Reacting to Friday's news that the scheduled Winter Classic between Detroit and the Toronto Maple Leafs was being cancelled by the NHL, Red Wings defenseman Ian White was both surprised and embarrassed.

"It's starting to feel like it's 2004," White said. "And that's a bad feeling." The NHL season was lost in 2004-2005, of course, because of a work stoppage. "It's surprising people actually have the courage to cancel something like (the Winter Classic) when so much relies upon it and so many people are looking forward to it," White said. "We've already had some damage that won't be able to be undone to our sport. (The league) just continues to pile on. It actually embarrasses me as a player. You go out in public, people view us differently from this. The NHL just continues along this path."

Detroit Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek made 28 saves en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Lightning in playoff action in Tampa Bay Saturday.

It was Mrazek's second shutout of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He held the Lightning goalless on three power plays, too. The win gave Detroit a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-seven series. The Wings will have a chance to advance to the second round of the post-season with a win in Game 6 of the series Monday night. Mrazek has been the Wings' best player in this opening-round series. He is 3-2 against the Lightning in the post-season, with a goals-against average of 1.91. His save percentage is .937. The Lightning was favored to win the series but, if the Wings take it, it'll be largely because of Mrazek's magnificence.

The Tampa Bay Lightning decided to make Jonathan Drouin a healthy scratch in Game 5 against the Detroit Red Wings.

Drouin wasn't particularly sharp in his playoff debut in Game 4, generating a -2 rating and receiving just 8:42 TOI. Perhaps he'll be sharper if he gets another chance during this postseason, though?

John Tavares was clearly pumped up as the New York Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 3-1 to force a Game 7 in a testy first-round series.

Tavares scored a goal and an assist, with his helper on the game-winner by Nikolay Kulemin being most noteworthy, as he drew a ton of attention thanks to Alex Ovechkin's highly questionable hit. Tavares now has six points in as many playoff contests.

The New York Islanders forced a Game 7 against the Washington Capitals with a 3-1 win on Saturday in large part due to Jaroslav Halak's efforts.

Halak stopped 38 out of 39 shots as he beguiles the Capitals in elimination situations all these years later. He's faced 30+ shots in four of the last five games, and while he hasn't won every time, Halak is giving the Islanders the kind of goaltending they've been lacking for many years.

Brock Nelson isn't just returning to the New York Islanders lineup, he's skating with Ryan Strome and John Tavares on the first line against the Washington Capitals in Game 6.

Nelson has had some very nice runs of offense this season, especially when handed a prime opportunity linemates-wise like this one. He's a great option in various formats, including daily fantasy sports such as FanDuel.

With their season on the line, the New York Islanders are keeping forward Anders Lee out of the lineup against the Washington Capitals in Game 6.

This is definitely a bit of a surprise, as Lee has had a nice season with New York, not looking out of place while getting some turns with John Tavares' various lines. Adjust your lineups accordingly.

Pittsburgh Penguins CEO David Morehouse said that they aren't firing GM Jim Rutherford and head coach Mike Johnston.

There's been some speculation that the team might part ways with the front office members after their first season with the franchise, but it appears that is not the case. This might not quell rumors that the organization is dysfunctional, though.

Do not expect to see Calvin De Haan (shoulder) in the Islanders lineup Saturday.

De Haan suffered the injury in Game 5 when he banged shoulders with Troy Brouwer. De Haan had a couple of shoulder surgeries in the past few years and was unable to practice on Friday. Stay tuned.

Carl Hagelin scored the series clinching goal in Friday's 2-1 overtime win over Pittsburgh.

Derek Stepan opened the scoring at the 4:23 mark of the first period, but the Rangers were unable to beat Marc-Andre Fleury again until overtime. Fleury was excellent for Pittsburgh, and he's the only reason the game even went to overtime but he may want the Hagelin goal back. The 26-year-old now has two goals and one assist in five playoff games in 2015. The Rangers will take on the winner of the Capitals-Islanders series which Washington currently leads three games to two.
Apr 24 - 10:24 PM

Craig Anderson stopped 45 of 46 shots in Friday's 5-1 win over Montreal.

Anderson has been extremely good since entering the series in game three. The 33-year-old may have seen a lot of rubber tonight, but the Canadiens didn't generate many quality scoring chances. Still, Anderson has made the saves to keep his team in each game and in the series. Many had written off the Senators after they were down three games to none, but there aren't many doubters left. Anderson appears to be in Montreal's head, as he has allowed just one goal in the last two games of the series. Ottawa will need their goaltender to keep playing this way if they want to win their next two games. Anderson has stopped 120 of 123 shots in this series.

Carey Price is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy.

Price is the heavy favorite to win the award after leading the league with 44 wins, a 1.96 GAA, and .933 save percentage in 66 contests. The bigger question is whether or not he'll take the Hart Trophy as well. His fellow nominees, Devan Dubnyk, and Pekka Rinne, certainly had great seasons in their own right, but Dubnyk didn't really take off until he was acquired by Minnesota on January 14th while Rinne slowed down considerably in the second half of the campaign. By contrast, Price was dominant throughout 2014-15.
