ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers and free agent Anquan Boldin are "closing in on a deal," and a "deal is expected to get done."

The 49ers have said multiple times that re-signing Boldin is a priority, and Boldin has expressed a desire to stay in San Francisco. The two sides likely met at the Combine to get talks moving. Boldin led the 49ers in receiving in 2013 but is going on 34 years old. He's unlikely to get anything more than a two- or three-year contract. It would be a shock if Boldin didn't have a new deal by March 11.

"Multiple sources" tell Philly.com's Jimmy Kempski that the Eagles are "open" to trading third-string QB Matt Barkley.

This report was echoed by Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. Barkley is a relatively unattractive trade target with limited physical tools, and coming off a ho-hum preseason. Perhaps he'd fetch a sixth- or seventh-round pick.

Bernard Pierce (concussion) resumed practicing Saturday.

Pierce is exactly seven days removed from his concussion. He's now firmly on track to be ready for Week 1, where he'll start in place of Ray Rice (suspension). Pierce, a nice fit for Gary Kubiak's one-cut scheme, rushed 11 times for 52 yards and caught one pass for three yards on 37 preseason snaps.

Jets waived WR Stephen Hill.

Hill got off to a hot start in spring practices but fell off a cliff once preseason got underway. He reeled in just 3-of-8 targets for 42 yards, while dropping two passes. Drops have been a recurring theme for the No. 43 overall pick in the 2012 draft. Hill has dropped nine of his 97 career targets. Hill still has enough raw talent to draw looks on waivers. He has ideal size (6'4/215) and speed (4.36 forty). We're not ruling out Hill eventually developing into a serviceable receiver somewhere outside of New York. He's only 23.

Dolphins waived RB Daniel Thomas and RB/KR Marcus Thigpen.

The Fins finally admit their mistake on Thomas, whom ex-GM Jeff Ireland traded up to select in the second round of the 2011 draft. Thomas almost single-handedly held Miami's running game hostage for the past three seasons. The team will now move forward with Lamar Miller, Knowshon Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams, although we wouldn't rule out the Dolphins putting in a waiver claim on a tailback toward the end of final cuts.
Aug 30 - 11:28 AM

Free agent OLB James Harrison has retired from the NFL after 12 seasons.

Harrison's play really fell off the past couple years, but he was one of the most feared pass rushers of the past decade. A former UDFA out of Kent State, Harrison registered 66 career sacks and 29 forced fumbles. He was the heart and soul of the Steelers defenses of the late 2000s. Harrison, 36, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro. Harrison will likely ink a one-day contract with the Steelers after spending the first 11 years of his career in Pittsburgh before joining Cincinnati in 2013. He'll likely fall short of the Hall of Fame, but should land in the Steelers' Ring of Honor.
Aug 30 - 11:13 AM

Undrafted rookie WR Corey Washington has made the Giants' 53-man roster.

We wouldn't be surprised to see Washington play in three- or four-wide sets to open the year. The 22-year-old from tiny Newberry College finished the exhibition season with 10 catches for 155 yards and four touchdowns. A favorite of small-school receiver guru Matthew Freedman, Washington has 4.50 speed and a 10-foot-5 broad jump at 6-foot-4, 214. He's worth a serious look in Dynasty leagues.
Aug 30 - 10:51 AM

Lions waived RB Mikel Leshoure.

Leshoure, a 2011 second-round pick who lost his power-back gig to Joique Bell last year, simply didn't have a role. He doesn't play on special teams and Reggie Bush, Bell and Theo Riddick will hog all the carries in Detroit. GM Martin Mayhew almost certainly regrets not trading Leshoure to the Colts last year when he had the chance. In three seasons, he has 217 carries for 807 yards (3.71 YPC) with nine touchdowns and 34 catches for 214 yards. Leshoure, still just 24, should land on his feet despite a rough preseason that saw him average 3.69 YPC and lose a fumble.
Aug 30 - 10:37 AM

Browns released RB Chris Ogbonnaya.

The Browns didn't want to expose five-star talent Isaiah Crowell to waivers, so they make a surprising cut of a versatile player who can lead block, catch and run in a pinch. Now they only have raw rookies Terrance West and Crowell behind starter Ben Tate. It's good news for the projected catch total of Tate and West, as Ogbonnaya was thought to be headed for a third-down role. Dion Lewis was also cut Saturday.
Aug 30 - 10:22 AM

Browns released WR Nate Burleson.

Burleson, 33, was bothered by a hamstring injury all camp, rendering him unable to compete against the likes of Charles Johnson and Travis Benjamin. Still, it's a terrible sign for Burleson that the league's most WR-needy team didn't feel the need to keep him. Having appeared in just 15 games over the last two years, Burleson will find very little interest on the open market.
Aug 30 - 10:05 AM

Redskins waived or released RB Lache Seastrunk, RB Chris Thompson and RB Evan Royster.

All three lost out to UDFA Silas Redd for the No. 3 running back job behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu. Seastrunk has practice squad eligibility, and will likely be stashed there if he clears waivers. Thompson has an intriguing enough skill set that he might get a look if healthy.
Aug 30 - 8:55 AM

Bills signed QB Kyle Orton to a one-year contract.

Orton, 31, made one start for the Cowboys last season in an NFC East win-or-go-home tilt with the Eagles. He scattered check down after check down amongst 46 pass attempts, completing 30 for 358 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Orton was on the verge of retirement before the Bills lured him back into the league, but it's fair to wonder if he eventually becomes a better option than E.J. Manuel. For now, Orton will push Jeff Tuel for the backup job.
