Jonathan Toews had nine penalty minutes for a single incident on Friday.

Toews was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding the Sharks' Joe Thornton, but then Toews continued to push Thornton until the two finally dropped the gloves and fought. Toews ended up with a second minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and five for fighting. "The last few games, including last season, there’s always some stuff going on, be it after the whistles or during the play. I guess it just comes down to players trying to get under your skin and test you a little bit," Toews said. "I figured at some point I had to stand up for myself. It came down to that, I guess." Before Friday, Toews had just one minor penalty all season.

Los Angeles Kings center Jarret Stoll has been arrested in Las Vegas for possession of cocaine. is reporting that the Las Vegas police department confirmed the arrest to the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas. Stoll is expected to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and this will certainly put a damper on his attempt to sign back with the Kings or with a new NHL team. Stay tuned.

Alex Galchenyuk scored the overtime winner in Friday's 3-2 win over Ottawa.

The Canadiens failed to close the game out in the final minutes of the third period, but end up with the win regardless. Max Pacioretty tied the game at one in the second period, while P.K. Subban gave Montreal a 2-1 lead later on in the period. Senators goalie Andrew Hammond will likely want Galchenyuk's goal back. Montreal now has a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Game three will take place in Ottawa on Sunday night.
Apr 17 - 10:12 PM

Nicklas Backstrom had one goal and two assists in Washington's 4-3 game two win over the New York Islanders.

The Capitals found themselves down 2-0 and 3-1 in the game, but they managed to claw their way back into the series with a big win on home ice. Backstrom picked up assists on second period goals by Karl Alzner and Alex Ovechkin. He scored the game-tying goal at the 3:44 mark of the third period before Jason Chimera completed the comeback later on in the final frame. The series now heads to Long Island tied 1-1. Game three will be played at 12:00 PM EST on Sunday afternoon.

Max Pacioretty will indeed play in Game Two on Friday night against the Ottawa Senators.

And with that, the Montreal Canadiens have their top scorer back in the lineup. Pacioretty has five goals and 11 points in 21 career playoff games, however he's gone pointless in four games and 13 shots in the playoffs versus Ottawa.

It's official, Philipp Grubauer will tag in for the sick Braden Holtby in Friday's Game Two against the New York Islanders.

Tough news for the Capitals who trail in the series 1-0. But it is what it is, and Grubauer has played well for AHL Hershey this season. He's posted a 27-17-5 record with a .921 save percentage and a 2.30 GAA in 49 games. This will be his first career NHL playoff game as well.
Apr 17 - 6:27 PM

Kevin Bieksa is a game-time decision for Game 2 on Friday.

Bieksa is apparently dealing with an illness rather than an injury. The odds are in favor of him being in the lineup. If he can't play though then Ryan Stanton will likely draw in after serving as a healthy scratch in Game 1.
Apr 17 - 4:10 PM

Mark Stone (wrist) will be a game-time decision on Friday.

Stone suffered a microfracture as a result of a slash from P.K. Subban. Stone was on the ice Friday morning to fire some pucks and practice his stickhandling, but he skated off after less than 10 minutes. He had 26 goals and 64 points in 80 regular season contests.
Apr 17 - 12:37 PM

Philipp Grubauer has been called up by the Washington Capitals.

Braden Holtby is apparently feeling under the weather, so Grubauer joined the Capitals as a precautionary measure. It's still possible that Holtby will play and if it becomes apparent that that's the case then Grubauer will likely be returned to the minors so that he can help AHL Hershey as it finishes off its regular season schedule this weekend.

Logan Couture thinks that rather than a coaching change, the Sharks need a culture change.

"Not great," Couture said about the team's culture. "That's my personal opinion, and that's all I'm going to say about it." Although the Sharks missed the playoffs in 2014-15 for the just the first time since the salary cap era began, they've often been seen as underperformers when compared to the talent on their roster. With that in mind, it's easy to buy into the idea that the Sharks have a culture problem. Couture also noted that he was disappointed when the Sharks blowing a 3-0 series lead to Los Angeles in the 2014 playoffs didn't lead to the team being hungrier in 2014-15.

Craig Berube has been relieved of his duties by the Philadelphia Flyers.

The timing is a bit surprising, if only because when Flyers GM Ron Hextall declined to immediately relieve Berube of his duties it opened the door to the possibility that Hextall was waiting to see what the coaching market would be like before making a move. Instead Hextall fired him mere days after announcing that he would be weighing his options. In his second year with the club, Berube's Flyers failed to make the playoffs. Meanwhile the man he replaced, Peter Laviolette, is coaching Nashville in the first round. Berube finished with a 75-58-28 record overall.

John Klingberg has reportedly agreed to a seven-year, $29.75 million extension with the Dallas Stars.

Klingberg had 11 goals and 40 points in 65 games with the Dallas Stars as a rookie in 2014-15. He obviously has the potential to become a great offensive defenseman and it helps that he should continue to get plenty of power-play ice time on a team that has a great core of skilled forwards. This is still a big gamble for the Stars given that it's all based on just one season of play, but in a couple years we might look back on this contract as a steal.
