Rookie Mikael Granlund is struggling with the Wild.

Granlund has only two assists in his last seven games after scoring in his NHL debut. Granlund has been poor defensively and is not strong enough physically to play in the NHL at this time. He has been demoted to the fourth line and there is a possibility that he will be a healthy scratch Monday. "He's a young kid and we have to give him a fair chance, but at the same time, there has to be a little more on his side," coach Mike Yeo said. "We'll do everything we can to help him grow through the whole process of it. I'd definitely like to see him bring a real hungry attitude to the next game." It may be a good time to buy low in keeper leagues.

Jared Coreau will be in the crease for Wednesday's game against Boston.

That's no surprise after he posted his second shutout of the season on Monday against Montreal. Coreau has a 5-1-1 record with a 2.70 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage this campaign.

Logan Couture won't play Wednesday due to an illness.

"Just came down with a little bit of a bug. Played through it last game," coach Peter DeBoer said. "Just didn't feel like, one, he'd be able to play, and two, that we'd travel and expose him to the rest of the group. So he's at home, and we've called up [Ryan] Carpenter and he'll play." Consider Couture as day-to-day for the time being.

Semyon Varlamov (groin) won't play until after the All-Star break.

Coach Jared Bednar said that Varlamov's groin injury isn't a day-to-day issue, so the team decided to shut him down for a while. The Avalanche netminder has dealt with his fair share of groin injuries throughout his career, including a few trips to the sidelines this season.

John Carlson (lower body) is doubtful for Thursday's game against St. Louis.

"He did some therapy stuff today and that," coach Barry Trotz said. "He got worked on yesterday and all the good stuff. I would say he’s doubtful just because he hasn't skated for a couple days. We'll make sure he's healthy before we put him back in." Carlson didn't play on Monday due to a lower-body injury, but he is close to being ready to play again. Still, Washington is considering bringing up a defenseman.

Morgan Rielly (lower body) will not play Thursday against the New York Rangers.

Coach Mike Babcock isn't sure if Rielly will be available to play this weekend yet. The Leafs defender suffered a lower-body injury in Tuesday's win over Buffalo. He is listed as day-to-day.
Jan 18 - 12:20 PM

Patrik Laine (concussion) skated before Wednesday's morning session.

However, there is still no timetable for his return, according to coach Paul Maurice. Laine has missed Winnipeg's last five games with a concussion and the team has won just one time during that span.
Jan 18 - 11:46 AM

Marian Hossa recorded his 600th assist on a Tanner Kero goal in the second period as the Blackhawks beat the Avalanche 6-4 Tuesday night.

Hossa would not stop there. He got his 601st assist on Vince Hinostroza third period goal at the 8:11 mark and earned his 602nd with an empty netter by Kero at 19:49. Hossa becomes the 32nd player in NHL history with 500 goals and 600 assists.

Ryan Miller recorded his second shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over the Predators Tuesday night.

Miller has been hot since December 28. In the seven games leading up to the Canucks victory, he recorded five wins and two overtime losses with an average save percentage of .940. His first shutout of the season came in a 3-0 victory over the Coyotes January 4 and he has been under the .900 mark only one time in that span.
Jan 18 - 1:55 AM

John Gibson was nearly perfect in a 2-1 win over the Lightning Tuesday night with 27 saves on 28 shots.

Gibson entered the contest with a 5-1-1 record during his last eight games and in that span, he had save percentages of .913 or greater for an average of .956. He blanked Detroit on January 4 and Dallas on January 10, and while he came up one shy of getting his third shutout this month, his save percentage of .964 was stellar by any measure.
Jan 18 - 1:32 AM

Kevin Shattenkirk scored a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Shattenkirk cut Ottawa's lead to 3-2 late in the second period and he also helped set up Alexander Steen's power play goal early in the third period to make it 3-3. The Blues defenseman has four points in his last three contests. He has nine goals and 30 points in 45 games. It'll be interesting to see what the Blues will do with the pending unrestricted free agent. If they're unable to re-sign him, they could trade him before the deadline.
Jan 17 - 11:08 PM

Mike Hoffman scored a pair of goals in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the St. Louis Blues.

He extended his point streak to four games in the process. Hoffman scored a power play goal in the second period to give Ottawa a 2-1 lead and his goal in the final frame made it 5-3 for his team. He finished the game with a plus-3 rating and five shots on goal in 17:21 of ice time. Hoffman has 14 goals and 31 points in 38 games this season. Teammate Mark Stone also scored two goals in the victory.
