Deryk Engelland has returned to Pittsburgh from Norway for Christmas.

He was playing for Rosenborg of Norway's first division. The Pens' tough guy may return to Norway after the holidays if a new CBA has not been finalized.

Jonathan Drouin (thumb) was on the ice Tuesday at practice in a no-contact jersey.

He's hopeful that he'll be ready to play when the Lightning open the regular season on Oct. 9 versus Florida. "I'm feeling better," Drouin said. "There's still a little bit of pain, but we're going in the right direction. A couple weeks left and I'm sure I'll be fine by then. Progress has been really good."

Coach Ken Hitchcock said that Patrik Berglund will start the year on a line with David Backes and T.J. Oshie.

Berglund didn't have a successful transition from center to the wing last season, but the Blues feel it was because he wasn't given a chance to solidify himself anywhere. Perhaps a move alongside a pair of talented players will help in that regard.
Sep 30 - 4:52 PM

Alexander Steen (undisclosed) will get into St. Louis' lineup on Tuesday night.

He was held out of the team's previous two preseason contests after he got "banged up" in a scrimmage. Steen is excited to be seeing game action even if it is just the exhibition schedule. He's slated to play with Paul Stastny and Joakim Lindstrom.
Sep 30 - 4:35 PM

Eric Staal has recovered from his core muscle injury and is expected to suit up in Tuesday's exhibition game against St. Louis.

"It's been good," Staal said of his progress in training camp thus far. "I'm ready to get into game action to test that and see how it feels, but I foresee no issues moving forward." It will be his first preseason game.
Sep 30 - 3:54 PM

Claude Giroux (lower body) will dress in his first preseason game on Tuesday night.

"I'm fine and ready to go," said Giroux, who had been limited at camp due to a lower-body injury. "I want to make sure I'm ready to play against Boston (in the season opener Oct. 8), and for me to play this game tonight it's going to make me a better player for that game." He was between Brayden Schenn and Jakub Voracek during the morning skate. Coach Craig Berube also expects Giroux to play Thursday against Washington in another preseason outing.
Sep 30 - 2:16 PM

Kari Lehtonen suffered a mild concussion in Monday's preseason game against Florida.

He's expected to miss at least a couple of days practice as a result. Lehtonen left the game in the third period after allowing three goals on 16 shots.
Sep 30 - 1:36 PM

Tyler Seguin scored three goals and added an assist in the Dallas Stars' 5-4 victory over the visiting Florida Panthers in exhibition competition Monday night.

Two of Seguin's goals came on third-period power plays, and new Dallas center Jason Spezza assisted on both. Spezza turned in a productive night himself, with three points. He also scored his first goal of the preseason. Valeri Nichushkin chipped in with a goal and an assist while Ales Hemsky picked up two assists for the Stars. Florida goalie Roberto Luongo allowed five goals on 28 Dallas shots. Kari Lehtonen was beaten on three of the 16 Florida shots he faced while Anders Lindback, the other Dallas goalie Monday, let in a goal on eight shots.
Sep 29 - 11:33 PM

Jason Pominville scored three goals in the third period to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 4-1 preseason victory Monday night over the Pittsburgh Penguins, who played once again without superstar Sidney Crosby.

The Penguins announced Sunday that Crosby would make his preseason debut at Xcel Energy Center, but he returned to Nova Scotia for the funeral of his grandmother, who died Saturday. Pominville broke a 1-1 tie when he converted a pass from Zach Parise at 8:39 of the third period. He scored again at 12:57 and completed his hat trick by hitting the empty net with 20 seconds remaining. Parise opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period. Pittsburgh tied it on a goal by Steve Downie at 15:33 of the second. That was the only one of the Penguins' 33 shots to beat goaltender Darcy Kuemper.
Sep 29 - 11:14 PM

Cody Eakin has agreed to a two-year, $3.8 million contract with the Dallas Stars.

Eakin has missed most of the preseason, but at least he has a week and a half to get back up to speed before the Stars' season opener. He's projected to be Dallas' third-line center after Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza.
Sep 29 - 4:33 PM

Patrick Maroon is practicing alongside Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

Maroon is filling in for Dany Heatley, who is out with a groin injury. This situation is worth watching closely because there's no timetable for Heatley's return beyond the assertion that he'll miss at least a week and his presence on the top line wasn't set in stone to begin with. If Maroon gels with Getzlaf and Perry, then he might simply stick with them even once Heatley returns.
Sep 29 - 3:24 PM

Dany Heatley's previously undisclosed injury is a groin problem.

Heatley will be out for at least a week. If that's the extent of his absence, then he'll still be available for the start of the regular season.
