Vikings waived QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

The move clears a roster spot for Josh Freeman. A third-year undrafted free agent, Bethel-Thompson has never appeared in an NFL game.

Chris Polk (hamstring) is inactive for the Eagles' preseason finale.

Polk returned to practice last Saturday, but still isn't healthy enough to perform in a game setting. It's a potentially ominous sign for Polk's roster chances. He's going to end up missing the entire preseason. The Philly Inquirer recently forecasted Polk to make the final 53, but that's certainly become a question mark with Henry Josey and Matthew Tucker playing well. LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles are locks, and Kenjon Barner may be, too.

Blake Bortles started Thursday's preseason finale against the Falcons, completing 4-of-6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Bortles' score was a 57-yard strike to fellow rookie Marqise Lee. Bortles looked ahead of schedule all preseason, and finishes 32-of-51 for 521 yards (10.2 YPA), two touchdowns and zero interceptions. It's looking less and less likely that the Jags will be able to follow through on their plan to "redshirt" Bortles this season. Starter Chad Henne simply isn't good enough.

The NFL has stiffened its penalties for domestic violence, instituting a six-game suspension for a first-time offense and "lifetime ban" for a second.

It's a direct response to the blistering criticism the league received after banning Ray Rice for only two games earlier this summer. Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted he "didn't get it right" in the Rice case. Now, a first time domestic-violence offense is no longer viewed as less serious than smoking marijuana. For a "lifetime" ban, an offender can "petition for reinstatement after one year."

Cowboys waived CB B.W. Webb.

It's an admission of failure from owner/GM Jerry Jones, who made Webb the No. 114 overall pick of last year's draft. The move is in spite of the Cowboys' depth issues at cornerback. Webb was routinely roasted on his 185 defensive snaps as a rookie, and hadn't looked improved in the spring or preseason. His age (24) and draft pedigree should get him another look in relatively short order, however.

ESPN reports Adrian Peterson called Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in June to tell him he was interested in playing for Dallas "at the end of his tenure with the Vikings."

"Well, I understand, Adrian," Jones reportedly told AD. "I'd like that, too ... Well, I love your story. I love your daddy's story. I've always respected what you've been about. I've always been a fan of yours." Peterson is from Palestine, Texas, which is two hours southeast of Dallas. It's unclear if the call constituted tampering, but Jones believes it does not. Now 29, Peterson is signed with the Vikings through 2017, but is unlikely to make it to the end of his deal.

ESPN's Ron Jaworski says Robert Griffin III's mechanics have "regressed" in the "fundamental way of throwing the football."

"His throwing slot, his footwork, his inability to remain consistent in that," Jaws said. He's the latest to pile on RG3 following an injury-hindered 2013 season and poor 2014 preseason. While it's true backup Kirk Cousins has outplayed Griffin this month, it's laughable to suggest a quarterback controversy. The starter has more than enough talent to adjust out of the gimmicky Shanahan scheme and into the pocket passer Jay Gruden needs him to be. Strong weapons and unique running ability will keep Griffin's fantasy floor high in the meantime.

Aaron Dobson (foot) is expected to make his preseason debut in Thursday's game against the Giants.

Dobson's recovery from his left foot surgery finally appears complete. Now he can begin a quest to regain the starting outside receiver job he held last year before these foot woes shut him down. Eventually, we'd expect Dobson to pass up Kenbrell Thompkins and Brandon LaFell, giving him plenty of stash appeal. In the six games Dobson played at least 50 snaps last year, he averaged 4.5 catches for 60.8 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Sources tell ESPN that suspended Josh Gordon is exploring the possibility of playing the rest of the year in the Canadian Football League.

The Browns would have to give Gordon permission to do this, which the Cleveland Plain Dealer says they will not do. Understandably so, as they'd be exposing their most talented player -- one they have under contract very cheaply through 2016 -- to injury without any on-field benefit. Furthermore, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says CFL rules don't allow players under NFL contracts to play in the CFL -- only cut players can go north of the border. It's a nice idea for Gordon to stay in shape and have some structure during his suspension, but this one is not going to happen.

Jarrett Boykin has held strong as the Packers' No. 3 WR through training camp.

Davante Adams, a second-round rookie, was expected to push Boykin for the third receiver job in the Packers' three-wide base. Instead, the incumbent has held serve. "Clearly, Jarrett Boykin has taken the next step," coach Mike McCarthy said. "I just love the way he plays. He's had an excellent camp." In the third preseason game, Adams exclusively played with the backups, confirming he's the No. 4 receiver right now. Boykin's upside is capped by all the mouths to feed in Green Bay, but his ADP is way down in the 11th round. There's value there.

The Chronicle-Telegram confirms Jordan Cameron is set for a "much larger role" with Josh Gordon suspended for the entire season.

In the two games that Gordon was banned from last year, Cameron totaled 14 catches for 203 yards and one touchdown. Now he'll be the centerpiece of the Browns' passing attack for all 16 games, as Andrew Hawkins/Miles Austin/Nate Burleson are complementary players. Cameron, who ranked third among tight ends in targets last year with 117, will see that number push even higher this season. He's a value pick in the middle rounds.

Quinton Patton ran ahead of Stevie Johnson during the 49ers' third preseason game.

The No. 3 spot behind starters Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin appears to be a fluid situation, with Brandon Lloyd also in the mix. There's even been speculation that Johnson and his $3.65 million salary could be a surprise cut Saturday. Patton, a 2013 fourth-round pick, has one catch for 10 yards through 78 preseason snaps. Johnson has two catches for 11 yards on 36 snaps.
