The Florida Panthers have traded Keaton Ellerby to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a fifth round draft pick.

The Kings have been dealing with some defensive depth issues due to injuries to Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene, so the addition of Ellerby makes sense. Ellerby is just 24 years old, but he's not much of an offensive force and therefore doesn't have any fantasy value in standard leagues.

Forward Joel Ward scored two goals to help the San Jose Sharks defeat the visiting St. Louis Blues 5-2 Wednesday night and advance to the Stanley Cup Championship Series for the first time in their history.

The Sharks coasted to the victory, grabbing a 4-0 lead before the Blues could break San Jose's shutout bid with a goal at 11:39 of the third period. Ward's goals were his fifth and sixth of the postseason. He also netted two in the Sharks' 6-3 triumph over the Blues in St. Louis on Monday. Logan Couture also had a big night for San Jose Wednesday, notching three points -- two assists and an empty-net goal. He assisted on Ward's second goal, which gave the Sharks a 3-0 lead early in the third. Couture then assisted on the Sharks' fourth goal, scored by Joonas Donskoi, his fifth of the postseason. Couture's goal, at 19:40 of the third period, was his eighth of the postseason. He also has 16 assists. Joe Pavelski opened the scoring at 3:57 of the first period with his 15th goal of the playoffs. The Sharks won the Western Conference Final in six games. They will face the Eastern Conference Final winner -- Pittsburgh or Tampa Bay -- in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired Erik Gudbranson and a 2016 fifth-round draft pick from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jared McCann, a 2016 second round pick, and a 2016 fourth rounder.

That's a hefty price to pay for Gudbranson, but he's still just 24 years old and will provide the Canucks with some needed defensive help. He's a defensive defenseman who finished the 2015-16 campaign with two goals, nine points, and 49 penalty minutes in 64 contests. On May 9 he inked a one-year extension with Florida that will pay him $3.5 million.

Jon Merrill has undergone successful shoulder surgery

Merrill didn't play past March 19 due to the injury. He's expected to need another four months to recover so he should be ready for the regular season, but you should probably temper expectations for him as this could limit his ability to get ready for 2016-17 over the summer and training camp. Additionally, any setback in his recovery could end up eating into the campaign.

Sidney Crosby scored a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Lightning in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Crosby picked up the primary assist on Phil Kessel's first period, power play goal. He then extended the Penguins' lead to 3-0 with his goal at the 19:34 mark of the second period. Crosby finished the game with four shots on goal, a plus-2 rating and two hits in 18:09 of ice time. The Pens captain six goals and 15 points in 17 postseason games in 2016. Kris Letang, Bryan Rust and Nick Bonino also found the back of the net for the Penguins. Game 7 will take place in Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The winner will advance to the Stanley Cup Final.
May 24 - 11:12 PM

Brian Elliott will play between the pipes in Game 6 on Wednesday.

The Blues started Jake Allen in the last two games, but they're switching things up again after Allen allowed four goals on 25 shots Monday night. Elliott has a 2.34 GAA and .925 save percentage in 17 starts in the 2016 playoffs.
May 24 - 5:18 PM

Kevan Miller has agreed to a four-year, $10 million contract extension with the Boston Bruins.

That represents a big raise over Miller's previous contract, which paid him $1.6 million over two years. Miller had five goals, 13 assists, and 53 penalty minutes in 71 games last season. The 28-year-old blueliner has 159 NHL games under his belt.
May 24 - 3:11 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins will start Matt Murray in Game 6 on Tuesday.

Marc-Andre Fleury got his first start of the playoffs on Sunday, but he allowed four goals on 25 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss. Although Murray similarly struggled in Game 4, he's the goaltender that's gotten Pittsburgh this far in the playoffs, so it's not surprising to see the Penguins go back to him when facing elimination.
May 24 - 12:58 PM

Joe Pavelski scored two goals and added an assist as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Blues 6-3 in St. Louis Monday night.

The victory gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Final. The Sharks can win the best-of-seven series and earn a berth to the Stanley Cup Final if they beat the Blues in Game 6 in San Jose Wednesday night. Pavelski, who now has 13 goals and nine assists in the playoffs, wasn't the only three-point producer for the Sharks Monday. Joe Thornton also had three points, all assists. He now has 14 assists in the postseason. Thornton and Pavelski both assisted on the game-opening goal by defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic at 3:51 of the opening period. Vlasic's goal was his first of the postseason. The Sharks tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Joel Ward (third of the playoffs) at 4:37 of the second period. Vlasic assisted on the Ward goal, which came on a power play. Pavelski tied the game again at 3-3 on another San Jose power play goal at 18:33 of the second. It was all Sharks in the third period. They got goals from Pavelski, Chris Tierney and Ward again to make it a 6-3 final.
May 23 - 11:21 PM

St. Louis star David Backes, who was questionable for Game 5 of the Western Conference Final Monday night because of an upper-body ailment, is indeed in the Blues' lineup against the San Jose Sharks.

Ditto for Blues forward Robby Fabbri, who was dealing with a lower-body injury.
May 23 - 8:05 PM

Steven Stamkos (blood clot) doesn't think he'll be ready for Game 6 on Tuesday night.

He said Sunday that he didn't believe there would be updates in the next few days, so he is unlikely to be available. Stamkos participated in Sunday's skate, but he didn't play in Game 5 versus Pittsburgh.
May 23 - 4:16 PM

David Backes (upper body) will take part in Monday's pregame warmup.

However, Blues coach Ken Hitchcock wouldn't say if Backes will play in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final versus San Jose. "We're going to dress the same lineup for warmup that we did the last game," Hitchcock said. "We had two extra forwards in there and one extra (defenseman). No changes, all those players are there. They'll dress for warmup and then we'll run a further evaluation after warmup." Backes played for just 5:34 on Saturday due to an upper-body injury, but he is a possibility to play Monday.
