Dolphins released CB Richard Marshall.

Another cog of GM Jeff Ireland's two-year masterplan down the drain. The move clears $4.55 million in salary. Overpaid to the tune of a three-year, $16 million contract in 2012, Marshall was limited to four games by a back injury; four games for which he "earned" $6 million. Marshall is hard-nosed and versatile, but was miscast as an outside starter. Ireland's admission of defeat is made more stunning by the fact that he has no clear alternative opposite Brent Grimes. Perhaps Ireland is ready to throw second-rounder Jamar Taylor into the fire, but career slot-man Dimitri Patterson is the best bet. Marshall could easily surface in Cleveland with Ray Horton, under whom he had his best NFL season in 2011. Marshall, 28, can play both safety and corner.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Nelson Agholor "really stood out" this week in practice.

The comments were unprompted, suggesting Agholor's performance was good enough to be at the front of Pederson's mind. A good week of practice is certainly a positive sign, but Agholor needs to build on it with a strong showing Saturday against the Colts.

Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem before Friday night's preseason game.

This is a non-story, but it is something the 49ers could use against Kap if they decide to move on. "The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," the team said in a statement to Pro Football Talk. "It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem." The real story is Kaepernick was dreadful on the field Friday night, almost guaranteeing he will open the season as a backup.

According to the Sacramento Bee, "all signs" point to Blaine Gabbert getting the Week 1 start versus Los Angeles.

It's going to be a tough road for Blaine Train, who starts off versus the Rams, at the Panthers, and at the Seahawks. The 49ers then host the Cowboys and Cardinals in Weeks 4-5. Gabbert has done nothing to win the starting quarterback job this preseason, but no superior alternatives have stepped forward. Gabbert starting could be good news for the fantasy value of safety valve TE Vance McDonald.

Carlos Hyde suffered a concussion in the first half of the 49ers' preseason game Friday night.

Hyde didn't get to play much with Colin Kaepernick because he left early with the brain injury. Hyde will now be placed into the NFL's concussion protocol. He has 15 days to receive clearance in time for Week 1 against the Rams.

Asked Friday night if the 49ers have considered releasing Colin Kaepernick, coach Chip Kelly replied, "There's never been a conversation about cutting Colin Kaepernick."

Kaepernick was downright dreadful in Friday night's preseason game, looking entirely uncomfortable in new coach Chip Kelly's offense. If the 49ers aren't going to start Kaepernick, they have three options -- trade him, pay him $12 million not to play, or grant Kaepernick his release. If the 49ers opt to keep Kap around, that $12 million figure will be an awfully large bullet to bite.

Torrey Smith was not targeted in the 49ers' third preseason game.

Smith is a part of the 49ers' starting offense, but you wouldn't know it if you based your takes solely on preseason games. He's seen exactly one target through three exhibition affairs, and has a goose egg to show for it. Smith revealed this week that his 2015 effort sagged because he felt like Colin Kaepernick "wasn't looking for him." Blaine Gabbert isn't looking at Smith, either.

Jared Cook caught 4-of-5 targets for 54 yards in the Packers' third preseason game Friday night.

Cook was a terrifying weapon for the 49ers' defense, shredding them down the seam between the twenties. Most importantly, Cook dominated first-team snaps, seeing 19-of-26 reps compared to just two for Richard Rodgers with the Aaron Rodgers group. Cook has always possessed a tantalizing size-speed combination, and has long been an inconsistent producer with technical flaws. He's late-round flyer material in hopes the light flipping on with Rodgers is real.

Carlos Hyde rushed four times for 30 yards in the 49ers' third preseason game.

If the Niners put Hyde on ice for the preseason finale, he'll finish August with 85 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries (5.67 YPC). Hyde ripped off a 27-yard run on Friday night, setting up Quinton Patton's three-yard TD. Hyde managed three yards on his other four runs. Hyde is locked in as San Francisco's bellcow back. We'll be interested to see whether the 49ers' ineptitude cuts into Hyde's fantasy production. He's got plenty of ability in his own right.

Colin Kaepernick completed 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards and rushed four times for 18 yards in the 49ers' third preseason game.

Playing behind Blaine Gabbert, Kaepernick failed to assert himself as a legit contender for the Week 1 starting job. While he made a few innocuous plays with his legs, Kaepernick looked uncomfortable in the pocket and failed to generate a single first down. Kaepernick remains likely to make starts at some point this year, but Gabbert will be the starter on Opening Day.

Steelers RE Cameron Heyward suffered a high ankle sprain in Friday night's third preseason game.

For his part, Heyward promised he would "be there Week 1." High ankle sprains can be 4-6 week injuries, but they also vary in severity. It would be a major blow to Pittsburgh's defense if Heyward were to miss the opener against Washington. Heyward was Pro Football Focus' No. 6-rated 3-4 defensive end among 57 qualifiers last season. The Steelers are thin on the defensive line.

49ers WR/KR Bruce Ellington suffered a strained hamstring in Friday night's preseason game.

He missed the second preseason game with an ankle injury. Ellington's hamstring strain looked serious, as he walked gingerly off the field before being met by trainers on the sideline with a towel over his head. Ellington has mammoth opportunity, but he simply can't stay off the shelf.
