John Mitchell is day-to-day with the flu.

Mitchell will not be available for Monday's game against the Phoenix Coyotes. He's been a pleasant surprise for the Avalanche this season with seven points in 10 games. Colorado is already playing without forwards Steve Downie and Gabe Landeskog due to injuries and they haven't been able to re-sign restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly. "You got to go out there and play the hand you're dealt. We're fine. We can't worry about who's not here, who's not in the lineup," Avs coach Joe Sacco said. "We have to focus on what we can control and that's the players that are available to us."

Pekka Rinne earned his paycheck during Thursday's Game 4 triple overtime win.

Rinne made 44 of 47 saves as he carried the Predators to victory, which included multiple overtime penalty kills. The victory was also the first time Nashville had ever won a playoff game at home in overtime and it was the longest game in team history. With the series tied at two, it's now a best-of-three with Game 5 set for Saturday.

Brent Burns scored another pair of goals as San Jose fell in Game 4 in triple overtime to Nashville.

Burns now has four goals and 13 points through nine games this postseason. Both lead all defenders, and he currently sits atop the scoring table for all players as well.

Cody Eakin scored the overtime winner for the Stars in Game 4 on Thursday night, sending the series with the Blues back to Dallas squared at two.

Eakin chose a great moment to score his first goal of the playoffs after picking up seven assists in nine post-season games so far. The 24-year-old has picked up the offensive slack left by Tyler Seguin and his injury. Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza each had two points to boost the Stars.

Washington was the second-best team when it came to goals-per-game at 3.02 and they were second in goals allowed at 2.33 goals-per-game.

Jaromir Jagr has agreed to a one-year extension with the Florida Panthers.

The financial terms of the deal weren't revealed, but Jagr came with a $3.5 million base salary in 2015-16 and could earn another $1,905,000 in performance bonuses. Although he's 44 years old, Jagr is coming off of a great season where he scored 27 goals and 66 points in 79 contests. He currently ranks third on the all-time list in points with 1,868, which points him 19 shy of Mark Messier and the number two spot. "Jaromir has had a tremendous influence on our younger players and has been a key offensive contributor on our team," Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said. "We are happy to have him back as we look to build off this year’s playoff appearance."

The Arizona Coyotes have named John Chayka as their new general manager as part of a major restructuring of their front office.

Chayka previously served as the team's assistant general manager. He's just 26 years old and co-founded the hockey analytics firm Stathletes Inc. before joining the Coyotes organization. Meanwhile Alternate Governor Gary Drummond will become the team's new president of hockey operations. Head coach Dave Tippett will continue to serve as the team's bench boss, but he's adding executive vice president of hockey operations to his title. On top of that, Tippett has inked a five-year extension with Arizona.

Penguins goalie Matt Murray starred again Wednesday night, recording 34 saves in regulation and overtime to help Pittsburgh edge the visiting Washington Capitals 3-2 and take a 3-1 lead in the teams' second-round playoff series.

Murray has become the story of the NHL's postseason. Initially pressed into the spotlight after veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury suffered a concussion, the rookie has shone with a record of 6-1. He has yielded three or fewer goals in five of his seven playoff starts. His goals-against average in the postseason is 1.81 and his save percentage is .944. Needless to say, look for the Pens to stay with the hot hand and go with Murray again in Game 5 of this series Saturday night.
May 4 - 11:48 PM

Patric Hornqvist's goal at 2:34 of the first overtime period gave the Penguins a 3-2 triumph in Pittsburgh Wednesday night and a 3-1 lead over the Washington Capitals in the teams' best-of-seven, second-round playoff series.

Hornqvist's goal was his fifth in the postseason and second in his past two games. He also contributed his third assist of the playoffs on a first-period goal by Trevor Daley. Daley's goal, his first of the playoffs, came at 9:16 of the opening period and tied the game at 1-1. Veteran Matt Cullen nudged the Pens ahead 2-1 temporarily with his third goal of the postseason, scored at 3:07 of the second period. Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Dumoulin assisted on the goals by Cullen and Hornqvist and he now has three on the postseason. The Pens would take this series with a win in Game 5 Saturday night.

Tyler Seguin (lower body) won't be back in the lineup for Game 4 against the St. Louis Blues.

He is skating back in Texas, but it doesn't seem likely that he will rejoin the team on the road. Seguin has played in just one game during the 2016 playoffs.
May 4 - 4:16 PM

Marcus Johansson (upper body) will be available to play in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

He didn't skate on Tuesday because of an upper-body injury, but he is OK to play versus Pittsburgh. Johansson stayed in Game 3 after passing his concussion tests.
May 4 - 12:33 PM

Mike Ribeiro was scratched in Game 3 against San Jose as a coach's decision.

Coach Peter Laviolette said it was just "a lineup decision I made" and he wouldn't speak more about the matter. Ribeiro has one assist and a minus-3 rating in nine postseason matches. He has also won just 35 percent of his faceoffs. The Predators won Tuesday 4-1, so Ribeiro could be back in the press box for Game 4 on Thursday night.
