Report: Eagles interested in Schwartz for DC

SI's Don Banks reports the Eagles have interest in Jim Schwartz for their defensive coordinator opening.

Schwartz hasn't hidden his desire to return to coaching for 2016, and the Eagles have openings after parting with Chip Kelly's staff, where Billy Davis served as defensive coordinator. Schwartz runs a Wide 9, 4-3 scheme and might change the complexion of Philadelphia's defense, which played 3-4 and man coverage under Davis. Schwartz's defenses in Tennessee and Detroit were attacking, aggressive units with a penchant for racking up sacks.

Tavon Austin (wrist surgery) out for OTAs

Tavon Austin will miss OTAs after undergoing surgery on his left wrist.

Two Tavon blurbs in one day—what a time to be alive. Austin won't be available for OTAs after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on Thursday but he should be ready to roll by the time training camp opens in July. Despite his elite speed and playmaking ability, the former first-round pick has never developed into anything more than a gadget player. Perhaps he'll have more success under new head coach Sean McVay.

Mike Zimmer declines to name a starting RB

When asked who will start at running back in 2017, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said, "We've got a long way to go before we make any determinations on that."

The Vikings signed Latavius Murray to be Adrian Peterson's successor but now he faces competition from second-round pick Dalvin Cook. Murray was used as a short-yardage hammer and goal-line back in Oakland last year and may occupy a similar role in Minnesota. With Cook standing in his way, Murray will be difficult to trust as anything more than a boom-or-bust RB2 in fantasy.

Rams want Tavon to be more DeSean Jackson-ish

The Rams want Tavon Austin to become more of a downfield threat similar to DeSean Jackson.

Easier said than done. Jackson is one of the premier deep threats the sport has seen over the last decade. While not big at 5'10/175, Jackson still plays bigger than the 5'9/174 Austin. Both ran similar forties as straight-line speedsters, with Jackson blazing a 4.35 coming out of Cal and Austin clocking a 4.34 out of West Virginia. New Rams coach Sean McVay obviously got a ton out of Jackson in Washington and hopes to develop Austin into more as a receiver after Jeff Fisher's staff seemed clueless how to use him, using Austin more as a gimmick.

Malcolm Butler 'badly wanted' to play for NO

CSN New England's Mike Giardi reports CB Malcolm Butler "badly wanted" to be traded and play for the Saints.

"He wanted to be traded," Giardi said. "He knew what the money was in New Orleans. So when we talk about him, 'Oh he's happy. It's nice that he's joined his teammates again.' He had no other choice. He wanted New Orleans. He wanted them badly. They couldn't work out a deal. So what's he supposed to do now? Sit at home? No, you suck it up. You have to turn yourself back into a Patriot at least for a year." Butler reported for voluntary workouts this week, showing he likely won't be a holdout case come training camp. He'll want to put together another great season to get paid the big money he's been seeking the past two years.

Jamison Crowder likely to get to 1,000 yards?

CSN Mid-Atlantic's JP Finlay believes "this should be the year" Jamison Crowder gets to 1,000 receiving yards.

"He'll be inside when we go three receivers, for sure," coach Jay Gruden said of Crowder. "When we go two receivers, we'll mix-and-match however we do it. We're going to try to keep him on the field as much as possible." Crowder played 71 percent of the snaps last season and recorded a 67-847-7 line. If he approaches the 80-percent mark for snaps, 1,000 yards is well within reach, considering the losses of Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson. Crowder is a dark horse to finish near the top of the league in targets.

Cutler talked w/ Jets, Texans before retiring

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, free agent Jay Cutler had previously talked with the Jets and Texans before ultimately retiring on Friday.

As Schefter puts it, the discussions with the Jets were "real," but the talks with Houston were "less promising." There was a report last weekend that the Texans weren't even picking up Cutler's phone calls prior to the draft, and once they drafted Deshaun Watson that sealed Cutler's fate. In a statement Friday, Cutler said he's in between being forced out of the league and not having the desire to keep playing. If a team calls him this season with the opportunity to start, Cutler would probably jump at the situation as long as he's still in playing shape.

Jay Cutler hangs up cleats, joins FOX Sports

Free agent QB Jay Cutler announced his retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons.

Cutler will follow Tony Romo into broadcasting, with Cutler joining FOX Sports. He'll be in the booth on Sundays with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis. Burkhardt is FOX's No. 2 play-by-play man behind Joe Buck. As for Cutler, word is he wanted to continue his playing career, but simply didn't draw any interest. Drafted by the Broncos in a trade-up in 2006, he spent three years in Denver before demanding a trade when Josh McDaniels was hired. He was sent to the Bears for Kyle Orton and a couple first-rounders. Cutler played eight seasons in Chicago. He went 68-71 in his career, throwing for 32,467 yards and a 208:146 TD:INT ratio. Cutler made one Pro Bowl and went to the playoffs just once. We bet he'd come back to play if a team called his phone.

Christian McCaffrey first 1st-rounder to sign

Panthers signed first-round RB Christian McCaffrey to a four-year, $17.224 million contract.

The offensive weapon is the first first-round pick to sign. As is the case with all first-round contracts, the deal includes a fifth-year team option for 2021. Sort of a bizarro Tavon Austin coming out of West Virginia, McCaffrey is an explosive runner who doubles as a dangerous receiver. He's an element that's been missing from the Panthers' offense for years, and one few teams have. McCaffrey is justifiable as the No. 1 overall pick in rookie Dynasty drafts.

Hue Jax expects Big Ben comparisons for Kizer

Browns coach Hue Jackson expects DeShone Kizer to draw Ben Roethlisberger comparisons.

"I don't know that I've coached a guy with this kind of skill-set," Jackson said Thursday. "But he's a big powerful man, so I know he's going to get compared to another guy on another team in our division." Jackson went on to praise Kizer's arm strength, mobility and intelligence. Kizer is a project, but the Browns' quarterback situation is such that he will almost certainly make rookie starts.

Jaye Howard signs one-year deal with Bears

Bears signed DT Jaye Howard, formerly of the Chiefs, to a one-year contract.

Howard was cut by the Chiefs 12 days ago. He signed a "two-year, $12 million deal" in March 2016, but was limited to eight games by injury last season. Howard was fairly productive in 2015. He's a bounce-back flier for the Bears' undermanned defensive line.

Report: Vikings interested in Michael Floyd

KSTP's Darren Wolfson reports the Vikings are interested in free agent Michael Floyd.

Per Wolfon, the Vikings are "highly, highly interested." He also reports the Redskins are considering the ex-Cardinal. It's the first we've heard of Floyd in months. He drew zero initial interest in free agency, and has yet to make a visit. Floyd looked lost on the field for Arizona last season, and was then popped for "extreme" DUI, leading to his release. He did zero with the Patriots after being claimed off waivers. The Vikings' receiver depth chart is shaky behind Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.
