Steve Stamkos scored his first goal of the 2013 season in Monday's 4-3 matinee loss to the New York Islanders.

He also picked up an assist on Martin St. Louis' third marker of the campaign. The Lightning fell behind 4-0 before rattling off three goals in the third period to make a game of it, but their comeback attempt came up short. Stamkos is a popular pick to challenge 50 goals in 48 games this year after he reached the 60-goal plateau in 82 games last season.

Kris Letang will have a hearing Tuesday with the NHL Department of Player Safety.

He could face supplemental discipline for an interference play on Washington's Marcus Johansson. Letang was given a two-minute penalty for a late and high hit on the play.

The Calgary Flames have fired Bob Hartley.

Hartley went from winning the Jack Adams Award in 2015 to being fired just a year later. Of course, he spent four years in Calgary and in that span the Flames had a 134-135-25 record and only made the playoffs once, so in that context his dismissal is not surprising. Hartley has 944 games as a head coach under his belt between his stints with Calgary, Colorado, and Atlanta. Along the way he led the Avalanche to a championship in 2000-01. The Flames have also parted ways with associate coach Jacques Cloutier.

Rookie goaltender Matt Murray made an eyebrow-raising 47 saves Monday night to spearhead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Washington Capitals in the third game of the teams' second-round playoff series.

The win gives the Pens a 2-1 lead in the series. Murray was outstanding. His 47 saves was his personal best in the NHL. In the playoffs, starting in place of veteran Marc-Andre Fleury (who was suffering from a concussion), Murray is 5-1. He has given up three or fewer goals in four of his six playoff starts. His goals-against average in the postseason is 1.78 and his save percentage is .944. Monday, against the offensively powerful Caps, Murray kicked out 14 shots in each of the first two periods and 19 in the third. Fleury actually was in uniform Monday for the first time since sustaining his second concussion of the season March 31 against the Nashville Predators. Murray is 8-1-0 in 10 starts since Fleury was injured. Don't expect the Pens to tamper with success. Look for Murray to be back in net for Game 4 Wednesday night, with Fleury on the bench backing up.

Marc-Andre Fleury will dress as the Penguins' backup goalie in Monday's game against Washington.

It's a significant step in Fleury's recovery from a concussion. The 31-year-old has been out of the lineup since April 2. It'll be interesting to see what the Penguins do if Matt Murray keeps winning games.
May 2 - 7:53 PM

Connor McDavid has been named a finalist for the Calder Trophy.

McDavid missed a good chunk of the year because of a clavicle injury, but he still managed to post an impressive 16 goals and 48 points in 45 games. The 19-year-old may not have put up the highest amount of points for rookies in 2015-16, but his point-per-game pace will surely put him in contention for the award.
May 2 - 7:42 PM

Tyler Seguin (Achilles) skated on Monday morning.

Coach Lindy Ruff said that Seguin is not expected to travel with the team when they leave for St. Louis, but the door is open for him to join them depending on how he feels. The Stars play in St. Louis for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Thursday night, respectively.
May 2 - 1:29 PM

Antti Raanta has inked a contract extension with the New York Rangers.

He could have become an unrestricted free agent in July, but wanted to be back with the Rangers. Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed yet.
May 2 - 12:05 PM

Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion) faced shots during the morning skate on Monday.

Coach Mike Sullivan said that Fleury is "making significant progress." He remains day-to-day with a concussion, so Matt Murray is expected to start in Game 3 versus Washington.
May 2 - 12:01 PM

Olli Maatta (upper body) won't play in Game 3 on Monday night against Washington.

Coach Mike Sullivan has confirmed that Maatta will sit after he sustained an upper-body injury on Saturday from a high hit from Brooks Orpik. It would've been surprising if he was able to play. Consider him day-to-day for now.
May 2 - 11:42 AM

Joe Pavelski scored a goal and two assists in San Jose's 3-2 win over Nashville in Game 2.

The Sharks become the only team to jump out to a 2-0 series lead in the second round. Pavelski picked up the primary assist on Logan Couture's second period goal before notching the go-ahead goal late in the third period. He also helped set up Joe Thornton's empty net goal just a few moments later. Pavelski has six goals and 10 points in seven games this postseason. The series will now move to Nashville for Games 3 and 4. Game 3 will be played on Tuesday night.
May 1 - 11:13 PM

Brooks Orpik has been suspended three games for his hit (interference) on Olli Maatta on Saturday night in Game 2.

That is statement from the NHL, but it was an ugly play. Orpik drilled Maatta with a late, high hit at 4:13 of the first period. Maatta seemed woozy, and is more than likely out for Game 3, if not the rest of the series because of a concussion (though the exact injury hasn’t been announced). With the second-round series with the Penguins 1-1, there is a chance that Orpik’s season is over.
