Matt Frattin (knee) hasn't been cleared for contact yet, but it sounds like he's getting closer.

That's great news for the 25-year-old forward, who has 10 points in 10 games. He's obviously unlikely to connect on nearly 40 percent of his shots upon his return, but it's possible he can have nice value going forward.

The New Jersey Devils have named Adam Oates and Scott Stevens as co-coaches.

We are not sure how this is going to work but both will be under GM Lou Lamoriello for the next few games as Lamoriello is expected lead the Devils in the short term. This should be interesting as perhaps Stevens will be in charge of the blueliners with Oates taking over the forwards.

The New York Islanders have placed Jaroslav Halak on the injured reserve list with a lower body injury.

Well it looks like Halak has been injured all along as he did not dress on Tuesday. The Islanders recalled Kevin Poulin this morning. Halak last played a week ago so he is eligible to return at any time. Reserve him for now.

Josh Rimer of Sportsnet.ca reports that Paul MacLean will not be the next coach of the New Jersey Devils but it looks like it will be Adam Oates.

Oates last coached the Washington Capitals in the 2013-14 season. Stay tuned as GM Lou Lamoriello is expected to talk to the media at 10:30ET Saturday morning.
Dec 27 - 10:20 AM

With Sergei Bobrovsky not at morning practice, Curtis McElhinney is expected to get the start in goal for Columbus on Saturday.

McElhinney is only 1-6-1 this season with a weak 3.49 GAA and a .895 save percentage. Adjust your lineup accordingly.

Scott Hartnell is on the ice in morning practice alongside Ryan Johansen and Jeremy Morin.

It looks like Hartnell will be back in the lineup as he has been out of action since December 11 with a broken finger. Since he is still on the injured reserve list, the Blue Jackets will have to make a move to get him off the list and into the lineup tonight.

Patrik Elias has tested positive for the mumps.

Elias missed Tuesday's game due to the disease and he shouldn't be expected to play on Saturday. It's hard to say what impact this will have the team's upcoming lines as Peter DeBoer's firing means that new unit combinations might be coming anyways.
Dec 26 - 1:38 PM

The New Jersey Devils have reportedly fired head coach Peter DeBoer.

DeBoer led the Devils to the 2012 Stanley Cup Final in his first season, but New Jersey hasn't made it to the playoffs since. That's not entirely his fault as GM Lou Lamoriello has struggled to build a competitive team since Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk left the club in back-to-back summers. That being said, this comes less than a week after DeBoer lamented after a loss to Washington that the Capitals "were fresher than us, bigger, stronger, faster, deeper and their best players were their best players." That doesn't sound like the words of a man that still had faith in his team's ability and perhaps that played a role in his departure. Not that it's shocking that the Devils would fire a coach when facing a third straight season of missing the playoffs even without that.
Dec 26 - 12:39 PM

Brandon Sutter's test results came back negative for the mumps.

In light of that Sutter has been cleared to come out of isolation. It's not clear if he'll also be available for Saturday's game, but with all the players the Penguins are missing, they could certainly use the help.
Dec 26 - 11:22 AM

Steve Downie has the mumps.

Downie hasn't played since Dec. 20 and it's not clear how much more time he'll miss due to the disease. For now he'll remain in isolation from the team. In the meantime, the mixture of injuries and sick players in Pittsburgh might lead to Bryan Rust continuing to receive ice time on a line with Sidney Crosby.

Aaron Ekblad has already broken Florida's franchise record for assists by a rookie defenseman.

He has 14 helpers in 32 games, which surpasses Dmitry Kulikov's total of 13 during the 2009-10 campaign. Ed Jovanovski had 21 points as a rookie and Ekblad is close to breaking that record as well. He leads all rookie blueliners in goals (5), assists (14), points (19) and plus-minus (plus-6). He also ranks second among all first-year players with 22:05 of average ice time per game.

Jack Eichel's presence alone makes the United States a contender in the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship, which kicks off on Boxing Day in Toronto and Montreal.

Eichel is widely considered as the best U.S. prospect since Mike Modano in 1988. He would be a shoe-in for first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft if it weren't for Canadian prodigy Connor McDavid, who seems to have the edge on Eichel for now. Nonetheless, a New Year's Eve showdown between the two marvels might shift the tide if Eichel can outshine McDavid. The Boston University freshman will be one to watch over the tournament, along with 16-year-old Austin Matthews and 18-year-old's Alex Tuch, Sonny Milano and Dylan Larkin.
