Dimitroff, Pioli want McDaniels as Falcons HC

Multiple league sources tell CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels' candidacy for the Falcons' head-coaching vacancy is being "championed" by GM Thomas Dimitroff and top assistant Scott Pioli.

Both Dimitroff and Pioli worked with McDaniels in New England. La Canfora suggests Dimitroff and Pioli's futures could be tied to whether or not McDaniels is hired. Rex Ryan is believed to rank high on owner Arthur Blank's candidates list, but obviously has no ties to Dimitroff or Pioli. If Blank opts for Ryan over McDaniels, it could create tension in Atlanta's front office.

Brandon Marshall plans to play two more years

Brandon Marshall said he plans to play two more seasons.

"That's the first time I've said that," Marshall said to the crowd at the NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo. "Two more years and I'm gone." The timeline is not surprising considering Marshall just turned 33 and signed a two-year deal in March, but announcing the decision this early is a bit odd. That said, Marshall was simply responding to a question and clearly did not plan to announce his retirement at the event. It is very possible he changes his mind between now and 2019.

Bills interviewing Eagles' Trey Brown for GM

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Bills are interviewing Eagles director of college scouting Trey Brown for their vacant GM position.

Brown joins Panthers assistant GM Brandon Beane and Texans director of player personnel Brian Gaine as the known candidates to replace Doug Whaley. Brown spent three years with the Patriots as a scout before joining the Eagles in 2013. He was promoted to his current position last season. No matter who Buffalo hires, new coach Sean McDermott will remain the most important voice in the room.

OC: Ajayi's receiving skills '200%' better

Dolphins OC Clyde Christensen said Jay Ajayi's receiving skills are "200 percent" better than this time last year.

Christensen was seeing nothing but rainbows and unicorns on Saturday, adding there is "no question" Ajayi will be better this season after spending several minutes praising DeVante Parker, Laremy Tunsil, and Julius Thomas. The passing game is one area Ajayi can improve on his breakout season after averaging just 5.6 yards on 27 receptions. Ajayi was good out of the backfield in college, however, so it will not be surprising if he is able to take a step forward in that department. Already a locked-in RB1, Ajayi could push into the top five if he sees a big bump in targets.

OC: Julius Thomas can add '10, 12 touchdowns'

When asked about what Julius Thomas can add to the offense, Dolphins OC Clyde Christensen said, "10, 12 touchdowns."

"That's what he added in Denver," Christensen continued. Thomas caught 24 touchdowns in 27 games playing for now Dolphins coach Adam Gase in Denver, and the tight end said he feels "at home" after being reunited with Gase this offseason. Thomas' touchdown total dipped to four in nine games last year with the Jaguars, the same total Dion Sims managed on limited targets in Miami. If he can stay on the field, Thomas should easily better that total this year.

OC expects 'gigantic year' out of DeVante

Dolphins OC Clyde Christensen expects DeVante Parker to have a "gigantic year."

Christensen added the team is "seeing what we were hoping to see" out of Parker, who is "healthy" and "hungry." The offseason is new, but the refrain remains the same. To be fair, Parker is clearly talented and had spurts of great play last season, but he has struggled both to stay healthy and to consistently perform when on the field. He will remain a risk-reward proposition in fantasy this season.

49ers' Aaron Lynch reports 20 lbs overweight

According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn, 49ers pass rusher Aaron Lynch reported to the team "a cool 20 pounds overweight."

Cohn named Lynch as the likeliest Trent Baalke-era holdover to get cut this offseason, just ahead of Vance McDonald, whom the new regime is known to have dangled in draft-weekend trade talks. Lynch missed four games to a substance abuse suspension last season, then battled a high ankle sprain for most of the year. Lynch has been an enigmatic underachiever since college.

Jay Cutler insists retirement is 'permanent'

Jay Cutler said his retirement is "permanent."

"I don't really see anything else happening," said Cutler of his playing career. "I'm happy with where I am, you know, in my life and really in the future going forward. So, yeah, we can go ahead and say it. It's permanent." Cutler was more or less forced out of the league after generating little to no interest on the open market. He seems committed to his new role at Fox Sports, though it would be a little surprising if Cutler turned down a starting job should an opportunity arise. Cutler turned 34 last week.

Tavon Austin (wrist surgery) out for OTAs

Tavon Austin will miss OTAs after undergoing surgery on his left wrist.

Austin underwent arthroscopic surgery on Thursday. He should still be ready for training camp in late July. Despite his 4.34 speed and theoretical playmaking ability, the former first-round pick has never developed into anything more than a gadget player. Apparently now scheduled to play outside receiver under rookie coach Sean McVay, Jackson is going to miss valuable practice time in the Rams' new offense.

Mike Zimmer declines to name a starting RB

When asked who will start at running back in 2017, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said, "We've got a long way to go before we make any determinations on that."

Latavius Murray signed a three-year, $15 million deal in March, only to watch the Vikings trade up for Dalvin Cook in the second round. As Cook is a far superior talent, Murray will be nothing more than a late-round flier in 2017 re-draft leagues. He's also missing most of the offseason due to ankle surgery. Cook is the fantasy running back to target in Minnesota.

Rams want Tavon to be more DeSean Jackson-ish

The Rams want Tavon Austin to become more of a downfield threat similar to DeSean Jackson.

Easier said than done. Jackson is one of the premier deep threats the sport has seen over the last decade. While not big at 5'10/175, Jackson still plays bigger than the 5'9/174 Austin. Both ran similar forties as straight-line speedsters, with Jackson blazing a 4.35 coming out of Cal and Austin clocking a 4.34 out of West Virginia. New Rams coach Sean McVay obviously got a ton out of Jackson in Washington and hopes to develop Austin into more as a receiver after Jeff Fisher's staff seemed clueless how to use him, using Austin more as a gimmick.

Malcolm Butler 'badly wanted' to play for NO

CSN New England's Mike Giardi reports CB Malcolm Butler "badly wanted" to be traded and play for the Saints.

"He wanted to be traded," Giardi said. "He knew what the money was in New Orleans. So when we talk about him, 'Oh he's happy. It's nice that he's joined his teammates again.' He had no other choice. He wanted New Orleans. He wanted them badly. They couldn't work out a deal. So what's he supposed to do now? Sit at home? No, you suck it up. You have to turn yourself back into a Patriot at least for a year." Butler reported for voluntary workouts this week, showing he likely won't be a holdout case come training camp. He'll want to put together another great season to get paid the big money he's been seeking the past two years.
