Johan Hedberg agrees with NHL goaltending supervisor Kay Whitmore that goalie equipment could use some adjusting.

"Not so much with the pads and gloves, but it's in the chest protectors and pants where there's plenty of room to move," Hedberg said. "Some guys look like they're 250 pounds when they're really 175." The New Jersey backup added that shrinking the size of leg pads could be risky because it could lead to more injuries. The highest-scoring teams in the league average just over three goals per game this season, so it's become commonplace to assess goaltending equipment as a solution to increase goal totals.

Patrice Bergeron will play in Game 5 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Bergeron missed Game 4 because of an upper-body issue, but he's good to go tonight. The 32-year-old is centering David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand. He has five assists in three games during the postseason.
Apr 21 - 7:50 PM

Nicklas Backstrom scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, and he added an assist in Game 5 against Columbus.

Backstrom tied the game at 1-1 back in the first period and he gave Washington a 3-2 series lead with his fourth career playoff overtime marker. He picked up an assist on a power-play goal by T.J. Oshie. Backstrom has two goals and six assists through five postseason matches against Columbus.

Nikita Kucherov netted the game-winning goal in Game 5 to send Tampa Bay into the second round and eliminate the New Jersey Devils.

Kucherov provided an important insurance goal at the 12:27 mark of the third period and it ended up being the game winner after New Jersey got a goal from Patrick Maroon with three minutes remaining. Kucherov scored five goals in the series and he generated nine points in five contests. Tampa Bay will host Boston or Toronto in the second round.

Philadelphia did not provide an update on the status of Ivan Provorov, which is a little concerning.

Provorov went hard into the boards on Friday night just before Sean Couturier's goal and may have hurt his shoulder. He was back on the ice for his next shift for a few seconds before he left following Michal Neuvirth's glove save on Sidney Crosby. An update on Provorov may not come until close to puck drop on Sunday afternoon. He would be a big loss for the Flyers if he is unable to play in Game 6.

Patrick Eaves is expected to be ready by mid-October, according to Ducks GM Bob Murray.

Eavesm underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum last month. He was injured during his rehab after he was diagnosed with Gullain-Barre Syndrome, which is a muscle-weakening autoimmune disorder, earlier this season. Eaves is healthy now, according to Murray, after he skated in only two games in 2017-18.

Ryan Callahan (upper body) will play Saturday afternoon.

Callahan, who missed two games due to an upper-body injury, was on the fourth line alongside Chris Kunitz and Credric Paquette during the line rushes at the pregame warmups, while Cory Conacher was the odd man out. Conacher is officially listed as a scratch.

Stefan Noesen won't play in Game 5 on Saturday due to a lower-body injury.

Coach John Hynes said the Devils' lineup may have a game-time decision and it turns out Noesen will sit and Jesper Bratt will play instead.
Apr 21 - 2:56 PM

Alexander Wennberg (upper body) will be back in lineup on Saturday afternoon.

Wennberg hasn't played since Game 1 against Washington because of an upper-body injury. He scored a goal in that contest before he was injured. Sonny Milano will be scratched to make room for Wennberg's return.
Apr 21 - 1:58 PM

Sami Vatanen (upper body) will not play in Game 5 on Saturday afternoon.

Mirco Mueller will be in the lineup against Tampa Bay instead. Vatanen was injured this past Wednesday on a hard hit from Nikita Kucherov. He was not able to travel with the team.
Apr 21 - 1:10 PM

Cory Schneider will start Game 5 against Washington.

That shouldn't come as a surprise, as Schneider has been superb in his previous two starts in the playoffs. He has posted a 1-1 record with a 1.67 goals-against average and .951 save percentage against Tampa Bay. The Devils need a win to stay alive in the postseason.
Apr 21 - 1:06 PM

Joe Thornton (knee) may not be ready to play in Game 1 of the second round against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Thornton has been skating with his teammates, but he apparently does not appear to be up to full speed yet. Against a fast and relentless checking team like the Golden Knights, Thornton may be at a disadvantage if he were to rejoin the San Jose lineup before he can skate at his maximum. There's still some time for that to change, though.
