The Hurricanes waived Brett Bellemore on Friday.

The 24-year-old had 10 points and 74 penalty minutes in 71 games in the AHL last season. He recently signed a two-year, two-way deal with the Hurricanes.

Danny DeKeyser has signed a six-year, $30 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

He averaged 21:48 minutes of ice time per game last season, while contributing eight goals and 20 points in 78 matches. DeKeyser has become a top-four defender for the Red Wings, but he still has work to do before he becomes a viable player in fantasy leagues.

Brayden Schenn has agreed to a four-year contract with Philadelphia.

The new deal carries an annual average of $5.125 million. The two sides narrowly avoided salary arbitration. Schenn just had the most productive season of his NHL career in 2015-16. He compiled 26 goals and 59 points in 80 games.

Kris Versteeg's move to Europe for next season appears to be final.

SC Bern of the National League A has announced that he will join the team on a one-year contract. It's surprising that Versteeg won't be playing in North America in 2016-17. In 550 career NHL contests, the 30-year-old forward has generated 131 goals and 313 points.

Luke Schenn has inked a two-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes.

Schenn deserves credit for being a big contributor when it comes to hits and blocked shots as he finished 2015-16 with 234 and 106 respectively. However, he doesn't look as good in terms of Corsi/Fenwick. He hasn't always been a negative Corsi/Fenwick player relative to his teammates, but that has been the case with him more often than not. He has a career minus-3.8 relative Corsi and minus-4.0 relative Fenwick over the course of his career, which suggests that his teams did a worse job of possessing the puck whenever he was on the ice compared to when he wasn't playing. All that said, this move gives Arizona some extra defensive depth and could bolster their third pairing. It's worth adding that Coyotes GM John Chayka feels Schenn "can optimize his performance here."

Claude Giroux (hip/abdomen) has already resumed skating.

Giroux was originally projected to take 10-12 weeks before he'd be back on the ice, but he got to this point in nine weeks. He should be available for the World Cup, where he'll represent Canada.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Auston Matthews to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The financial terms of the agreement weren't immediately known. Typically the financial terms of an entry-level contract aren't that interesting anyways, but this is an exception as there was talk that GM Lou Lamoriello might attempt to deny Matthews performance bonuses. We would be surprised if Matthews agreed to a contract with no or minimal performance bonuses, but eventually we know either way. Regardless of the terms of the deal, Toronto and Matthews have taken the first step towards what could be a superb NHL career. Temper your expectations for Matthews as a rookie, especially seeing as the Leafs might limit his playing time initially, but there's no question that he has tremendous upside.

Mikhail Grigorenko has inked a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Colorado Avalanche.

As a result, Grigorenko's scheduled arbitration hearing for Friday is no longer necessary. He had requested a salary of $1.65 million and the Avalanche countered at $950,000, so they basically settled on the middle ground. Grigorenko has plenty of potential but he also has a lot to prove. He had an underwhelming six goals and 27 points in 74 contests last season.

Brad Richards has announced his retirement.

Richards is hanging up his skates after scoring 298 goals and 932 points in 1,126 contests with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings. He's a two-time Stanley Cup winner and claimed the 2004 Conn Smythe Trophy after recording 12 goals and 26 points in 23 contests during that playoff run. "Winning the Stanley Cups in Tampa Bay and Chicago was the best part of my career and I will never forget those moments. Nothing compares to enjoying that night with your team and knowing what you have accomplished together," Richards said.

Marcus Johansson has inked a three-year, $13.75 million contract with the Washington Capitals.

With that, Johansson and Washington narrowly avoided the arbitration hearing scheduled for Wednesday. His $4.58 million annual cap hit roughly represents the middle ground between the $5.25 million he requested and the $3.85 million the Capitals countered with. It's also a sizable increase from his previous $3.75 million salary. He had 17 goals and 46 points in 74 games in 2015-16.

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Derick Brassard and a 2018 seventh round pick from the New York Rangers in exchange for Mika Zibanejad and a 2018 second round selection.

The Senators are giving up a 23-year-old coming off 20-goal and 21-goal seasons, but in exchange they're getting a veteran forward who scored 27 goals and 58 points in 80 contests last season. Brassard still has three seasons left on a reasonable five-year, $25 million deal, making him a particularly good fit for a Senators team that typically doesn't spend to the cap. Brassard should play a big role with Ottawa, which will help him continue the success he's enjoyed with the Rangers in recent years.
Jul 18 - 2:08 PM

Alex Killorn has agreed to a seven-year, $31.15 million contract.

In other words, Killorn will come with a $4.45 million annual cap hit. The 26-year-old (27 in September) forward has recorded 41, 38, and 40 points in each of the last three seasons. Given his age, he's not really a prospect anymore and we have doubts that he'll ever achieve much higher heights offensively. He was coming off of a two-year, $5.1 million contract and had an arbitration hearing scheduled for July 20 that's now unnecessary.
