Seahawks signed No. 27 overall pick Rashaad Penny to a four-year contract.

The deal includes a team option for 2022. A post-Combine riser, the Seahawks traded down in the first round to land Penny. The coaching staff has raved about Penny's feature back traits this offseason, and he's expected to open the year in an every-down role. Playing in a run heavy offense, Penny has a chance to push for 250-plus carries as a rookie.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden is aiming for Adrian Peterson to play in Friday's preseason game against the Broncos.

Peterson impressed Tuesday at his first Redskins practice, drawing praise from Gruden, who said the 33-year-old looked to be in "fantastic physical shape." Obviously Peterson is still learning Gruden's offensive scheme but if the veteran can "get up to speed," he could see a handful of reps in Friday night's dress rehearsal. At worst, the 33-year-old will share a committee role with Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine (when healthy).

Chargers CB Casey Hayward suffered an apparent hamstring injury at Tuesday's practice.

Hayward pulled up while shadowing Mike Williams on a go route at the end of practice. The 28-year-old was arguably the league's top corner in 2017, earning All-Pro status for the second time in as many seasons. Losing Hayward for any amount of time would be a catastrophic blow to a Chargers secondary already playing without Jason Verrett (Achilles) and Jaylen Watkins (ACL). Coach Anthony Lynn insisted that Hayward will be "okay," though obviously this will be a storyline to watch as training camp unfolds.

According to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe, DeVante Parker's status for Week 1 against the Titans is "up in the air."

Parker has been active in conditioning drills but still can't catch passes. Kenny Stills, Danny Amendola and even Albert Wilson would stand to benefit if Parker's absence stretches into the regular season. Once considered a breakout candidate, the 25-year-old's fantasy stock is at an all-time low.

Browns coach Hue Jackson said Josh Gordon will resume practicing "very soon."

Gordon has been working off to the side since his arrival at Browns training camp last weekend, but could be cleared to practice as soon as Saturday. Obviously he won't partake in Thursday night's preseason game against the Eagles. Jackson reiterated Tuesday that the plan is to have Gordon "up and running" for Week 1 against Pittsburgh. "He's definitely excited' to be back," said teammate Tyrod Taylor. "He's ready to get back on the field and we're ready to see him back out there."

Jamaal Williams (ankle) returned to practice on Tuesday.

Williams took some handoffs from a trainer at Monday's session but was back in full pads on Tuesday. The second-year back sprained his ankle in last week's preseason game against Pittsburgh, but obviously the injury wasn't serious. With Aaron Jones suspended for the first two games, Williams will open 2018 as the Packers' lead ball-carrier. He's in the RB3 discussion.

SportsDay DFW's David Moore reports Cowboys C Travis Frederick is seeking additional opinions on his stingers and surgery "has not been ruled out."

The Cowboys initially thought rest would allow Frederick's nerve irritation to subside, but Moore writes Dallas' Pro Bowl center visited orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Dossett, a spine consultant for the Cowboys, prior to the club's game versus the Bengals Saturday. Moore also notes that Dallas "continues to gather information" and awaits results from Frederick's recent testing "before a final determination on the best course of action is made," whether that be rest or, potentially, surgery. Jerry Jones danced around specifics in his weekly interview with 105.3 The Fan Tuesday morning, but eventually stated both Frederick and Zack Martin (knee) would play in Week 1.
Aug 21 - 1:11 PM

Coach Doug Pederson said Nick Foles (shoulder) will play "about a half" during Thursday's preseason game versus the Browns.

Foles exited last week's game early with a strained shoulder but will suit up with the starters Thursday for an entire half. LT Jason Peters and RB Darren Sproles have officially been ruled out. With Jay Ajayi nursing a lower body injury, Wendell Smallwood and Matt Jones are expected to be the only active running backs against the Browns. Either way, this is terrific news for Foles as he appears ready to go for Week 1 if Carson Wentz (knee) is held out.

Saints released RB Terrance West.

West signed with the Saints in June but fell behind others in the backfield during camp competition. He totaled seven carries for 36 yards (5.1 YPC) during his preseason stint. His release propels Jonathan Williams into likely goal line work during Mark Ingram's four-game suspension. Trey Edmunds could also compete for carries behind Alvin Kamara, with Boston Scott and Shane Vereen filling in on passing downs.

Victor Cruz announced his retirement through a video for Uninterrupted Tuesday.

"As I officially close one chapter of my life and begin another, I could not be more thrilled to join another championship team at ESPN," Cruz said. "I'm excited to get started and share my insight and analysis with the viewers and fans of the NFL." Cruz joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2010, producing two consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2011 - 2012. He also hauled in four catches for 25 yards and one score in the team's Super Bowl XLVI victory over the Patriots. New York and Chicago released him after injuries derailed the final years of his career, but he still showed interest in playing as early as May. Instead, he'll be doing the salsa in an announcer's booth.

The Jets reportedly contacted the Jaguars to gauge interest on a trade for DE Dante Fowler.

It's undisclosed whether the Jaguars showed interest in trading Fowler despite declining his 2019 team option in the offseason. Including the playoffs, he's racked up 14 sacks over the last two seasons. That type of pass-rushing pedigree is something the Jets have lacked recently, even leading coach Todd Bowles to say the team "doesn't have the name guy" just last week. Fowler remains suspended for the first game of this season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Panthers LT Matt Kalil (knee) is considered "week-to-week" after having his knee scoped Tuesday.

The team's trainer released a statement mentioning that Kalil had "received a second opinion" from Dr. James Andrews and "the decision was made to perform an arthroscopic procedure" on his knee. Kalil notably had both knees scoped in 2015, too. It's horrendous news for the Panthers after the club had already lost RT Daryl Williams to a dislocated kneecap and torn MCL, as well as premier G Andrew Norwell in free agency. Taylor Moton is now expected to start at left tackle in Week 1 for a Carolina offensive line that remains in shambles.
