Jeremy Welsh has been assigned to the AHL's Charlotte Checkers by the Hurricanes.

The 24-year-old forward made his NHL debut in the regular season finale last season. He had 27 goals and 44 points with Union College before that.

Elias Lindholm has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $5.4 million.

He will make $2.5 million in 2016-17 and then $2.9 million during the 2017-18 campaign. Lindholm, who was the fifth overall pick in 2013, showed plenty of promise last season while recording 17 goals and 39 points in 81 games. "We expect he will be a very important part of the Hurricanes as he continues to develop as a professional," GM Ron Francis said after the signing.

Patrik Berglund sustained a shoulder injury while training for the upcoming season and he'll be re-evaluated in four months.

He will undergo surgery on his right shoulder on Friday. Berglund had 12 goals and 27 points in 77 games last season.

Mike Richards has been charged for possession of a controlled substance while entering Canada, according to RCMP Manitoba's Twitter account.

He will appear in court on September 10th. Richards had his contract terminated by Los Angeles because of "a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player's Contract" before the start of free agency. The NHLPA has filed a grievance on Richards' behalf, but a hearing date hasn't been set yet.

Nicklas Backstrom (hip) isn't sure if he'll be ready for the start of the regular season.

"It is very difficult to answer," he told Swedish newspaper Arbetarbladet on Tuesday. "We will see here now (after evaluating) with the coach and fitness coach. There has been considerable focus on enhancing mobility in the hip again. From the beginning I could not run or anything." The good news is Backstrom has been skating and working out with trainer Andreas Ohgren. He is slated to take part in training camp, but it could be in a limited capacity. However, we won't know that until he gets back to North America and he's examined by the Capitals. If he does miss the start of the regular season then it doesn't appear as though he will be sidelined for very long.

Phil Kessel is likely to start training camp on the same line as Sidney Crosby, according to coach Mike Johnston.

"We're looking at Crosby with Kessel and Malkin with Hornqvist," Johnston said. "On the left side, there are a number of players. Even right wingers like David Perron or Beau Bennett might be there. We want to see how a guy like Pascal (Dupuis) looks." The lines will probably be tinkered with during the Penguins' eight-game exhibition schedule, but it looks like Crosby will have a star winger by his side this season. Kessel is a five-time 30-goal scorer who has hit 80 points in two of his last four seasons.

Calgary has locked up defenseman Mark Giordano to a six-year contract worth an annual average value of $6.75 million.

This extension will kick in after the 2015-16 campaign. Giordano produced 11 goals and 48 points in 61 contests last season. He was a top contender for the Norris Trophy until he suffered a biceps injury that kept him sidelined for the last 21 games of the regular season and the playoffs. Injuries have been a concern for Giordano, but he's a big-minute producer from the back end who is worth the risk based on the high level he has achieved over the past two seasons.

Detroit Red Wings trainer Piet Van Zant is encouraged by Pavel Datsyuk's recovery from ankle surgery.

"Piet watched him work out, told me he's in good spirits," GM Ken Holland said. "He's had no setbacks. He's doing lots of training. He's excited. He wants to feel 100 percent. He's happy about the surgery, what he's able to do at this point." Datsyuk is scheduled to be re-evaluated in mid-September by the doctor who performed his procedure. Holland thinks that Datsyuk's recovery is on schedule, which was set at a "minimum of three months." He could be available at the earliest in late October, but it wouldn't be surprising if he was held out a little longer due to his injury woes over the past couple of seasons.

The Los Angeles Kings have reportedly signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a one-year, $1.5 million deal.

Injuries limited the German defenseman to just 49 games played in 2014-15, his only season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. That hurt his value, but he could be an interesting deeper option on the Kings.

Pittsburgh Penguins winger Phil Kessel took to Twitter on Sunday to thank Toronto Maple Leafs fans.

Kessel wrote: "I want to thank all of the Toronto fans for all the support you have shown me. I will miss you and this city and always consider Toronto home." He may not miss the Toronto media, but there's little doubt that he generated a lot of memories during his time with the enormous hockey market.

Agitating forward Daniel Carcillo admits that he isn't sure if he'll play in the NHL again as a 30-year-old UFA.

"If I told you that I've already made a decision 100 percent to not play I'd be lying," Carcillo said to the Chicago Tribune. "But every year, especially the last couple, I've definitely thought about it. And then when you have a son it kind of changes things because being away that long with that travel schedule is just not conducive to being the father I want to be. I want to be here and I want to see things."

It sounds like the addition of Mike Babcock made the Toronto Maple Leafs a more desirable team for Shawn Matthias.

"This is where I wanted to go, and he's a big part of that," Matthias told NHL.com "We had a good meeting. I got home and talked to my dad, and everything (with the Maple Leafs) seemed to be going in the right direction. I don't see why anyone would not want to play here. It's going to be amazing."
