line cornerstones to build around with Williams and No. 5 overall pick Brandon Scherff. A three-time Pro Bowler, Williams is signed through 2020, his age-32 season.
Aug 29 - 3:44 PM

The Newark Star-Ledger's Eliot Shorr-Parks said OLB Marcus Smith (hamstring) is on the roster bubble.

When asked if Smith would be on the final roster, Shorr-Parks put his chances at 51 percent. Smith was working as the primary backup at outside linebacker before injuring his hamstring, but coach Chip Kelly was noncommittal on Smith's roster status following the injury. Kelly has already said he had little to do with drafting Smith in the first round last year, and the coach has a history of cutting ties with big-name players. The Eagles' lack of depth at outside linebacker should allow Smith to make the roster, but he needs to make an impact this season.
