Speaking Thursday, Browns GM John Dorsey said there was "no timetable" for Josh Gordon's return to the team.

The Browns have tried to project positivity on Gordon's potential return, but they don't seem to know anything more than the rest of us. Their continued interest in free agent Dez Bryant might speak louder than words. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported four days ago that Gordon was "getting closer to returning." We are 31 days away from the Browns' opener.

The Athletic's Matthew Fairburn expects Josh Allen to work with the second-team offense during the second preseason game.

Allen worked with the second-team "exclusively" during the last week of practice, the first time that has happened. The Twitter mob latched hold of a disastrous play, but Allen actually had a pretty good debut last week. If he can replicate that on Friday against the Browns, he could push for the Week 1 start.

Ben Roethlisberger has cleared the concussion protocol.

Roethlisberger was thought to have suffered a concussion when he took a hit during Tuesday's practice. Clearing the protocol this quickly suggests he was not actually concussed, however. Roethlisberger will not play Thursday night, but he will be fine for the third preseason game.

Odell Beckham believes his contract situation will "work itself out."

"When is it going to happen? You don't know," Beckham continued. "It's a matter of time, just like everything in life." It is likely Beckham continues to sit out preseason games while the contract situation is resolved, but he was a full-go during joint practices with the Lions this week. Healthy and hopefully in a better offense, Beckham has an argument to be the second receiver off the board in fantasy drafts.

Browns OC Todd Haley said Baker Mayfield has "made consistent progress."

"I thought it wasn’t too big for him," Haley said of the preseason opener. "He was by no means perfect, but he kept his cool. He was never flustered. I think it’s clear to everybody he can really throw the football." Despite the strong showing in the first preseason game, the Browns have vowed to stick to the plan at quarterback, and Haley tempered his praise by saying Mayfield has to "keep working" and "keep learning from the older guys in the room." Tyrod Taylor is going to start Week 1, but Mayfield should see the field at some point as a rookie.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta believes "it’d be an upset" if Sam Darnold does not start Week 1.

"Barring deer-in-the-headlights moments over the next couple weeks," Mehta writes. "The brain trust is happier with this kid with each passing day." Coming off an outstanding debut, Darnold received the bulk of the first-team reps this week and is expected to start the second preseason game on Thursday night. Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater are solid options, but the Jets have to start Darnold if he proves ready.

Saquon Barkley (hamstring) did not practice Thursday.

As has been the case since he tweaked his hamstring on Monday, Barkley looked fine during warmups, but he was held out of most the action. The Giants are seemingly just being cautious with their No. 2 pick, and Barkley said he would be able to play if there was a real game this weekend. It would be a surprise if he played on Friday night, but he should be 100 percent well before Week 1.

A.J. Green said he is "not going anywhere any time soon."

Green turned 30 in July and is now six years older than any other receiver on the team, but he is not feeling his age. "I ain’t an old man," Green said. "I've always got juice. I've had it for a long time." Green had one his least efficient seasons last year, and he still managed a 75/1,078/8 line. In what should be an improved offense, he has a shot to better those numbers this season. He is a great pick at the end of the second round.

Dak Prescott said Tavon Austin is "not just a gadget" player.

"I didn’t know he was as good of a receiver as he was and could run routes as well as he does, and catch the ball every single time," Prescott said. "He’s a guy you can put out there, inside, outside and trust he’s going to get open." The Cowboys have steadily said they plan to use Austin as a receiver, and that is primarily how he was deployed in the preseason opener. He did play behind Allen Hurns, Michael Gallup, and Terrance Williams in that contest, however, and he will likely be behind Cole Beasley once the slot receiver returns from injury. Still, he does carry some deep sleeper appeal on a wide-open depth chart.

Dak Prescott said he and his pass-catching group are "starting to click."

"We’re starting to get it," Prescott said. "We knew that would be part of it, working out the kinks and we’re all getting comfortable with each other. It’s fun to do it." Fantasy players have fretted about Prescott's supporting cast, but it is not that much worse -- if it is at all -- than the group which allowed him to throw for 1,818 yards, 16 TDs, and four INTs over the first eight games last season. With his finish to the season, which mostly occurred without Ezekiel Elliott and/or Tyron Smith, being over-emphasized, Prescott is a great value in a deep quarterback group.

Appearing on NFL Network, Ian Rapoport referred to Chris Carson as the Seahawks' "bellcow" back.

"He's probably going to be their starter," RapSheet reiterated. Rapoport also stated there is some concern Rashaad Penny's hand surgery could cost him 1-2 regular season games. It will certainly limit Penny's ability to practice and improve in pass protection, where he struggled at San Diego State and in Seattle's preseason opener. Carson is shaping up as a viable mid-round RB3/flex.

Raiders WR Ryan Switzer has worked behind journeyman Griff Whalen at recent training camp practices.

Switzer also ran behind Whalen in Oakland's preseason opener, although Switzer caught a touchdown pass and played well in the game. Switzer and Whalen are competing to upgrade on Seth Roberts, who is on the chopping block and has missed recent time with an undisclosed injury. Oakland's slot battle is unlikely to produce fantasy value, but that could change if Jordy Nelson goes down.
