Joffrey Lupul (forearm) participated in Wednesday's optional practice.

"It's my third day of skating so we'll see how it goes . . . it's truly day to day," said Lupul referring to his recovery from a fractured forearm. "It's the type of injury that if you rush it back, you stand the chance to get right back to square one, so we'll be careful not to let that happen." The cast on his forearm has been removed and he's been put through rigorous drills with skating coach Barbara Underhill. He did some stickhandling as well, but didn't take any shots. There's no timetable for his return, but he was originally slated to be back in mid-late March.

The Anaheim Ducks grabbed Tomas Fleischmann from the Florida Panthers for Dany Heatley and a third-round pick.

"The Flash" hasn't enjoyed a great season with Florida, but he's shown flashes of brilliance in his NHL career, making him an intriguing piece in Anaheim. It doesn't hurt that he has money to earn, either.

Scary stuff for Buffalo Sabres prospect Mark Pysyk: he was reportedly hospitalized after collapsing during a pickup game of basketball.

He was described as "fairly alert and his vital signs were close to normal" while he was being transported by paramedics, so that's a good thing. It's unclear how much this incident may affect his future in the sport.

Dallas coach Lindy Ruff was extremely critical of Kari Lehtonen following the Stars' 5-4 shootout loss to Colorado Friday night.

In fact, Ruff seemed to blame the loss entirely on Lehtonen. "I know this is hard, but the goaltending performance doesn't match the effort of the team,' Ruff said. 'You need goaltending. It's as simple as that. There's nights that he has to steal games, there's nights where he has to out-perform the other guy. Our goaltending has been tough on our team, and I think that's where the frustration is." There is no telling whether Lehtonen will get the start Sunday against Anaheim. It's not as if newly-acquired Jhonas Enroth, who has yet to win in four starts with the Stars, has been any better.

Nathan MacKinnon was benched for much of the third period in Friday night's 5-4 shootout win over Dallas.

He played only 1:48 in the third frame and did not participate in the shootout after getting no shots on goal in the first two periods. Colorado coach Patrick Roy indicated that MacKinnon would play on the team's third line Saturday night against Minnesota. Tough love!

The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Tim Gleason in a trade that sent Jack Hillen and a fourth-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes.

It hasn't been a great season for Gleason, who has seven points and a -18 rating (although with 44 PIM) in 55 games so far in 2014-15. Playing for Washington may at least give him a boost, though he's never scored more than 21 points in any single NHL season.

Newly-acquired Kimmo Timonen could play a key role with the Blackhawks down the stretch.

The Hawks have been riddled with injuries on their blueline. Johnny Oduya and Trevor van Riemsdyk are out in the short-term and Michal Roszival has lost his effectiveness. Enter the 40-year-old Timonen. Once he is cleared to play (blood clots), and that could come as early as Monday, he will play a prominent role in a five-on-five role as well as on the Hawks' second power play. Consider picking him up next week.

Jonathan Drouin made an unbelievable pass to set up Brian Boyle with Tampa's first goal in a 4-0 win over Chicago Friday night.

It was a blind behind-the-back beauty as Drouin was just about to circle behind the Chicago net. For those of you who missed it, here is a link: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=35&id=765493&lang=en Drouin will be an NHL star. It's not a matter of if, but when.

Damon Severson (ankle) could return to the New Jersey lineup as early as Tuesday.

By the time Tuesday rolls around Severson will have missed 31 games. He got off to a great start and led the Devils in power play time on ice before his injury so look for him to regain his spot on the point eventually. "It feels like it's soon. My body, as far as the ankle, is healed. My conditioning is just a step off," Severson said. "I need those few extra days of conditioning to make sure I'm back up to speed. "I'm just waiting to get back. It's been a long wait. Every day it's gotten a little better. I haven't had any setbacks or anything like that, so that's been a positive for me." Stay tuned as Severson had four goals and 12 points in 32 games with six assists on the power play before getting hurt on December 15.

The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Lou Lamoriello will remain the GM of the New Jersey Devils even if they miss the playoffs.

Well, missing the playoffs looks like a certainty with the Devils in 12th place, nine points out of eighth. "He knows the game and he knows the game well," goaltender Cory Schneider said. "I think sometimes he even has a different perspective of the game than most other people do."
