Eagles waived/injured CB Curtis Marsh.

The 2011 third-rounder broke his hand in the Eagles' second preseason game. He'll revert to injured reserve if/when he clears waivers. Marsh has made 22 career appearances, but zero starts.

When asked about his knee after his first padded practice in over a year, Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith said it "feels 100 percent."

Veteran Sean Lee also added that Smith "looked great." A lock to be a top-5 pick in the 2016 NFL draft before a bowl-game knee injury and subsequent nerve damage, Smith was drafted in the early 2nd round by the Cowboys as a project player. According to Peter King of the MMQB, Smith's nerve is now 80 percent regenerated, and Jerry Jones said he would use a first-round pick on the linebacker if the draft was today. He will likely remain limited throughout camp, but Smith is on pace to contribute this season.

Patriots RBs coach Ivan Fears is searching for a running back "to play power football."

"We have enough guys we know can play finesse football," Fears said of his depth chart. "Somebody has to play power football for us. We have to find out who is going to do that." Free-agent addition Mike Gillislee would seem like the best candidate to replace LeGarrette Blount in the power role, but it sounds like his position coach has yet to be convinced. Whoever wins the goal-line role will carry immense fantasy upside after Blount rushed for 18 touchdowns last season.

Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal believes second-round rookie DeShone Kizer is a "better bet" than Cody Kessler to win the starting job.

Kessler will get the first reps during training camp, but the competition is wide open with Kessler, Kizer, and even Brock Osweiler "legitimate candidates" according to Ulrich. With quietly a solid talent base on offense, the Browns could surprise this season if they get the quarterback situation figured out.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Travis Kelce can do "everything a wide receiver can do."

Kelce was the Chiefs' most effective receiver last season, and with Jeremy Maclin out of the picture this year, it sounds like he could be leaned on even more heavily in the passing game. "I think every year you will see him probably get a little bit more here and there," Reid said. "We can use him even a little bit more (in the red zone) and just keep staying creative with it." Kelce is only behind Rob Gronkowski among fantasy tight ends.

Broncos coach Vance Joseph said Devontae Booker (wrist) should be ready for the regular season.

Booker is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday to repair a fractured wrist, an operation which carries around a six-week recovery. That timeline puts him right up against it to be ready for Week 1, but it at least sounds like he will avoid the reserve/PUP to begin the season. A fourth-round pick last year, Booker perhaps could have pushed C.J. Anderson and Jamaal Charles in camp, but he is now destined for a backup role.

Ravens OL John Urschel announced his retirement after three seasons in the NFL.

Only 26 and slated to compete for a starting job, this decision comes as a surprise, and it is likely not a coincidence the announcement comes two days after a scary study about the prevalence of CTE in NFL players was released. A doctoral candidate in mathematics at MIT, Urschel has a bright future off the football field. With Urschel out of the running, Ryan Jensen is the favorite to take over at center.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said they are working on "different ways to get the ball in (Christian McCaffrey's) hands."

Rivera said this after calling two consecutive screens to McCaffrey on the first day of training camp, a previously seldom-used play. Seemingly an awkward fit for an offense which rarely targets running backs in the passing game, McCaffrey could help improve the attack dramatically. After a down season and being hit too much for his liking, QB Cam Newton will be prompted to get the ball out of his hands more quickly, likely to his new weapon McCaffrey.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Rob Gronkowski (back) will practice without "limits."

It is not a surprise after he was a "full-go" during OTAs and minicamp, but it is still nice to get positive updates on Gronk's health. Clearly the No. 1 fantasy tight end when healthy, Gronk has scored at least 10 touchdowns in every season he has played at least 10 games. Unfortunately, that has happened just twice in the last four years.

Cam Newton threw at practice for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery.

Cam did not make any deep throws, but it is another step in the correct direction. "Everything felt good, but we have a long way to go to get where I know we can be," Newton said. "Tonight was just fun getting out on the grass in front of the fans and throwing it around a little bit." The Panthers are likely to take it slow with Newton, but it seems like he will be ready to go well before even the third preseason game.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports free agent OG Orlando Franklin is "discussing a deal" with the Saints.

He met with them on Wednesday after visiting the Jets on Tuesday. With LT Terron Armstead (shoulder) out until at least October, adding Franklin could allow LG Andrus Peat to kick out to tackle if first-rounder Ryan Ramczyk is not up to the job.

Cowboys signed RB Ronnie Hillman.

A middling back who spent time with two teams last year, Hillman signing with a team is not a big story in and of itself, but it is interesting the Cowboys are adding to a reasonably deep backfield. The move could hint at some concern about Ezekiel Elliott's availability for the first couple games. Dallas could also once again look to move Alfred Morris after failing during the draft.
