John Mitchell is day-to-day with the flu.

Mitchell will not be available for Monday's game against the Phoenix Coyotes. He's been a pleasant surprise for the Avalanche this season with seven points in 10 games. Colorado is already playing without forwards Steve Downie and Gabe Landeskog due to injuries and they haven't been able to re-sign restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly. "You got to go out there and play the hand you're dealt. We're fine. We can't worry about who's not here, who's not in the lineup," Avs coach Joe Sacco said. "We have to focus on what we can control and that's the players that are available to us."

John Tavares scored the overtime winner in the Islanders' 2-1 game three win over Washington.

Tavares scored just 15 seconds into overtime to give the Islanders the win, and a 2-1 lead in the series. Kyle Okposo's goal at the 12:37 mark opening the scoring, and that lead held until Nicklas Backstrom tied the game in the third period. Game four in Long Island will take place on Tuesday night. The goal was Tavares' first of the playoffs. He now has three points in three games in the 2015 post-season.

Mike Fisher (lower body) won't play in game three against Chicago on Sunday.

The Predators will have their work cut out for themselves as they will be without Fisher and Shea Weber. Fisher also missed game two, which the Predators won, but it will be interesting to see when he is able to return. He should be considered day-to-day right now.

Antoine Vermette will play in game three of Chicago's best-of-seven series against the Nashville Predators.

Vermette was a healthy scratch in games one and two, so he will be making his 2015 playoff debut. The Hawks paid a big price to acquire Vermette before the trade deadline but he has yet to deliver for them. It will be interesting to see if he could develop some chemistry with his new teammates before the playoffs end for Chicago.

Craig Anderson was the first goaltender off the ice during Ottawa's morning skate on Sunday.

The first goaltender off the ice is usually the one who starts later on that day. The Senators are trailing 2-0 in their best of seven series against Montreal and Andrew Hammond has given up a couple of bad goals so far. Anderson was Ottawa's starting goaltender two years ago when they eliminated the Canadiens in the first round of the post-season.

Nicklas Backstrom found himself back on the first line in practice Saturday.

Backstrom replaced Evgeni Kuznetsov between Alex Ovechkin and Joel Ward while Kuznetsov moved down to the second unit between Marcus Johansson and Troy Brouwer. Just an FYI as Backstrom is coming off a three point effort in Game 2.

Jakob Silfverberg netted the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph against the Jets on Saturday night in Game 2 of their first-round series.

Silfverberg scored with 21 seconds remaining in the game after getting away with a bit of a hold on Bryan Little's stick. Silfverberg had 13 goals and 39 points during the regular season. Patrick Maroon potted the other goal at 10:43 of the third period on the power play to begin the third-period rally. The Ducks head to Winnipeg with a 2-0 series advantage.
Apr 19 - 1:41 AM

Adam Pardy scored the lone goal for the Jets in their 2-1 loss to the Ducks in Game 2 of their first-round series Saturday night.

Pardy had not played since the regular-season finale, his return in Game 2 making Ben Chiarot a scratch. Pardy last scored Jan. 26, 2011, when he was with the Flames. He looked like a natural goal scorer on this one, shimmying to get the first shot on net, then wrapping it around to beat Frederik Andersen. Pardy had nine assists in 55 games this season. Adam Lowry and Mathieu Perreault got the assists on his goal.
Apr 19 - 1:39 AM

Sidney Crosby scored twice to lead the Penguins to a 4-3 win against the Rangers in Game 2 of their first-round series Saturday night.

Crosby scored two goals in a row in the second period, at 14:07 and 18:46. The two markers surpass last season’s playoff total of one in 13 games. Crosby is still just as dangerous as ever, even if his goal/point (28/84) ratio was "down." Chris Kunitz (goal, two assists) and Brandon Sutter (goal, assist) registered the other goals. Pittsburgh killed off six of seven Rangers power plays in this game.
Apr 18 - 11:17 PM

Mathieu Perreault is in the lineup for the Jets on Saturday night in Game 2 against the Ducks.

Perreault suffered a lower-body injury April 9 and hasn’t played since. The 27-year-old recorded 18 goals and 41 points in 62 games during the regular season. Perreault took line rushes with Adam Lowry and Lee Stempniak.

Sabres general manager Tim Murray said that he is "disappointed for our fans" in not landing the first-overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

That should make Jack Eichel, the Sabres' likely second-overall pick, feel great. The Sabres, the league’s worst team, basically pulled out every stop to guarantee the best chances at winning the draft lottery. But now they will draft second. Eichel is a tremendous prospect in his own right, with the ability to hasten Buffalo's rebuild. He called Buffalo a "great hockey city" and that "it would be really nice to play there." He had 26 goals and 71 points at Boston University this season.
Apr 18 - 9:12 PM

The Edmonton Oilers have have won the NHL Draft Lottery, likely meaning Connor McDavid will go there with the first-overall pick in June 26-27 draft.

Buffalo's season of tanking gave them the best odds (20 percent) at the top pick, but now they end up second and the likely home for Jack Eichel. Edmonton had an 11.5 percent chance at the top pick. McDavid is considered a generational prospect who can change a team’s course the day he is drafted. The 18-year-old registered 44 goals and 120 points in 47 games in the OHL this season. In his three seasons, he scored 97 goals and recorded 285 points. It's the fourth time in six years Edmonton will be picking first overall. Centers Ryan-Nugent Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and McDavid could soon be the envy of the league.
