Giants hired Mike Shula as offensive coordinator.

This comes as a bit of a surprise since Shula's name had not shown up in reports, but he did work as the offensive coordinator for GM Dave Gettleman in Carolina. It is not an exciting hire, but the reality is Shula will be more of a glorified assistant under offensive-minded head coach Pat Shurmur, highlighted by the fact he will also be tasked with coaching the quarterbacks in New York.

Cowboys RG Zack Martin (knee) will have an MRI on Sunday.

Martin limped off after a helmet-to-knee hit in the first half. It's not a good sign he needs an MRI, but Martin was reportedly walking fine on the sidelines. With Travis Frederick sidelined, losing Martin would be another blow to the Cowboys' offensive line.

Bears TE Adam Shaheen was carted off the field with a right ankle injury in Saturday night's preseason game.

Shaheen made a short catch, then drew a helmet to the leg. He came off hobbling and was eventually carted to the locker room. Shaheen has been having a solid camp and preseason after turning in an underrated rookie campaign.

Free agent RB Orleans Darkwa will work out for the Redskins on Sunday.

The Redskins are desperate for running backs with Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall going down last week. Coming off a career 2017, there hasn't been much interest in Darkwa due to May leg surgery but he's fully healthy. He would give Washington a veteran to push Rob Kelley.

Bucs RB Charles Sims exited Saturday's preseason game with a left knee injury and will not return.

He was immediately ruled out, which isn't a good sign. Sims got injured on the game's opening kickoff. Sims is the Bucs' third-down back. If he misses extended time, Peyton Barber could take on a bigger role in the passing game.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy reports Josh Gordon hasn't been cleared to practice.

Gordon is still in Stage 3 of the league's substance abuse program and needs to pass certain conditions before practicing. It's possible not meeting the conditions are why Gordon delayed reporting to training camp. The league "doesn't have a timetable" on Gordon's next step. Gordon can attend meetings and do off-field work, but he's not out of the woods yet.

Josh Gordon has reported to the Browns' training camp.

Gordon is expected to attend practice Sunday after skipping the first three weeks of camp for health reasons. The Browns have supported Gordon throughout the process and are welcoming him back. It's a strange situation that Gordon didn't get help before the preseason, but there's been nothing to suggest he's in trouble with the league. Gordon will be moved slowly but has enough time to be on the field for Week 1. Gordon's return should end Cleveland's pursuit of Dez Bryant.

Carson Wentz (knee) has been cleared for 11-on-11 team drills.

Coach Doug Pederson said Wentz would need at least a week of team drills to be ready for the start of the season. It's an encouraging step for Wentz, though he did some limited team work early in training camp. With Nick Foles sidelined the rest of the preseason, the Eagles are ramping up Wentz's activity. Wentz looks on track for Week 1.

Dalvin Cook (knee) won't play in the Vikings' second preseason game.

Cook was also held out of the preseason opener. The Vikings are avoiding setback risks with Cook 10 months removed from ACL surgery. Cook went through pre-game warmups and has reportedly "looked great" in practice. He should be cleared for the Vikings' dress rehearsal next week.

Cardinals coach Steve Wilks said Christian Kirk has "created some separation" for the No. 2 receiver job.

Chad Williams also drew praise after struggling with training camp drops. Brice Butler's injury was an opportunity for Kirk to do some depth-chart climbing, and he responded by leading the Cardinals in receiving against the Saints. Kirk played with the first-team offense, but scored his touchdown on a highlight from Josh Rosen. The Cardinals are making Kirk compete with middling wideouts behind Larry Fitzgerald, but his starting chances are trending up going into the third preseason game.

ESPN's Mike Rodak believes it's too early to consider Josh Allen a "lock" to start Week 1.

Allen crushed his first two preseason appearances, completing 18-of-32 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. He hasn't had many first-team training camp reps but is in the driver seat to start with A.J. McCarron (collarbone) out. Allen still needs to hold off Nathan Peterman — a favorite of coach Sean McDermott. Allen looks likely to start next week's dress rehearsal but both quarterbacks should see time with the top offense.
Aug 18 - 10:17 AM

Christian Kirk caught 4-of-6 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals' second preseason game.

Kirk scored on an end-zone catch-in-traffic from Josh Rosen on the Cardinals' third series. He showed good rapport with Rosen, also adding a 21-yard catch later in the game. It's a needed breakout after Kirk's quiet preseason debut. With Brice Butler sidelined, Kirk is trending toward opening the year in three-wide sets.
