Troy Brouwer (illness) will not play Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.

Brouwer was considered questionable entering the game. Wojtek Wolski, who had been a healthy scratch recently, will likely replace Brouwer on the second line.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Derek Ryan to a one-year/$1.425 million contract.

Ryan only received $600,000 from the Hurricanes last season so he got a nice raise. The Bill Masterton Memorial Finalist had 11 goals and 29 points in 67 games last season. He should be a 30-35 point center this season.

The New York Rangers will reportedly hire Lindy Ruff as an assistant coach.

The New York Post's Larry Brooks points out that the deal is not done, but it will be. Ruff spent the last four years as the head coach of the Dallas Stars and he held the same role with the Buffalo Sabres for 15 years. Ruff will be in charge of handling the Rangers' defense. Jeff Beaukeboom, who coached the defense last year, will join New York's scouting staff.

The Calgary Flames have acquired Travis Hamonic and a conditional fourth-round pick from the New York Islanders.

The Islanders have received a first-round pick in 2018, a second-round pick in 2018 and another conditional second-round pick in 2019 or 2020. It's an interesting fit for Hamonic, as the Flames already have a loaded blue line with guys like Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton and T.J. Brodie. Hamonic, 26, had three goals and 11 assists in 49 games in 2016-17. Hamonic has three years remaining on his contract at a reasonable cap hit of $3.857 million. The Flames have put together one of the best blue lines in the league.

The Colorado Avalanche selected Conor Timmins with the first pick in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

The Avalanche clearly believe their defense needed some work, as they drafted Cale Makar fourth overall before taking Timmins on Saturday. Timmins, 18, missed being part of the 2016 draft by just three days. Timmins is a slick, puck-moving defenseman that has been with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for the last two seasons. In his first campaign in the junior ranks, he picked up just 13 points in 60 contests, but last season he made an impressive leap. Timmins’ 61 points in 67 games helped vault him into a top prospect in the 2017 draft. Scouts are impressed by his strong shot and solid skating ability. The knock on him is that he tends to get himself into some trouble with turnovers at inopportune times.

Nolan Patrick was not upset about going No. 2 overall and he thought he would heading to the Flyers.

"I kind of had a feeling I was going to end up in Philly, and I'm real excited about the chance to go there," said Patrick. "It's a special day for me and my family." He feels he didn't play at all like himself in 2016-17 and is confident that a good summer will get him back to performing at 100 percent. Patrick's size and maturity could make him ready to make the jump to the NHL as early as next season.

The St. Louis Blues have acquired Brayden Schenn from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Jori Lehtera, the 27th overall pick in 2017, and a conditional first rounder in 2018.

Schenn had 25 goals and 55 points in 79 games last season, making it his second straight campaign where he reached that 55-point mark. While Schenn never developed into an offensive star, he's a solid contributor that should do well for the Blues. It'll be worth keeping an eye on Schenn during training camp to see how he fits into St. Louis' roster. The ideal would obviously be seeing Schenn on a line with Vladimir Tarasenko, but that's far from a certainty.

Cody Glass has been taken with the sixth overall pick by the Vegas Golden Knights.

Glass makes history as the first player ever taken by the Vegas Golden Knights. He's coming off a fantastic year with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks. After scoring 27 points in 65 games last season, the 18-year-old put up 32 goals and 94 points in 69 contests this year. He added nine points in 11 playoff games with the ‘Hawks and three points in three games with Canada at the 2017 under-18 World Hockey Championship. The 6-foot-2, 180 pounder is an incredible playmaker with great hands, terrific vision and sound hockey IQ. He’s likely a year or two away from being a full-time NHLer, but when he arrives, there’s a good chance he’ll be an impact player for the young franchise.

The Dallas Stars have selected Miro Heiskanen with the third pick in the 2017 Draft.

The Stars need a number one defenseman and Heiskanen should fit the bill in a few years. Heiskanen excels at a lot of the things teams want from their top defenseman in today’s NHL. The 17-year-old is a very good skater, he’s fully capable of carrying the puck up the ice and he’s also smart enough to be an effective player in his own end. Playing in his first professional season in Finland, Heiskanen scored five goals and five assists, while averaging almost 19 minutes of ice time in 37 games, which is pretty impressive for a teenage blue liner. He was also incredible for Finland during their silver medal run at the 2017 U18 World Hockey Championship, as he recorded two goals and 10 assists in seven games. The Stars just got themselves a good one.

The Philadelphia Flyers have selected Nolan Patrick with the second overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

He fell to the Flyers at second overall because the Devils went with Nico Hischier first overall. Patrick was a consensus top two pick leading up to the draft and it’s easy to see why. The WHL star is a 6-foot-2, 198 pound center with high-end offensive ability. He’s averaged more than a point-per-game in in each of his three seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings. The 18-year-old put up an outstanding 102 points in 72 games during the 2015-16 season (he was 17 at the time). The knock on Patrick coming into the draft, is that he missed so much time last year. He sat out 35 games because of an upper-body injury during Brandon’s regular season and all four games of the playoffs because of a lower-body ailment. In 33 games with Brandon, he scored 20 goals and 46 points. Even though he’s dealt with his fair share of injuries, his size, skill and vision make him an incredible young talent. Patrick has the potential to develop into a number one center in the near future.

The New Jersey Devils have selected Nico Hischier with the first overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Going into the season, Hischier being taken over Nolan Patrick would have been a huge shock. There was a little buzz surrounding Hischier coming into the 2016-17 junior season, but he wasn’t mentioned in the same breath as Patrick until he exploded onto the scene at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, where he was dynamic for Switzerland. The 18-year-old posted seven points in five games on a mediocre Swiss team. When he was growing up, Hischier’s favorite player was former Red Wings superstar Pavel Datsyuk, and you can certainly see the influence the Russian has had on the youngster. Hischier’s skill level, puck handling ability and vision are all great. In his first season in North America, he put up 38 goals and 86 points in 57 games with the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads. He has the potential to develop into a top point producer at the next level, helping the Devils' ailing offense and potentially eventually playing with Taylor Hall.

The Washington Capitals have signed T.J. Oshie to an eight-year, $46 million contract extension.

That works out to a $5.75 million annual cap hit, which is on the low end of what we thought he would get, but presumably the Capitals got him to agree to a lower AAV in exchange for a longer contract. In that regard this deal might hurt Washington in the long-term as Oshie will turn 31 in December. For now though his continued presence will be big for the Capitals as he's been a key member of the squad. He's breached the 50-point mark in each of his last four seasons and had 33 goals and 56 points in 68 contests in 2016-17.
