Brian Burke, the current Leafs GM and former director of hockey operations under NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, seems to think that his old boss is misunderstood by the fans.

"I wish Gary was perceived more fairly than he is in Canada because he's a great guy, a brilliant guy, and he's really been good for our league," Burke said. "You have to look at the metrics of this league from when Gary took over to where we are now, and he's been a marvelous commissioner." It's true that the league has grown tremendously and major new successes like the annual Winter Classic have begun during Bettman's tenure. At the same time, many fans, especially currently, are likely to judge him more on the frequent labor fights than the growth of the game. The league and player's inability to come to new CBA agreements without first dragging the NHL through the mud is an obvious sore spot and the fact that history keeps repeating itself makes it hard to believe that the new CBA - regardless of the terms of it - will actually lead to lasting labor peace.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will start Matt Murray in Game 6 on Tuesday.

Marc-Andre Fleury got his first start of the playoffs on Sunday, but he allowed four goals on 25 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss. Although Murray similarly struggled in Game 4, he's the goaltender that's gotten Pittsburgh this far in the playoffs, so it's not surprising to see the Penguins go back to him when facing elimination.

Joe Pavelski scored two goals and added an assist as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Blues 6-3 in St. Louis Monday night.

The victory gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Final. The Sharks can win the best-of-seven series and earn a berth to the Stanley Cup Final if they beat the Blues in Game 6 in San Jose Wednesday night. Pavelski, who now has 13 goals and nine assists in the playoffs, wasn't the only three-point producer for the Sharks Monday. Joe Thornton also had three points, all assists. He now has 14 assists in the postseason. Thornton and Pavelski both assisted on the game-opening goal by defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic at 3:51 of the opening period. Vlasic's goal was his first of the postseason. The Sharks tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Joel Ward (third of the playoffs) at 4:37 of the second period. Vlasic assisted on the Ward goal, which came on a power play. Pavelski tied the game again at 3-3 on another San Jose power play goal at 18:33 of the second. It was all Sharks in the third period. They got goals from Pavelski, Chris Tierney and Ward again to make it a 6-3 final.

St. Louis star David Backes, who was questionable for Game 5 of the Western Conference Final Monday night because of an upper-body ailment, is indeed in the Blues' lineup against the San Jose Sharks.

Ditto for Blues forward Robby Fabbri, who was dealing with a lower-body injury.

Steven Stamkos (blood clot) doesn't think he'll be ready for Game 6 on Tuesday night.

He said Sunday that he didn't believe there would be updates in the next few days, so he is unlikely to be available. Stamkos participated in Sunday's skate, but he didn't play in Game 5 versus Pittsburgh.

David Backes (upper body) will take part in Monday's pregame warmup.

However, Blues coach Ken Hitchcock wouldn't say if Backes will play in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final versus San Jose. "We're going to dress the same lineup for warmup that we did the last game," Hitchcock said. "We had two extra forwards in there and one extra (defenseman). No changes, all those players are there. They'll dress for warmup and then we'll run a further evaluation after warmup." Backes played for just 5:34 on Saturday due to an upper-body injury, but he is a possibility to play Monday.

Martin Jones is expected to get the nod in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final on Monday night after he was the first goalie off the ice at the morning skate.

He was pulled on Saturday after he surrendered four goals on 19 shots. Jones posted two straight shutouts against St. Louis before struggling in Game 4. He has a 2.07 goal-against average and a .921 save percentage in 16 playoff starts.

We should know more about Pavel Datsyuk's status between June 6-16, according to his agent.

Datsyuk will reportedly meet with Detroit GM Ken Holland early to mid-June. "He would like to leave, but at the same time, he wants to make sure the Wings have options," said Datsyuk's agent, Dan Milstein. "He wants to help the team any way he can with the salary cap issue." The only thing that can solve that is if he gets traded to another club willing to absorb his $7.5 million cap hit.

Nikita Kucherov chose an excellent time to break out offensively in the Eastern Conference Final.

He scored for the first time in the series in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 and found the back of the net again late in the third to even the match at 3-3. The Lightning won Game 5 by a score of 4-3 in overtime and Kucherov also had an assist on Tyler Johnson's winner for a three-point effort. He leads the postseason in goals with 11 and sits second overall in points with 19 in 15 outings.
May 23 - 8:58 AM

Tyler Johnson scored a goal and an assist in Sunday's 4-3 OT win over Pittsburgh in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Johnson picked up the primary assist on Nikita Kucherov's game-tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation before adding the game-winner in overtime. Jason Garrison took the initial shot in the extra frame that went off Johnson and in the net. The 25-year-old has seven goals and 17 points in 15 games this postseason. The series now shifts back to Tampa with the Bolts just one win away from going back to the Stanley Cup Final.
May 22 - 11:24 PM

Beau Bennett was skating on Sidney Crosby's wing during the pregame warmup.

Bennett has been out with an undisclosed injury and has yet to play in the postseason. The 24-year-old hasn't played since April 5. It looks like the Penguins will throw him right back into the fire with captain Sidney Crosby. Bennett had six goals and 12 points in 33 games in 2015-16.

Connor McDavid scored the game-winning goal in Canada's 2-0 win over Finland in the Gold Medal Game at the World Hockey Championship.

This is the first time that Canada's won back-to-back gold medals at the worlds since 2003-2004. At 19-years-old, McDavid becomes the youngest player ever to win gold at the U18 World Championship, the World Junior Championship and the World Championship. McDavid finished the tournament with just one goal, but it couldn't have been any bigger. You can watch the goal by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.
