Thomas Vanek had a goal and an assist in the Buffalo Sabres' 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday.

It was the sixth time Vanek had multiple points in 11 games this season. The NHL's leading scorer entering play has been absolutely unconscious to start the season, with 11 goals and 23 points, an average of over two points per game. Vanek's centerman, Cody Hodgson, had a pair of assists and Christian Ehrhoff scored his first goal of the season. Rookie Mikhail Grigorenko also had an assist for his first point since Jan. 31.

Rene Bourque is hoping to build off the success he had in last year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.

Bourque struggled during the regular season, registering only 9 goals and 16 points in 63 games. He caught fire in the playoffs however, scoring 8 goals and 11 points in just 17 games. "I want to be ready for the season-opener on October 8th, obviously. I want to be in the best shape that I can be," said Bourque. "I’m going to work as hard as I can the next couple of weeks and prepare myself as much as I can."

Ryan Murray did not practice with his teammates on the first day of Blue Jackets training camp because he’s still rehabbing a knee injury.

Murray was supposed to practice with the afternoon group of players on Friday, but never hit the ice. Blue Jackets General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen said Murray’s absence was just part of his rehab schedule. "This is part of his rehab process, and he’s not going to skate everyday" said Kekalainen. "So, today was just one of those days where he’s not going to skate." The Jackets are counting on the former second overall pick in 2012 to be a key part of their defense this season.

Jamie McGinn missed the opening day of Avalanche training camp with a back injury.

McGinn is still recovering from off-season back surgery. Avs head coach Patrick Roy said that McGinn is day-to-day. The 26-year-old had 19 goals and 38 points for Colorado last season.

Joe Sakic is now the general manager of the Colorado Avalanche.

The former Avalanche GM, Greg Sherman, will stay on as the team's assistant general manager. While we can't know what goes on in the Avalanche's organization behind closed doors, from the outside looking in, this looks like just a change on paper. Sakic already outranked Sherman as the executive vice president of hockey operations (a title Sakic still holds) and had been the public face on the team's front office for some time now.

Claude Giroux (lower body) is expected to miss the first two weeks of training camp.

"This just happened today. Its the first day of camp and guys go 100 miles per-hour and things happen," said Flyers GM Ron Hextall. "Obviously its not the way you want to start. That's the hand we were dealt and we're going to deal with it." The good news is Giroux won't miss any playing time, barring a setback. Unless his condition gets worse, this shouldn't impact his fantasy value for the 2014-15 campaign, although it's certainly troubling that Giroux is already dealing with lower-body issues.

Drew Doughty sustained an upper-body injury over the summer.

Doughty consequently didn't skate with the rest of the Kings on Friday. It's not clear how serious the injury is, but obviously he still has weeks to recover before he's in danger of missing any playing time.

Ryan Whitney will participate in the St. Louis Blues' training camp on a tryout basis.

Whitney had 23 points and 52 penalty minutes in 45 AHL games last season. He also participated in seven contests with the Florida Panthers, but didn't record a point. At his height, Whitney was one of the league's top offensive defenseman, but we don't think he'll have any fantasy value in 2014-15.

Despite earlier expectations that Sidney Crosby (undisclosed) would miss the start of training camp, he was on the ice for 50 minutes on Friday.

The decision for Crosby to skate was made Friday morning. "I just talked to [trainer Chris Steward] and he said he was comfortable with me going out there for a little bit," Crosby said. "I was happy to hear that. Hopefully, I can put [together] a string of days here." In other words, it doesn't sound like Crosby is completely over whatever's bothering him, but he feels he'd probably be able to play in a regular season game in his current state, so this situation isn't too concerning. He might practice with the Penguins on Saturday.

Michael Cammalleri skated alongside Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr in the Devils' first training camp practice.

A lot can change between now and the start of the season, but it wouldn't be surprising if this line is used in the season opener. Jagr and Zajac already have chemistry with each other while Cammalleri was brought in to help bolster the Devils' offense. Cammalleri had 26 goals and 45 points in 63 contests with Calgary last season.

Jarome Iginla will skate alongside Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly during his first season in Colorado.

Coach Patrick Roy has already revealed how he wants his top-two lines to look prior to the start of practices at training camp. "It's exciting to get going and to be able to play with such good young players," said Iginla. "I feel like I can still do the things I've always done, but I know there will be so many other good players around me." The veteran winger was successful last season on Boston's top line with David Krejci and Milan Lucic and he should be productive again in 2014-15.

Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Minnesota at an average annual value of $1.25 million.

Kuemper posted a solid rookie season in 2013-14, going 12-8-4 with a .915 save percentage and 2.43 goals against average. Considering Thursday's news that Josh Harding will be sidelined for at least a month with a broken foot, Kuemper slots in as at least the backup goaltender out of the gate with the potential to win the starting job over Niklas Backstrom if the veteran can't get his career back on track.
