Calvin Johnson (knee) said he was "real close" to playing in Sunday's Week 5 loss to the Packers.

Johnson practiced on a limited basis Friday and wasn't ruled out until 90 minutes before kickoff. "Real close," he said. "Obviously we weren't all the way there today, so working hard to get back." Johnson added that he didn't think the injury was a long-term issue. With Megatron sidelined, the Lions scored just nine points and got nine catches for 93 yards out of their wideouts. He has an excellent chance to return for Week 6.

The Browns named Brian Hoyer their Week 1 starter.

"He was the clear leader from the beginning. We've maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player," explained coach Mike Pettine. Johnny Manziel was unable to close the gap, starting with off-field distractions during OTA season and culminating with a pair of uninspiring preseason performances. Hoyer, who will turn 29 in October and is coming off an ACL tear, will now serve as a bridge starter until the Browns deem Manziel ready. We suspect that will come as soon Week 5, as Cleveland faces Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore before its Week 4 bye. Hoyer will be a decided underdog in each of those games.

Coach Chip Kelly downplayed LeSean McCoy's "small version" for turf toe Tuesday.

McCoy practiced in full on Monday, a surefire sign that this ailment is nothing to be worried about. If the Eagles' medical staff had any concern at all, they would have held him out as the regular season opener is more than two weeks away. "He's fine," coach Chip Kelly said. "It's not as big of an issue as I think anybody has made it out to be. ... There’s a lot of questions about a toe in August that I think is way overblown." Owners looking for protection can snag Chris Polk, although he has to get over his nagging hamstring injury soon to secure the backup job.

Eagles acquired RB/KR Kenjon Barner from the Panthers in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2015.

The pick is likely contingent on Barner making the 53-man roster. Barner was on the outs in Carolina, but played for Eagles coach Chip Kelly at Oregon, and offers some badly needed depth at running back. His acquisition could be curtains for Chris Polk in Philly if Polk can't get healthy. Polk has missed the majority of camp with a hamstring injury. A 2013 sixth-rounder, Barner managed only six carries across eight games. He missed time with a foot issue.

Profootballtalk reports there have been no settlement talks in the Josh Gordon case.

It's been two-plus weeks since Gordon's appeal was heard, but the sides have yet to come to the bargaining table. They still could, but it would seem to grow less likely by the day. Absent a settlement, Gordon is looking at an all-or-nothing proposition (16 games if the ruling is upheld, zero if it's not). Reports from last week suggested the case should be settled before the end of this week.

Rookie RB Jeremy Hill is practicing at Bengals camp after suffering a shoulder injury in Saturday night's preseason game.

Hill tweeted after the game that his shoulder is "fine," and he's practicing without limitations. Bengals beat writer Paul Dehner has projected Hill for 10-15 carries per game this season, but to this point Giovani Bernard has handled every single first-team exhibition game rep. We'll keep a close eye on Hill's usage in the Bengals' regular season dress rehearsal. The rookie power back has 52 yards on nine carries (5.78 YPC) and two receptions for 13 yards through two preseason games. Bernard has 10-32, with two catches for 15 yards.

Browns rookie RB Isaiah Crowell has two carries for three yards through two preseason games.

It's not a good sign for the ballyhooed UDFA, who is running behind Ben Tate, Terrance West, and Dion Lewis, while Chris Ogbonnaya is an impact special teamer. We've seen it suggested the Browns want to "hide" Crowell in an effort to stash him on the practice squad, but everyone in the NFL knows who Crowell is. (And no one drafted him.) He seems like a roster long shot in Cleveland.

Jets placed WR Shaq Evans on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.

Earlier reports had Evans as waived/injured, which would have exposed him to waivers. Evans is recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum. Reports in early August had Evans battling drops and "rarely making plays." Standing in at 6-foot-1, 213 pounds, Evans has average speed (4.51). He won't be guaranteed a roster spot in 2015.

Steelers re-signed DE Brett Keisel.

The move was spurred by the Cardinals' interest in the 13-year veteran. The Steelers had remained open to re-signing Keisel all offseason, but must have been waiting for his price to come down. The Cardinals finally gave Keisel some leverage. Keisel started 12 games last season, and will push LE Cam Thomas. Keisel wasn't terribly effective in 574 snaps last season, and is best left to a rotational role.

J.J. Watt believes he's "outplayed" his rookie contract, and wants an extension.

Signed through 2015, Watt said he hasn't been involved in long-term talks, but would "get involved if I have to." NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Texans have been "very engaged" in talks, and that the sides have been "making progress." Watt has made a strong case to be the league's highest-paid defender, but the fact that he has two years left on his deal has to lessen the urgency for the Texans, even if they want to keep their superstar happy.

Steelers signed RT Marcus Gilbert to a five-year, $30 million contract extension through the 2019 season.

A 2011 second-rounder, Gilbert had been heading into the final year of his rookie deal. It's a lot of money for a player who has never been close to an elite talent. The Steelers — who have been obliterated by offensive-line injuries in recent years — must really value the fact that Gilbert started all 16 games last season. However, Gilbert himself missed 11 games with an ankle injury in 2012. Still only 26, Gilbert has room to grow over the next half decade.

Cardinals activated DB Tyrann Mathieu (knee) from the active/PUP list.

As is the case with Rob Gronkowski, there is "some optimism" Mathieu will be ready for Week 1, but it's far from a guarantee. Nevertheless, the Honey Badger is now looking like a good bet to get on the field before October. His presence would be a huge boost for a defense that just lost LE Darnell Dockett for the season, and is looking far-less imposing on paper than a year ago.
