Browns WR Travis Benjamin (questionable, thigh) is hopeful he can still return punts and run some deep routes in Week 2.

Benjamin was limited in practice this week. In the Browns' opener, Benjamin started at split end (Josh Gordon's position) and caught three balls for 44 yards. He's not a fantasy factor outside of the deepest return-yardage leagues.

Michael Vick is working as a coaching intern for the Chiefs this summer.

Vick said in June that he wanted to get into coaching, and his former coach Andy Reid is giving him his first opportunity. Vick is a bright football mind who loves to compete, but his controversial past could make him a tough sell as a coach.

Texans placed LT Duane Brown on the reserve/did not report list.

It means Brown is subject to $40,000 per day in fines. Brown is due $9.4 million heading into his age-32 season, though none of it is guaranteed. This year probably isn't the concern for Brown, who is signed through 2018. He's almost certainly looking for some guaranteed dough heading into next season.

Ex-Browns and Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins has told the Patriots he's retiring.

He's going to pursue a Ph.D. in economics. The longtime Ohio slot man was on the outside looking in of the Patriots' 53-man roster, as the team's top-five receivers were already set. Often unheralded, Hawkins' effectiveness had been on the wane. He turned 30 in March 2016. A 2008 UDFA, Hawkins hangs up his cleats with 209 receptions, all of which came from 2011-16.

All charges stemming from ex-Cowboys WR/KR Lucky Whitehead's petty larceny case have been dropped.

This is a bad look for the Cowboys, who instantly cut Whitehead when news of the (false) accusation broke. The warrant for Whitehead's arrest was "rescinded" when Virginia police discovered they "had the wrong guy." Whitehead was a largely-ineffective gadget player/special teamer, anyway, but you can be sure the media is going to let the Cowboys have it, particularly in light of their unflinching stance that Ezekiel Elliott is innocent of multiple far-more-sinister alleged crimes.

Broncos hired ex-coach Gary Kubiak in a scouting/advisor role.

Kubiak stepped away from head coaching following a number of health issues, but he always made it known he wanted to stay in football in some capacity. One of GM John Elway's best friends -- as well as Elway's backup during their playing days -- Kubiak will now be a trusted personnel hand for Denver's front office.

NFL.com reports Greg Olsen will play out his contract.

Olsen also said, "after (ex-GM Dave) Gettleman was fired he did not want to be a further distraction." Despite his slow contract negotiations probably contributing toward Gettleman's firing, Olsen is now oddly accepting his current contract. As the most reliable component of the Panthers' offense and one of the NFL's top tight ends Olsen certainly deserves to be paid as such.

Redskins WRs coach Ike Hilliard continued to talk up fourth-year WR Ryan Grant at the start of training camp.

The Redskins had a rift over Grant when Scot McCloughan was still GM; McCloughan preferred speedier, more athletic Rashad Ross, while Grant was a coaches' pet and remains so. "I'm easily Ryan Grant's biggest fan," said Hilliard. "He's always been our best pure route runner out of everyone, even with Pierre (Garcon) and DJax (DeSean Jackson) here." Grant worked ahead of first-round pick Josh Doctson throughout Redskins OTAs and minicamp.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco writes that Vance McDonald "is not assured a roster spot" entering training camp.

The new 49ers brass went as far as to openly admit they tried trading McDonald before, during, and after the draft. The 49ers have "already identified" rookie George Kittle "as a legitimate red-zone option," and are expected to give Kittle every opportunity to beat out McDonald for the starting job.

Suspended RB Kenneth Dixon will undergo meniscus surgery on Tuesday.

The standard timeline for a torn meniscus is 6-8 weeks depending on the severity of the tear. While Dixon is already suspended the first four games for violating the league's policy on PEDs, having to return from meniscus surgery is another barrier on his path to playing time. Suffering his third knee injury in 12 months -- he injured and later aggravated a multi-week MCL sprain last season -- Dixon's longevity may be in question. Dixon can be scratched off fantasy draft cheatsheets while Terrance West and Danny Woodhead maintain job security entering the season.

Marcus Mariota plans to play at 215 pounds this season.

Mariota came out of Oregon at 222 and is listed at that weight on the Titans' website. The team told him to bulk up to the 225-230 range this year, but Mariota instead opted to side with his personal trainer and instead cut weight. The thinking is that Mariota will be faster and more elusive to avoid hits, but 215 is borderline-fragile for an NFL quarterback and could make Mariota even more prone to injury if he does get squared up for a big hit by a defender. It will be interesting to see if the Titans force him to put on weight during camp.

CSN Philly's Reuben Frank expects Wendell Smallwood to have a "pretty significant role" with the Eagles this season.

Smallwood has been talked about as potentially needing a big camp to even make the team after the Eagles signed LeGarrette Blount and drafted Donnel Pumphrey, but Frank believes the team "really likes" Smallwood. Last year's fifth-rounder appeared to be the No. 4 back in the spring. However, there are roles to be carved out in this backfield, and Blount isn't going to be ridden hard like he was in New England. This likely will remain a committee. And an unreliable one at that. Blount and Darren Sproles are the only two being drafted in 12-team leagues right now.
