Report: Pats may activate Gronkowski on Sat.

NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Patriots are "leaning toward" activating Rob Gronkowski (back) from the active/PUP list on Saturday.

Activating Gronk from PUP would mean not only that he's been cleared to practice, but would confirm he'll avoid reserve/PUP to open the season. Per Breer, Gronk remains unlikely to play in football games before "at least" late September. Still, signs point toward Gronkowski missing no more than four games, and we wouldn't be surprised if he returned after two or three. We'll have many more Gronk updates leading up to Week 1 and beyond.

OC: Left tackle Tunsil's 'natural position'

Dolphins OC Clyde Christensen said left tackle is sophomore Laremy Tunsil's "natural position."

Christensen added his confidence is "extremely high" Tunsil will succeed at left tackle. Considering they traded Branden Albert during the offseason, the rest of the organization clearly agrees. The Dolphins are set at tackle, but the interior of the line remains a big concern, especially with C Mike Pouncey's (hip) health in question.

OC expects 'gigantic year' out of DeVante

Dolphins OC Clyde Christensen expects DeVante Parker to have a "gigantic year."

Christensen added the team is "seeing what we were hoping to see" out of Parker, who is "healthy" and "hungry." The offseason is new, but the refrain remains the same. To be fair, Parker is clearly talented and had spurts of great play last season, but he has struggled both to stay healthy and to consistently perform when on the field. He will remain a risk-reward proposition in fantasy this season.

49ers' Aaron Lynch reports 20 lbs overweight

According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn, 49ers pass rusher Aaron Lynch reported to the team "a cool 20 pounds overweight."

Cohn named Lynch as the likeliest Trent Baalke-era holdover to get cut this offseason, just ahead of Vance McDonald, whom the new regime is known to have dangled in draft-weekend trade talks. Lynch missed four games to a substance abuse suspension last season, then battled a high ankle sprain for most of the year. Lynch has been an enigmatic underachiever since college.

Jay Cutler insists retirement is 'permanent'

Jay Cutler said his retirement is "permanent."

"I don't really see anything else happening," said Cutler of his playing career. "I'm happy with where I am, you know, in my life and really in the future going forward. So, yeah, we can go ahead and say it. It's permanent." Cutler was more or less forced out of the league after generating little to no interest on the open market. He seems committed to his new role at Fox Sports, though it would be a little surprising if Cutler turned down a starting job should an opportunity arise. Cutler turned 34 last week.

Tavon Austin (wrist surgery) out for OTAs

Tavon Austin will miss OTAs after undergoing surgery on his left wrist.

Austin underwent arthroscopic surgery on Thursday. He should still be ready for training camp in late July. Despite his 4.34 speed and theoretical playmaking ability, the former first-round pick has never developed into anything more than a gadget player. Apparently now scheduled to play outside receiver under rookie coach Sean McVay, Jackson is going to miss valuable practice time in the Rams' new offense.

Mike Zimmer declines to name a starting RB

When asked who will start at running back in 2017, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said, "We've got a long way to go before we make any determinations on that."

Latavius Murray signed a three-year, $15 million deal in March, only to watch the Vikings trade up for Dalvin Cook in the second round. As Cook is a far superior talent, Murray will be nothing more than a late-round flier in 2017 re-draft leagues. He's also missing most of the offseason due to ankle surgery. Cook is the fantasy running back to target in Minnesota.

Rams want Tavon to be more DeSean Jackson-ish

The Rams want Tavon Austin to become more of a downfield threat similar to DeSean Jackson.

Easier said than done. Jackson is one of the premier deep threats the sport has seen over the last decade. While not big at 5'10/175, Jackson still plays bigger than the 5'9/174 Austin. Both ran similar forties as straight-line speedsters, with Jackson blazing a 4.35 coming out of Cal and Austin clocking a 4.34 out of West Virginia. New Rams coach Sean McVay obviously got a ton out of Jackson in Washington and hopes to develop Austin into more as a receiver after Jeff Fisher's staff seemed clueless how to use him, using Austin more as a gimmick.

Malcolm Butler 'badly wanted' to play for NO

CSN New England's Mike Giardi reports CB Malcolm Butler "badly wanted" to be traded and play for the Saints.

"He wanted to be traded," Giardi said. "He knew what the money was in New Orleans. So when we talk about him, 'Oh he's happy. It's nice that he's joined his teammates again.' He had no other choice. He wanted New Orleans. He wanted them badly. They couldn't work out a deal. So what's he supposed to do now? Sit at home? No, you suck it up. You have to turn yourself back into a Patriot at least for a year." Butler reported for voluntary workouts this week, showing he likely won't be a holdout case come training camp. He'll want to put together another great season to get paid the big money he's been seeking the past two years.

Jamison Crowder likely to get to 1,000 yards?

CSN Mid-Atlantic's JP Finlay believes "this should be the year" Jamison Crowder gets to 1,000 receiving yards.

"He'll be inside when we go three receivers, for sure," coach Jay Gruden said. "When we go two receivers, we'll mix-and-match however we do it. We're going to try to keep him on the field as much as possible." Crowder played 73.6 percent of the snaps last season and recorded a 67-847-7 line. If he approaches the 80-percent mark for snaps, 1,000 yards is well within reach considering the losses of Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson.

Jay Cutler hangs up cleats, joins FOX Sports

Free agent QB Jay Cutler announced his retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons.

He'll follow Tony Romo into broadcasting, joining FOX Sports. Cutler will be in the booth on Sundays with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis. Burkhardt is FOX's No. 2 play-by-play man behind Joe Buck. Word is Cutler wanted to continue playing, but he simply didn't draw any interest. Drafted by Mike Shanahan's Broncos in a 2006 trade up, Cutler spent three years in Denver before Josh McDaniels sent him packing. He was sent to the Bears for Kyle Orton and a couple of first-round picks. Cutler played eight seasons in Chicago. He went 68-71 in his career, throwing for 32,467 yards and a 208:146 TD:INT ratio. Cutler made one Pro Bowl and went to the playoffs once. We bet he'd come back to play if a quarterback-needy team called.

Christian McCaffrey first 1st-rounder to sign

Panthers signed first-round RB Christian McCaffrey to a four-year, $17.224 million contract.

The offensive weapon is the first first-round pick to sign. As is the case with all first-round contracts, the deal includes a fifth-year team option for 2021. Sort of a bizarro Tavon Austin coming out of West Virginia, McCaffrey is an explosive runner who doubles as a dangerous receiver. He's an element that's been missing from the Panthers' offense for years, and one few teams have. McCaffrey is justifiable as the No. 1 overall pick in rookie Dynasty drafts.
