Rams waived LB Jonathan Stewart.

An undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M, Stewart was inactive for Sunday's opener. His release clears a roster spot for Isaiah Pead, who is returning from a one-game suspension.

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Zach Berman expects the Eagles to "feature" Darren Sproles in the passing game this season.

According to Berman, new OC Frank Reich said that every week during meetings, the coaching staff would ask, "How can we get this guy the football?" regarding Sproles. The 33-year-old caught 55 passes last season, but could jump back up into the 65-75 range similar to his New Orleans days. Ryan Mathews isn't going to play on third downs, leaving all of that work to Sproles.

Patriots released WR Nate Washington.

Washington was buried on the depth chart in New England and didn't even make it to final cuts. The 33-year-old (on Sunday) had some big games for the Texans last season on his way to a 48-661-4 line, but wasn't brought back and settled for a minimum deal with the Patriots. He should be able to land another look-see at some point this season once injuries hit other teams.

Patriots waived C Bryan Stork.

Stork was a fourth-round pick in 2014 and started 13 games for the Patriots that season, including the Super Bowl win. He made another seven starts last season but missed the first eight weeks of the season with a concussion. Stork has a lengthy history of concussions, and missed a few days of practice earlier this month with one. David Andrews is now expected to be the Pats' center.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette expects Eli Rogers to open the season as the Steelers' No. 3 receiver.

Bouchette calls Sammie Coates and Darrius Heyward-Bey "backups" behind Rogers, Markus Wheaton, and Antonio Brown. It's possible Bouchette's mind could change after Pittsburgh's third preseason game, where Ben Roethlisberger will see his first action this August. At this moment, however, Rogers is in the driver's seat to start in the slot in Week 1, with Wheaton moving outside.

Suspended free agent RB Karlos Williams visited the Jets.

It's Williams' first-known visit since he cleared waivers on Monday. ESPN New York's termed the visit as "due diligence," and says a deal is not imminent. Suspended and overweight, Williams will be signing at the nadir of his value if he finds a new home this week. His best course of action may be getting his body right and building his extremely slim leverage.

Titans TE Craig Stevens is retiring after eight years in the league.

The No. 85 overall pick of the 2008 draft, Stevens is forfeiting $2 million by hanging it up. Of course, it's quite possible the decision comes after the Titans told him he wasn't going to make the team. A blocking specialist, Stevens spent his entire eight-year career in Tennessee, catching 60 passes and scoring six touchdowns.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden has "total expectation" Josh Doctson (Achilles) will be ready for Week 1.

"He did the route tree today, which is very positive," Gruden said Tuesday. "I have total expectation that he’s going to be ready Week 1, possibly the fourth preseason game, but we’ll still see. Like I said, it’s a new injury to me." Gruden also refused to rule out the reserve/PUP list in the same press conference, but it seems like coachspeak in the full context of his comments. The Redskins open the season 20 days from today.

Joe Flacco (knee) will play in Saturday's preseason game against the Lions.

In the final stages of his recovery from a torn ACL, Flacco sat out Baltimore's first two exhibition tilts. "You need to get back out there (and) you need to get your mind used to getting ready for a game," Flacco said. "And then, yeah, I need to get over that last hurdle, which is going out there and being a live target for guys to hit and see how I react to it." It's important for the entire offense, as the third preseason game serves as a team's "regular season dress rehearsal," so to speak. Flacco has said his knee still isn't 100 percent, but he hasn't missed a rep this summer.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the draft pick Denver traded for Mark Sanchez was a conditional pick.

That means the Broncos will not owe the Eagles anything if they decide to release Sanchez at final cuts. After losing out to Trevor Siemian for the starting job, Sanchez now appears to be competing with rookie Paxton Lynch for his roster spot. The Broncos could also save $3.5 million by releasing Sanchez.

Breshad Perriman (knee) said he has "no doubt" he will be ready for Week 1.

Perriman reportedly "showed little effects" of his knee injury in his return to practice Tuesday. He is unlikely to play in the third preseason game this week, but it would not be surprising if he is cleared for team drills in the near future. Even if he is healthy enough to play Week 1, Perriman is unlikely to have a big role coming off a lost rookie season.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett confirmed Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) will play Thursday.

Adam Schefter reported as much on Monday, but it is nice to get the confirmation. Garrett said the plan is for Zeke to see 8-to-12 touches in his NFL debut. Even with Alfred Morris shining in the preseason, Elliott should open the season as the clear workhorse in Dallas.
