Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler has been suspended two games for charging into Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith.

The play happened during Thursday's 2-1 Vancouver victory over the Coyotes. Edler was assessed a five-minute major after running into Smith behind the net late in the second period. Smith was injured on the play and finished the period but wasn't back in net for the third. He was replaced by Jason Labarbera. Edler will miss games on Saturday at Los Angeles and Sunday at Colorado. He is eligible to return on Tuesday when the Canucks host the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Ryan O'Reilly has inked a seven-year, $52.5 million contract with the Buffalo Sabres.

O'Reilly will get the vast majority of his money in the form of signing bonuses. He is a better player than he is fantasy contributor in standard leagues as a lot of his value comes from the fact that he plays a two-way game. If we were to just focus on his offense, then O'Reilly is unlikely to ever significantly surpass his current career-highs of 28 goals and 64 points, which he set in 2013-14. Even factoring in what he brings to the table defensively though, his cap hit is excessive. The Avalanche were justified in trading him rather than concede to his demands.

Brandon Saad has agreed to a six-year, $36 million contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Chicago dealt Saad to Columbus as it wouldn't have been able to meet the restricted free agent's contract demands. Saad had 23 goals and 52 points in 82 contests in 2014-15, so just by that standard, it would seem Columbus is overpaying. That being said, the expectation is that this is a contract Saad will go into. He's just 22 years old (23 in October) and it's not hard to envision $6 million annually looking like a fair price for the majority of this agreement. This also gives the Blue Jackets two very promising young, skilled forwards between Saad and Ryan Johansen.

Jake Allen has agreed to a two-year contract with the St. Louis Blues.

Allen was a restricted free agent after completing his previous two-year, $1.6 million deal. He had a 2.28 GAA and .913 save percentage in 37 contests in 2014-15.

Connor McDavid has agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

No surprise there obviously, but now he's officially on the Edmonton Oilers' roster. He'll get the max allowed under the rules of an entry-level contract. That means he'll earn $925,000 annually and has the potential to achieve $2.85 million annually in signing bonuses.

Slava Voynov has accepted a plea deal on his domestic assault charges and will spend 90 days in jail and serve three years probation.

Voynov plead no contest to a misdemeanor count of corporal injury to a spouse. A violation of his probation would increase his sentence to 364 days. It's not clear what will happen after that for Voynov. He might face deportation and the Kings might also attempt to void his contract, as they recently did with Mike Richards. Currently, Voynov is suspended by both the team and the league.

Martin St. Louis has decided to hang up his skates.

"I have been blessed to play for 16 years in the NHL; it has been an amazing ride," St. Louis said. "I would like to thank the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers organizations and owners for providing me the opportunity to play the sport I love for so many years." St. Louis had 391 goals and 1,033 points in 1,134 games with the Calgary Flames, Lightning, and Rangers. He won the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay award after scoring 38 goals and a league-leading 94 points in 82 contests back in 2003-04. He won the Art Ross Trophy again more than a decade later with 60 points in 48 contests in the lockout shortened 2013 season. He's also a three-time Lady Byng winner and a Stanley Cup champion.

Brad Richards has agreed to a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

Richards will earn a base salary of $3 million, but that can climb to $4 million after factoring in bonuses. He had 12 goals and 37 points in 76 contests in 2014-15. It's worth keeping an eye on him during training camp to see who he's playing with, but he's not likely to have much fantasy value in 2015-16.

The Red Wings have signed UFA rearguard Mike Green to a three-year deal, $18 million.

Even though he can't stay healthy for a prolonged period of time and has defensive shortcomings, Green is still a very valuable NHL defenseman. He is even more valuable as a fantasy player due to his scoring capability and his ability to run a power play. We see Green as a nice fit for the Red Wings as he is provides a much-needed right-handed shot from the point and wouldn't be surprised if he averages .65 points per game. The question is, how many games will he play?

The Buffalo Sabres have signed Jack Eichel to a three-year/entry level deal.

You can assume that Eichel will get the maximum possible under the CBA. Eichel will be a top-two center for the Sabres this season and will be their top center for the years to come after taking over from Ryan O'Reilly who will eventually move to the second line. Look for Eichel to get 45-60 points this season, not too shabby for an 18-year-old.

Zack Kassian has been traded to Montreal, along with a fifth-round pick, in exchange for Brandon Prust.

Kassian generated 10 goals and 16 points in 42 games with Vancouver last season. He also added 81 penalty minutes and 88 hits. He sat out the last 14 games of the year and the playoffs with a back injury.

The New York Rangers have named Jeff Gorton as their new General Manager.

Former GM Glen Sather has stepped down to allow Gorton to take over the job but will remain as the club president. The Toronto Maple Leafs were denied permission to talk to Gorton about their GM's job earlier in the month and now you know why.
