One day after being called out by GM George McPhee, Braden Holtby stopped all 27 Florida Panthers shots en route to his first shutout of the season.

It's the fourth shutout of Holtby's career and easily his best start of the season. Fellow goalie Michal Neuvirth hasn't impressed at all, so it's entirely possible this start will earn Holtby another start Tuesday against the Panthers.

Mark Scheifele scored and added three assists in Friday's 5-1 preseason win over Edmonton.

Scheifele picked up assists on first period goals by Adam Lowry and Joel Armia. He extended Winnipeg's lead to 4-1 with his goal at the 17:57 mark of the third period and helped set up Kyle Connor's goal just over three minutes later. The 23-year-old scored 29 goals and 61 points in 71 games last season.

Dustin Byfuglien exited Friday's preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers and he will not return.

This is terrible news for the Jets, as Byfuglien is their most important blue liner. It's unclear what caused the injury, but some reporters believe Byfuglien injured his foot after blocking an Oscar Klefbom shot. We'll update his status as soon as more information is made available.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 24 shots in Friday's 1-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Even though the 'Hawks didn't dress any of their star players, it still doesn't take away from his performance tonight. Pittsburgh's other goalie, Matt Murray, is dealing with a thumb injury, so if Fleury keeps playing well, he has a chance to start the year as the team's starting goaltender. Still, Murray's presence lessens Fleury's fantasy value this season.

Jaden Schwartz is out for a minimum of four weeks with an elbow injury.

This update is in contrast to Thursday's report when Blues coach Ken Hitchcock was optimistic that Schwartz wouldn't be absent for long. It's particularly unfortunate because Schwartz was limited to just 33 games last season, so this is becoming an unwanted trend with the young forward. When he is healthy though, he is a very effective forward.

Mattias Janmark needs knee surgery and will miss the next five-to-six months.

Janmark has a joint disorder called Osteochondritis dissecans. We don't know when he started experiencing symptoms, but he missed Thursday's practice and then was later seen using crutches. He had 15 goals and 29 points in 73 games last season. Unfortunately this is just the latest and worst development in what has been a rough preseason for Dallas on the injury front.

Sidney Crosby was named the MVP of the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

It's been a pretty good year for Crosby, as he won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh and was named the Conn Smythe trophy winner (playoff MVP) during that run. The Penguins captain finishes the tournament with three goals and 10 points in six World Cup games. The players on Canada's top line (Crosby, Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron) scored the opening goal in five of their team's six games.

Brad Marchand's game-winning goal clinched the World Cup of Hockey for Team Canada, as they defeated Team Europe 2-1 on Thursday.

Team Canada looked sluggish this evening and found themselves down 1-0 until Patrice Bergeron scored a power play goal with under three minutes remaining in regulation. Marchand followed that up by scoring a shorthanded goal with 43 seconds left in the third period. Marchand has a fantastic tournament for Canada. The 28-year-old scored two goals in the semifinal against Russia, a goal and an assist in Game 1 of the final and the game-winning goal in tonight's game.

Mike Hoffman scored a pair of goals in Thursday's 4-3 OT win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Hoffman's second period goal gave the Senators a 3-2 lead and he scored the game-winner 19 seconds into overtime. The 26-year-old scored 29 goals and 59 points in 78 games last season. He's scored 56 goals in his first two full NHL seasons. Matt Puempel and Bobby Ryan also scored for Ottawa on Thursday.
Sep 29 - 10:27 PM

Brayden Point scored in Thursday's 2-0 preseason win over the Florida Panthers.

Point, who's one of Tampa Bay's top prospects, has now scored in back-to-back exhibition games. The Lightning are loaded with depth up front, but it'll be interesting to see if Point can force his way onto the roster. The 20-year-old scored an incredible 88 points in 48 games with WHL Moose Jaw.

Andrew Shaw has been suspended for three preseason games for boarding Connor Hobbs from behind.

That's not likely to impact Shaw any, even from the perspective of getting ready for the regular season. Montreal still has five preseason games left, so even with Shaw missing the next three, he'll still have time to get in some additional work before the season opener.

Although there was some concern that Aaron Ekblad suffered a concussion during the World Cup, that wasn't the final diagnosis.

Ekblad was dealing with concussion-like symptoms, but what it turned out to be was whiplash. "The way I was told, it was about blood flow," Ekblad said. "When you get whiplash like that, there's restricted blood flow to the head and that causes systems because the blood doesn't drain out of head as fast. That's why you get symptoms without it being a concussion." While an injury is never good news, the fact that it wasn't a concussion has to come as a relief, especially after he dealt with one in January. He took part in Thursday's morning skate.
