Vegas has traded Marc Methot to the Dallas Stars in exchange for the rights to prospect Dylan Ferguson and a second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Methot was picked up by the Golden Knights in the expansion draft, but it was expected that he would be flipped for future assets. The former Ottawa defender should help bring some stability to a young Stars defense corps.

Joe Thornton's representatives have reportedly heard from 12 teams so far as free agency approaches.

The Sharks remain his top option, but he is listening to other offers. Thornton has played for San Jose for the last 12 seasons, so this is unfamiliar territory for him.

Anton Forsberg has signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Forsberg was acquired from Columbus in the Artemi Panarin-Brandon Saad swap. He is projected to be Chicago's backup goaltender in 2017-18.

Teemu Selanne has indeed been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Selanne was expected to be a lock in his first year of eligibility and he is just the second Finnish-born player to be elected following the induction of Jari Kurri. He compiled 684 goals and 1,457 points in 1,451 career games. Dave Andreychuk, Mark Recchi, Paul Kariya and Danielle Goyette were also elected in the player category, while Jeremy Jacobs and Clare Drake will be inducted in the builder category.

Antti Niemi will be bought out by the Dallas Stars.

Dallas will place him on waivers for a buyout. Niemi has one more year left on his current contract and the Stars will be charged with a $1.5 million cap hit for the next two seasons. He struggled during his time with Dallas and was never able to seize control of the starting role from Kari Lehtonen, who wasn't very good either. It was expected that Niemi would be bought out after the Stars added Ben Bishop in the off-season.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Derek Ryan to a one-year/$1.425 million contract.

Ryan only received $600,000 from the Hurricanes last season so he got a nice raise. The Bill Masterton Memorial Finalist had 11 goals and 29 points in 67 games last season. He should be a 30-35 point center this season.

The New York Rangers will reportedly hire Lindy Ruff as an assistant coach.

The New York Post's Larry Brooks points out that the deal is not done, but it will be. Ruff spent the last four years as the head coach of the Dallas Stars and he held the same role with the Buffalo Sabres for 15 years. Ruff will be in charge of handling the Rangers' defense. Jeff Beaukeboom, who coached the defense last year, will join New York's scouting staff.

The Calgary Flames have acquired Travis Hamonic and a conditional fourth-round pick from the New York Islanders.

The Islanders have received a first-round pick in 2018, a second-round pick in 2018 and another conditional second-round pick in 2019 or 2020. It's an interesting fit for Hamonic, as the Flames already have a loaded blue line with guys like Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton and T.J. Brodie. Hamonic, 26, had three goals and 11 assists in 49 games in 2016-17. Hamonic has three years remaining on his contract at a reasonable cap hit of $3.857 million. The Flames have put together one of the best blue lines in the league.

The Colorado Avalanche selected Conor Timmins with the first pick in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

The Avalanche clearly believe their defense needed some work, as they drafted Cale Makar fourth overall before taking Timmins on Saturday. Timmins, 18, missed being part of the 2016 draft by just three days. Timmins is a slick, puck-moving defenseman that has been with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for the last two seasons. In his first campaign in the junior ranks, he picked up just 13 points in 60 contests, but last season he made an impressive leap. Timmins’ 61 points in 67 games helped vault him into a top prospect in the 2017 draft. Scouts are impressed by his strong shot and solid skating ability. The knock on him is that he tends to get himself into some trouble with turnovers at inopportune times.

Nolan Patrick was not upset about going No. 2 overall and he thought he would heading to the Flyers.

"I kind of had a feeling I was going to end up in Philly, and I'm real excited about the chance to go there," said Patrick. "It's a special day for me and my family." He feels he didn't play at all like himself in 2016-17 and is confident that a good summer will get him back to performing at 100 percent. Patrick's size and maturity could make him ready to make the jump to the NHL as early as next season.
