Burkhead missed the final two games of the season but is now on track to play when the Patriots are back in action next week following their first-round bye.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports ex-Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo "has emerged as the favorite" for the Chiefs' defensive coordinator vacancy.

Spagnuolo spent this past season out of the league. Both he and coach Andy Reid worked together in Philadelphia when Reid was the head coach and Spags was an assistant under longtime DC Jim Johnson. Spagnuolo has coordinated some stellar defenses in the past with the Giants, but also ran one of the worst defenses in history with the Saints in 2012 after failing miserably as the Rams head coach from 2009-2011. Spagnuolo would be an interesting hire for the Chiefs.

Saints CB P.J. Williams was arrested for DUI on Wednesday in New Orleans.

The impending free agent was booked for drunk driving and careless driving around 1:10 in the morning overnight and bonded out a little more than three hours later. Williams was the Saints' nickel back this season, covering the slot for the team. This is Williams' second known drunk driving offense after getting one in 2015 in Tallahassee as a prospect out of Florida State.

Cardinals re-signed WR Larry Fitzgerald to a one-year contract.

Fitzgerald was considering retirement but will be back for a 16th season to play his first under new coach Kliff Kingsbury. Fitzgerald will be 36 by Week 1 but showed he still has it this past season, even if his numbers were depressed in one of the league's worst offenses. Things should be much different in the desert this year, with a focus on offense and scoring points under Kingsbury.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen does not expect Reuben Foster to be further suspended.

"I don't know why we would suspect a suspension," Allen said Tuesday. The latest domestic violence charges against Foster were dropped earlier this month. Foster spent the final month of 2018 on the commissioner's exempt list after being claimed off waivers from the 49ers. The NFL moves at a glacial pace in these cases, so it could be a few months before we get a resolution.

Tweeting on Tuesday, impending free agent Cole Beasley posted that the Cowboys' front office "pushes who they want to get the ball to" and said his role will be a bigger factor than money when deciding where to sign.

"More balls come my way in two-minute drill where nothing is planned," Beasley frustratedly said of his Cowboys usage. It certainly sounds like he will be moving on unless the Cowboys offer a lot more money than anyone else. Going on 30, Beasley's 65 catches in 2018 were the second most of his career.

Speaking Tuesday about Alex Smith's (leg) health and a potential 2019 return, Redskins GM Bruce Allen said the team was "optimistic" but finished with "we'll see."

"We're optimistic, if anyone can come back it's Alex," was Allen's full comment, followed by "we'll see." Smith was spotted with an "external fixator" on his leg Monday and did not have the looks of someone who would be picking up a football any time soon. Smith seems extremely unlikely to be ready for Week 1. The question is if he is ready at any point in 2019.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports ex-Jets and Bills coach Rex Ryan is a "name to watch" for the Chiefs' defensive coordinator vacancy.

Schefter's report is via "sources." Ryan has a habit of openly campaigning for jobs/inserting himself into the conversation, but he can't be dismissed out of hand in Kansas City. A deeply-flawed head coach, Ryan is an undeniably strong defensive mind. He got Bill Belichick's number more than once.

Chiefs fired defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.

Sutton had been Andy Reid's defensive coordinator for Reid's entire six-year tenure in Kansas City, but his defense increasingly became a laughingstock as Reid continued to power up on offense. Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, his firing comes after Reid and company "talked with players and coaches." The takeaway was apparently that Sutton's "lack of adjustments" were a "non-stop frustration." The Chiefs have seen some talent go out of the door on Sutton's side of the ball, but he still had enough to work with to be better. With the Chiefs in the midst of a Super Bowl window, replacing Sutton will be an attractive job offer.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden is unsure if impending free agent Marshawn Lynch intends to play in 2019.

Lynch was limited to six games by a groin/core muscle injury in 2018. He was running reasonably well for a terrible offense before going down. Lynch has averaged 4.26 yards per carry since returning in 2017 and arguably been more impressive from an "eye test" perspective. He turns 33 in April.

Bengals hired Raiders QBs coach Brian Callahan as offensive coordinator.

Bill Callahan's son, Brian has been an NFL quarterbacks coach since 2015, spending 2015 in Denver before a two-year sojourn in Detroit. He joined Jon Gruden last offseason. A card-carrying cocoon member, it is entirely unclear if Callahan is qualified to run an NFL offense. It's possible new coach Zac Taylor serves as his own play-caller, anyways.

Impending free agent OLB Dee Ford "would love" to be back with the Chiefs.

Despite his offsides penalty costing the Chiefs a late interception and likely Super Bowl berth, Ford had an outstanding 2018, recording 13 sacks and making his first Pro Bowl. That kind of production will earn him a fat contract if he reaches the open market, but it is unlikely the Chiefs let him get there, retaining him either with a long-term deal or the franchise tag. The latter would earn Ford around $15.6 million for 2019.
