The NHL and NHLPA will not meet over the weekend.

That doesn't necessarily mean, however, that they won't communicate at all. After Thursday's dramatic collapse in the CBA negotiations, it's not surprising that the two sides are cooling off for a few days. There's still some time left to save the season if the they can find common ground on the remaining issues, such as contract lengths.

Aaron Ekblad spoke on Saturday about his recovery from the concussion he sustained earlier this summer, and all signs point to the first overall pick being ready for the start of Panthers' training camp next month.

"The concussion is perfectly, completely gone. I feel great," said Ekblad. "I’ve been skating all this week, working out all this week. It’s gone. I feel great." These quotes from the Globe and Mail contradict a tweet from earlier in the day by the Toronto Sun, where Ekblad is quoted as saying his symptoms are "almost completely gone," and his workouts have been "ok." Whether or not Ekblad is completely symptom-free is unclear, but both sources seem to suggest that Florida's prized defenseman should overcome the setback on time for training camp on Sept. 18.

Marc Staal's agent, Paul Krepelka, told ESPN.com via email that it's "all quiet on that front right now," while referring to contract talks with the Rangers.

Staal bounced back in 2013-14 from some serious injuries in his previous two seasons, which included an eye ailment and concussion issues. Former New York blueliner and Hall of Famer Brian Leetch wants to see the Blueshirts lock up Staal to a contract extension. "My fingers are always crossed that Marc can stay healthy because he's on the verge of getting to that next level," Leetch said. "Obviously, that's my hope for him, and I think he's an elite player with the ability to be a top D in the league if he can continue to play and get those reps."

Jean-Sebastien Giguere officially retired on Thursday after 16 NHL seasons.

He posted 262 wins, a 2.53 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in 597 career regular season appearances. Giguere was excellent in the playoffs, where he earned a mark of 33-17 to go with a .925 save percentage and a 2.08 GAA. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy with the Ducks in 2003 despite losing in the Stanley Cup Final to New Jersey and then he captured the Stanley Cup in 2007. Giguere was originally drafted 13th overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1995 draft.

Josh Harding has been skating with Wild players and Minnesota-based NHLers prior to the start of training camp.

Michael Russo of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune was encouraged by what he saw. Harding hasn't played an NHL game since Dec. 31, but he was practicing every day during Minnesota's playoff series against Chicago. He said he feels great, but he's still a pretty high injury risk because of his battle with multiple sclerosis.

Carey Price (knee) was back on the ice a couple of weeks ago in Kelowna.

He stayed in Montreal until late June to work on his rehabilitation from a sprained knee. Price has been skating with former teammate Josh Gorges, Travis Moen and other NHLers. "It's probably been one of the fastest summers I can remember," Price said. "(Skating) is going pretty good so far. So far, so good." He was injured in the Eastern Conference Final when Rangers winger Chris Kreider crashed into him during Game 1. It sounds like he'll be ready to go by the time training camp opens.

Raffi Torres is projected to miss the first few months of the 2014-15 season after he suffered a setback in his surgically repaired right knee.

He developed an infection after he underwent a cleanup procedure once the Sharks were knocked out of the playoffs. Torres missed most of the previous season while recovering from a torn ACL and it looks like he'll miss most of the coming campaign as well.

Joe Thornton is no longer the captain of the San Jose Sharks, but coach Todd McLellan isn't calling the decision a "stripping."

The Sharks won't have a captain or assistants going into training camp and the players will compete for the leadership roles. McLellan said that Thornton is a candidate just like everyone else. Regardless of their reasoning, this seems like a very odd move.

Kevin Hayes has agreed to terms with the New York Rangers.

He became a free agent this past weekend when the Chicago Blackhawks were unable to sign him. Hayes was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He broke out last season with Boston College, scoring 27 goals and 65 points in 40 games, while playing alongside NCAA point leader Johnny Gaudreau.

Hurricanes GM Ron Francis expects Alexander Semin (wrist) to be ready for training camp based on the information he's been given.

"My understanding was that he was coming back to train," Francis said. "He's training, according to his agent, a couple times a day and doing therapy on the wrist as well. There were no issues with the wrist, as far as I was told." A report surfaced about a week-and-a-half ago that Semin hadn't fully recovered yet from off-season wrist surgery, but Francis' optimism is a much better sign.

Clarke MacArthur has inked a five-year extension with the Ottawa Senators worth $23.25 million.

He scored 24 goals and 55 points in 79 games last season. MacArthur will earn $3.25 million during the last year of his deal and then his new contract will kick in for the 2015-16 campaign.

Dallas GM Jim Nill likes the team's chances of re-signing Jason Spezza.

"I think it's going to happen. I've talked to his agent," said Nill. "We want Jason and his family to move in here. I think once we get him in here, get training camp rolling, I'll sit down with his agent some more. When we made the trade the vision was he's going to be a Star for a long time. It wasn't just a six-month stop." Spezza is eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2014-15 season. He'll earn $4 million this year on a deal that carries an annual average value of $7 million.
