Although Joffrey Lupul isn't seeking a second opinion after failing his physical, it now sounds like the NHL will ask an independent doctor to medically evaluate him.

Lupul failed his physical with the Maple Leafs, but then claimed on his Instagram account that the Leafs cheated. He deleted that post and apologized in a statement, calling his response "inappropriate." He added that he will not be seeking a second opinion despite the fact that it would have been within his rights to do so.

Torey Krug sustained a non-displaced fracture to the jaw when he was struck by the puck on Tuesday.

Krug is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks as a result. That unfortunately means that he'll miss the start of the season as well as the remainder of training camp. If he is out for the minimum of three weeks then he'll only miss three regular season contests. He had eight goals and 51 points in 81 games last season.

Vincent Trocheck sustained an upper-body injury in Tuesday's preseason game, but it's not believed to be serious.

"I don't think it's anything serious," coach Bob Boughner said. "He's going to get re-evaluated today, but I expect him back at practice for the next couple days." Trocheck scored a goal and logged just 6:49 of ice time before he was forced to leave the contest.

Matthew Tkachuk (hip) won't play Wednesday night.

Tkachuk also won't be available to practice. He was removed from Sunday's session for precautionary reasons because of a hip problem. Tkachuk still has time to recover before the start of the season, but this could become worrisome if the issue continues to linger.
Sep 20 - 12:37 PM

Alexander Steen will miss the rest of training camp because of a hand injury.

Steen was injured in the Blues' first preseason game Tuesday in Dallas and he will be re-evaluated in three weeks. He generated 16 goals and 51 points in 76 games last season.

Torey Krug exited Tuesday's exhibition match after he was hit in the face by a deflected puck.

Krug left at the 8:57 mark of the second period and he did not return. He was paired with rookie Charlie McAvoy in the contest. Stay tuned for updates on Krug's status.

Claude Giroux was serving as a left winger during Tuesday's practice.

Sean Couturier served as the center on the line while Jakub Voracek played on the right side. Giroux typically plays as a center, but training camp is the time to experiment with different roles. "We did a lot of drills where I was coming down the left side there," Giroux said. "I can see the ice pretty good from there because you have the puck on your good side. It was actually a lot of fun. It’s not like I'm against it or I’m not happy with it if it makes the team better. I know we have a lot of centermen. I’m up for the idea for sure." There are reasons why shifting Giroux to the wing could make sense for Philadelphia. It would potentially allow them to have Couturier play as a top-six forward, which might lead to getting more offense out of him. It also would make it easier to fit second overall pick Nolan Patrick into the lineup. Despite those factors though, it's too early to say if Giroux will indeed shift positions this season.

Brian Boyle has been away from the Devils because of a type of cancer of the bone marrow.

New Jersey Devils Dr. Michael Farber said that Boyle's issue is treatable. He will take oral medication to treat the CML (chronic myeloid leukemia), which was caught early, and expects to be in the opening night lineup this season. We wish him the best and hope to see him playing on Oct. 7.

Roman Josi has been named the Predators' eighth captain in franchise history.

Josi is also the second Swiss-born captain in league history. He has led the Predators in ice time per game in each of the past three years. Josi accounted for 12 goals and 49 points in 72 matches last season. Nashville also announced that Ryan Ellis will serve as "associate captain," while Ryan Johansen, Filip Forsberg and Mattias Ekholm will be alternate captains.
