Patrick Peterson (hamstring) was downgraded to "DNP" in Thursday's practice.

Peterson had been limited on Wednesday. A mid-week downgrade with a soft-tissue injury isn't exactly welcome news. We would consider Peterson on the wrong side of questionable for Sunday's game against the Titans, though his Friday status will tell the story. Peterson's absence would be a major upgrade for both Rishard Matthews and Corey Davis.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Rams are not expected to sign franchise-tagged S Lamarcus Joyner to a long-term deal before Monday's deadline.

Jul 16 - 8:38 AM

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports negotiations between franchise-tagged Le'Veon Bell and the Steelers "will go down to the wire."

The deadline to sign a deal is 4 ET Monday afternoon. Coach Mike Tomlin said over the weekend he is optimistic a deal will get done, but ESPN's Adam Schefter painted a less rosy picture on Sunday night, saying it will be "challenging" for the two sides to reach an agreement. Bell will likely skip training camp again this season if he does not land a long-term contract.

Darren Sproles wrote Sunday that 2018 will be his final NFL season.

Sproles, who turned 35 last month, is coming off a torn ACL. "Coming back from any injury is tough -- especially a knee injury for a running back," he wrote. "I wondered if I was going to come back the same, if I would still have my quickness. ... Once I started rehabbing and running again I could tell I was good and ready for one more healthy year." Sproles noted he is currently eighth on the NFL's all-time list for career all-purpose yards, and his goal is to catch Tim Brown at No. 5. Sproles is currently 527 total yards behind Brown.

The Steelers have "made some progress" in extension talks with Le'Veon Bell.

Bell plans to hold out of training camp if the sides can't get something done before the July 16 deadline. The Steelers haven't been willing to meet Bell's $17 million AAV asking price, but talks have at least ramped up. Bell will make $14.5 million if he plays 2018 under the franchise tag.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports "barring a significant turn of events" Cowboys LE DeMarcus Lawrence will play 2018 under the franchise tag.

Dallas has been in a contract standoff with Lawrence for months. Lawrence wants a five-year deal, but the Cowboys need to save cap space with Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott due for extensions. Lawrence will make $17.1M under the tag and is a candidate to leave in free agency next offseason. Lions DE Ziggy Ansah is also expected to play 2018 without a new deal.

DeMarco Murray announced his retirement after seven seasons.

A third-round pick of the Cowboys in 2011, Murray was one of the most productive running backs in football during his prime. The former Oklahoma Sooner earned three Pro Bowl nods over his seven seasons and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2014. He led the league with 1,845 rushing yards that year while guiding Dallas to a division title. The 30-year-old probably could have continued his career as a backup—the Dolphins, Lions, Saints and Seahawks were among teams interested in him this offseason—but ultimately chose to hang up his cleats. For his career, Murray totaled 7,174 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns (49 rushing, six receiving) over 99 games for Dallas, Philadelphia and Tennessee.

TitansOnline.com's Jim Wyatt reports Corey Davis was "one of the stars" of Titans spring practices.

The fifth overall pick in last year's draft, Davis missed a bunch of rookie time with a hamstring injury, missing most of training camp and the first five games of the season. Per Wyatt, Davis "looked smooth during the offseason, snatching the ball out of the air with ease in traffic" and made "some spectacular catches." Tennessee is counting on Davis to make a significant Year 2 leap.

Speaking Thursday, Bears RG Kyle Long said the coaching staff has "taken the training wheels off" of Mitchell Trubisky.

"My little boy is becoming a man," Long said. "Mitch -- they've taken the training wheels off of Mitch's little bike. So he's going to be able to do some things creatively and get to showcase his skills. We're excited to see him. He's a tremendous leader and somebody the guys look up to in the locker room." Ex-coach John Fox predictably shackled Trubisky as a rookie, only letting him go as far as game manager-type, but the new staff led by innovative minds, coach Matt Nagy and OC Mark Helfrich, plan to unleash their young passer. Trubisky flashed as a rookie and is a dark horse candidate to make a significant second-year leap.

The Buffalo News' Jay Skurski writes Chris Ivory "would be the first option" if LeSean McCoy is unavailable.

Serious allegations against McCoy of domestic, child, and animal abuse surfaced this week, throwing his availability into question. Signed to a two-year deal in March, Ivory is the obvious replacement for McCoy if the Bills decide to stay in-house, but they could also look to add a veteran like DeMarco Murray or Adrian Peterson. No matter who takes over, Buffalo's offense will be in serious trouble if McCoy is out.

TitansOnline's Jim Wyatt writes the Titans "plan" for Derrick Henry "to be the lead back."

Wyatt adds Henry's performance will determine how the workload is distributed, but Henry is the favorite for carries over Dion Lewis. Terry McCormick of Titan Insider agrees with Wyatt's assessment, but he added it is "not out of the question" Lewis leads the team in all-purpose yards despite Henry getting more carries. This situation looks like a true committee, and Lewis is coming off the board a full three rounds after Henry, making him the better value pick.

The Tampa Bay Times' Greg Auman reports Marcell Dareus is facing two separate lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault.

The first came to light on Wednesday, and Auman reports Dareus is facing another suit in connection with an incident which allegedly happened in January of 2017. Both suits accuse Dareus of raping an unconscious woman. Dareus is reportedly due in court on August 9 for a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
