Vikings first-round WR Cordarrelle Patterson has spent the majority of training camp with the second team.

In three-wide sets, the receivers have been Greg Jennings, Jerome Simpson and Jarius Wright. It's not a surprise. The wildly talented yet extremely raw Patterson is going to need some time to close on Simpson for the starting "X" job. It will eventually happen, but no one can say just how quickly the rookie will gain polish. Patterson has far more Dynasty value than re-draft.

Marshawn Lynch will hold out of Seahawks training camp as he seeks a new contract.

Bizarrely, the news was broken by former teammate Michael Robinson on NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live. Lynch has been making noise about his contract all offseason, but it's still a surprise after he reported to June's mandatory minicamp. Perhaps emboldened by Jamaal Charles' successful "holdout," Lynch is going to find the Seahawks much less likely to cave than the Chiefs. He has his age and the presence of Christine Michael and Robert Turbin behind him to thank. Now 28, Lynch is due a reasonable $5 million this season, with another $500,000 available through per-game roster bonuses. At least for the moment, Lynch's mid-second round ADP is no longer looking like a potential bargain.

Titans LG Andy Levitre underwent an appendectomy on Thursday, and will be sidelined two weeks.

In a vacuum, it's a minor issue, but it sets Levitre further behind after he missed the Titans' entire offseason program as he recovered from hip surgery. He'll be up against it to get in shape for Week 1. That being said, Levitre has yet to miss a game since being the No. 51 overall pick of the 2009 draft. He should be ready for the opener.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Lions are "not optimistic" about agreeing to an extension with Ndamukong Suh before the season.

That's bad news, as Suh's $22.412 million cap number means he'd cost $26.7 million to franchise tag next offseason. One of the league's most dominant players, Suh holds all the cards in long-term talks.

Raiders placed CB D.J. Hayden (foot surgery) on the active/PUP list.

There is no timetable for his return. The Raiders initially claimed Hayden was recovering from an ankle injury when he was first spotted in a walking boot in early June, but it was actually a stress fracture. It's unclear when he went under the knife. It's a humongous blow for a player who was trying to move past an injury-ruined rookie campaign, and further grays the Raiders' defense. Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown are now the presumptive starters at corner. Hayden is only 24, but his NFL career is off to as poor a start as possible.

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky reports walk-year WR Jordy Nelson is seeking "at least" $10 million per season in long-term talks.

Nelson has no intention of handing out another discount. Nelson has been one of the league's most underpaid players since signing his four-year, $13.989 million deal in the fall of 2011. The $10 million demand shouldn't surprise the Packers, who have roughly $13 million in cap space. A deal could be worked out before Week 1.

Speaking Thursday, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Matt Cassel is the team's No. 1 quarterback heading into camp.

That's been the expectation all along. No. 32 pick Teddy Bridgewater should give Cassel a run for his money, but the Vikes appear content to go into Week 1 with the veteran under center. However, we fully expect Bridgewater to make starts this season, likely early.

Browns activated RB Terrance West from the active/non-football injury list.

The rumor was that West failed his conditioning test, but he denied that. It doesn't matter now. He's on the active roster, working out with the team and will be ready to battle Ben Tate for the starting running back job when full-squad work begins Saturday. West's brief stint on active/NFI will have no impact on his progress.

Jonathan Stewart pulled his hamstring prior to training camp and will miss the first 1-2 weeks.

Coach Ron Rivera says the pull isn't as serious as some hamstring injuries, and added Stewart will remain on the active roster. Still, it's no way to start a season for a player that's missed so much practice time due to nagging injuries the past few years. DeAngelo Williams will soak up first-team reps as he surges to the front of this committee attack.

Coach Chuck Pagano said he'd like to have a "bell cow" at running back this season.

In the same breath, Pagano said he isn't against employing a running back by committee. The message is clear. Ideally, Trent Richardson will find the form that made him the third overall pick in the 2012 draft, and become a 260-carry workhorse this season. But he'll be on a short leash, with Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard both ready to fill roles if Richardson faceplants again. For now, we've placed T-Rich 26th among running backs in our Draft Guide -- a ranking that will rise if he separates in camp.

Suspended Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon was arrested on marijuana possession charges Wednesday night.

According to police in Edmond, Oklahoma, Blackmon was stopped for a traffic violation and officers could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the car. After a search, marijuana was found and Blackmon was taken into custody. It's the latest transgression for the Jaguars wideout, who was suspended indefinitely last October following repeated violations of the substance-abuse policy. This certainly won't help Blackmon as he aims to get reinstated for the 2015 season. Blackmon has now been suspended three times since 2010.

NFL suspended Ray Rice for the first two games of the 2014 season.

Rice was arraigned on felony aggravated assault charges following an ugly April domestic incident with his fiancee (now wife) at an Atlantic City hotel. He avoided trial by completing a pretrial-intervention program, and this is his first violation of the league's personal conduct policy. Still, it's a bad look for the NFL as Rice gets off lightly while Josh Gordon faces a 16-game ban for marijuana. As for the on-field fallout, Bernard Pierce will serve as the feature back and quality RB2 against the Bengals in Week 1 and Steelers in Week 2. Rice will have to show improved form to wrestle back his job after looking done in 2013 (3.08 YPC).
