Bengals DT Geno Atkins (knee) has been cleared to practice and removed from the active/PUP list.

There was previously precious little information regarding Atkins' recovery from his Week 9 torn ACL. He'll likely be limited to side work and individual drills for the next few days and sit out most of the preseason, but Atkins should be all systems go for Week 1. Atkins' return is a massive boost for the defense.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports the Jets and free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick have had "no recent talks."

Werder confirms the sides "remain far apart" with "no resolution expected soon." It's a similar report to Ian Rapoport's on Tuesday. Geno Smith will open training camp as the Jets' starting quarterback. If Geno practices well and earns respect in the locker room, perhaps the Jets would move on altogether from Fitz.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Pete Dougherty estimates Eddie Lacy reported to camp "around the 240-pound mark."

It would be a 20-pound loss from where Lacy reported at last year's camp. Lacy's ideal weight is 231-235, but he could easily sweat off several more pounds practicing in the heat. He remains a boom-bust investment in fantasy drafts.

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson considers Arian Foster "the favorite" to start over Jay Ajayi as long as Foster is "completely healthy."

Coach Adam Gase has been talking up Foster the past week-plus since Foster signed a one-year deal. Ajayi is an unproven second-year pro who has some injury concerns of his own and doesn't have the pass-game skill set Foster possesses. Foster is no sure thing from an injury standpoint, either, but signs have been pointing to him being very involved since signing a contract last week. At this point, Foster will probably have to get hurt and/or Ajayi will need an incredible summer to take back the top spot on the Dolphins' depth chart.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch believes Carlos Hyde could be in line for a "monster season" as long as he's able to stay healthy.

As noted by Branch, LeSean McCoy carried the ball 300-plus times each of coach Chip Kelly's first two seasons in Philadelphia, so he's not afraid to ride one running back. And Kelly's scheme is similar to the system Hyde ran in college at Ohio State. The problem for Hyde, however, has been the injury bug; he's missed 11-of-32 games since entering the pros. Also working against Hyde will be the 49ers' lackluster roster, which will likely put them behind on the scoreboard often. If -- big "if" -- Hyde is able to stay healthy, he should easily push 250 carries. Hyde looks like a high-end RB2 with RB1 upside and no clear backup to spell him.

Seahawks agreed to terms with coach Pete Carroll on an extension through 2019.

The deal pairs Carroll with GM John Schneider for the next four seasons. Carroll is the league's oldest coach — really — but arguably its second best behind Bill Belichick. Carroll has staked his claim to being one of the greatest football minds of all time in Seattle, building on the amazing success he had at USC. The Seahawks have made the playoffs 5-of-6 years on Carroll's watch, advancing to two Super Bowls. Going on 65, it's possible this is Carroll's final contract.

The Sacramento Bee reports Colin Kaepernick (shoulder surgery) has been cleared for training camp.

Kap underwent shoulder, knee and thumb operations, but it was his shoulder that needed final clearance. Kap could still begin camp on active/PUP as he gets his conditioning in order, but he'll be ready to battle Blaine Gabbert for the starting job. Amazingly, Gabbert seems to have a leg up. It's a crazy world out there.

Free agent Andre Johnson worked out for the Titans on Tuesday.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, it was a "feel-out session for both sides." Whatever it was, it signals further displeasure with sophomore Dorial Green-Beckham. Johnson appeared to have very little left in 2015, but a young team like the Titans would value his intangibles more than most.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports Jordy Nelson's left knee issue is tendinitis, and "not (currently) viewed as serious."

Per Werder, the issue is believed to be the result of Nelson "overcompensating during rehab" from his torn right ACL. Minor side ailments are common as players return from serious injuries like ACL and Achilles' tears, but can often linger. The Pack are putting on a brave face about Nelson's Week 1 status, but it shouldn't be taken for granted.

Browns placed WR Josh Gordon (quad) on the active/NFI list.

Gordon got hurt working out on his own this summer, and will miss a "couple of weeks." It's obviously the last thing Gordon needed after being suspended 27 of the past 32 games. Gordon figures to be on a strict snap count when he returns from his latest ban in Week 5, and should be worked in slowly. Gordon can't be drafted as more than a WR3 who could pay off as something more in the second half of the season.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirms OLB Justin Houston (knee, PUP) will likely miss all of training camp.

Houston is just four months removed from having his (apparently not torn) ACL repaired. He was slapped with a 6-12 month timeline in February. Houston is a strong candidate for the reserve/PUP list.
Jul 26 - 4:22 PM

Bengals placed TE Tyler Eifert (ankle surgery) on the active/PUP list.

Eifert doesn't appear to be a candidate to revert to reserve/PUP, costing him six games, but he's questionable for Week 1. We probably won't have a good idea of Eifert's status for the opener until the waning days of camp.
