Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) says he's still "a few more days" from returning to the New Jersey Devils' lineup.

Kovalchuk took part in his first practice Tuesday since suffering a shoulder injury March 23. Kovalchuk took some shots, did some skating and participated as a penalty killer during special teams drills late in practice. He has been skating on his own so his conditioning should be OK, but Kovalchuk admitted he still hasn't taken a slap shot, which would put strain on the injured shoulder. The good news is coach Pete DeBoer admitted the Devils won't wait until Kovalchuk is 100 percent because of the rush to make the playoffs. That also means he'll be playing in a limited capacity when he returns, but at least fantasy owners will get something instead of nothing.

Aleksander Barkov has been nominated for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

The trophy is awarded "to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability." Should he win the award, he'll join Brian Campbell (2012) as the only winners in franchise history.

Valeri Nichushkin will indeed play in Game 2 against St. Louis, now that Patrick Eaves is sidelined with a foot injury.

While Eaves is considered day-to-day, he was seen on crutches on Saturday. Nichushkin has no points through five games this postseason, and just two in 11 career playoff games.

Logan Couture popped another pair of goals as San Jose took Game 1 over Nashville 5-2.

Through the first six games of his postseason, only once has Couture been held off the stat sheet. With the goals he's now up to points in three straight, with three goals and eight points in all.

Brent Burns extended his multi-point streak to three games during Friday's 5-2 Game 1 win over Nashville.

Burns collected a pair of helpers, along with six shots plus three hits and blocks during his 25:08 of work. He now has eight assists during the postseason, giving him the lead in that category and pulling him within one point of John Tavares' lead in points (11).

Martin Jones continued his strong play during Friday's Game 1 victory over Nashville.

Jones turned away 29 of 31 shots, including three of four on the kill. It's worth noting that the second goal was initially deflected off course by Brent Burns before it hit the unsuspecting Ryan Johansen, and going in. No matter, Jones and the Sharks came away with the 5-2 win.
Apr 30 - 1:47 AM

Radek Faksa scored the game-winning goal in Friday's 2-1 win over the Blues in Game 1.

Faksa also picked up the primary assist on Antoine Roussel's opening goal in the second period. Faksa potted him the go-ahead goal with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. The 22-year-old has two goals and four points in seven postseason games this year. The Stars now lead the best-of-seven series 1-0. Game 2 goes Sunday afternoon in Dallas.

Two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson has been nominated once again.

The trophy is awarded to the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-around ability at the position. Karlsson, the defending Norris Trophy winner, had his best campaign yet this season. He set personal and Ottawa Senators records from the blue line with 66 assists and 82 points over all 82 games, along with 84 hits and 175 blocks. Karlsson led all defenders in assists and points this season, and ranked fourth-best among blue liners with a 7.2 Corsi relative percentage.

The Anaheim Ducks have fired head coach Bruce Boudreau.

Boudreau has a 1-7 record in Game 7s and you can debate whether or not he's to blame for that or even if that was on the Ducks' minds when they decided to fire him, but it would be hard to argue there's not a clear link between that record and Anaheim's decision to let him go. The reality is that the Ducks have seen four straight playoff runs end in a Game 7 loss and if Anaheim had won one or two of those, thus allowing them to go further into the playoffs, perhaps that would have been enough to save Boudreau. Because if nothing else, this can't be about his regular season results. Sure the Ducks got off to a rough start in the 2015-16 campaign, but they rebounded in a big way. Anaheim had a 208-104-40 regular season record under Boudreau and have won their division for four straight years under him. They just couldn't get it done in the playoffs, which was also the case with Washington when Boudreau was overseeing them.

Patrice Bergeron has been named a finalist for the Selke Trophy, as the NHL's best defensive forward.

He has won the award three times in the last four years, including the last two seasons. Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar and Ryan Kesler of the Anaheim Ducks are the other finalists.

T.J. Oshie came through in a gigantic way for the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, scoring the overtime winner in Game 1 against Pittsburgh, his third goal of the game.

In 36 career playoff games, Oshie's team had never won when he's scored in the post-season. Oshie halted the streak in tremendous fashion in his seventh post-season game for the Capitals, lighting the lamp at three crucial moments during a tense Game 1. The Penguins and Capitals tangle again for Game 2 on Saturday night.
Apr 28 - 11:44 PM

Brooks Orpik (upper body) is expected to be in the lineup for Game 1 against the Penguins.

Orpik was injured in Game 3 of Washington's first round series against the Flyers after he was hit by Ryan White. It appears as though he's good to go ahead of tonight's game against Pittsburgh. Orpik is currently on the ice for warmups and he's skating on a pairing with John Carlson.
