Joni Pitkanen's procedure on his broken heel bone was apparently successful, according to Carolina GM Jim Rutherford.

It was reported that the success of the surgery may not be known for a few months, but Rutherford has heard that it went well. Pitkanen is projected to be ready to go next fall for training camp.

Devan Dubnyk blocked 35 shots in the Coyotes’ 2-1 shootout win over the Ducks on Saturday night.

The Ducks held a slight shot-attempt advantage for the game, so Phoenix wasn’t totally outplayed in this one, outside of the third period when he made 17 saves. Still, the Coyotes have found themselves a goalie and Mike Smith should not get a start unless it’s a back-to-back and Dubnyk needs a breather. Dubnyk gave up the goal in the first period, and he has allowed just one goal in two straight games, both wins. He owns a 2.52 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.

Braden Holtby blanked the Penguins on 31 saves Saturday night in the Capitals’ 3-0 win.

There really has never been a better time to own the Capitals goaltender as Holtby is playing some of his most consistent hockey. He has just one loss in his last five games, with a sterling .933 save percentage in December and eight wins. Overall, he is 16-8-5 with a 2.22 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

Gustav Nyquist scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Red Wings defeated the Senators on Saturday night 3-2.

Nyquist’s individual effort on this play was tremendous as he skated two laps around the Senators defensive zone and held onto the puck for nearly 30 seconds before firing a wrister past Craig Anderson. He has shown that he has a nose for the net, now with 43 goals in his last 93 games at the NHL level. The goal was his first since Dec. 12, however, as he has scored at a high clip despite a middling 86 shots on goal. He has 15 goals and 23 points this season. Henrik Zetterberg registered a goal and a helper, while Justin Abdelkader got the other marker. Niklas Kronwall picked up two assists.
Dec 27 - 10:23 PM

Scott Hartnell potted two goals to help lead the Blue Jackets to a 6-2 win over the Bruins on Saturday night.

Hartnell had missed just over two weeks because of a broken finger. He scored the game’s first goal and the Blue Jackets’ second as well. The rugged winger has eight goals and 19 points this season and should remain an asset in fantasy leagues. Kevin Connauton also enjoyed a stellar night, with a goal and two helpers. Other goal scorers included Matt Calvert (goal, assist), Jeremy Morin and Nick Foligno. Jack Johnson got two helpers.
Dec 27 - 10:04 PM

Derek Stepan tallied his third career hat trick to power the Rangers to a 3-1 win over the Devils on Saturday night.

Stepan scored one in each period — shorthanded, on the power play and via the empty net. The 24-year-old center is on a five-game points streak, which has seen his numbers climb to six goals and 22 points in 21 games, so he’s definitely setting himself up for a career season. Martin St. Louis had two assists, while Dan Boyle and Carl Hagelin picked up one apiece. The Rangers have won eight games in a row.
Dec 27 - 9:43 PM

Kings general manager Dean Lombardi has asked Justin Williams’ camp for "a little more time" to work out an extension, according to HNIC’s Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman says that Williams "had a soft deadline of next week." Williams, 33, is enjoying a solid season in Los Angeles, with eight goals and 19 points. He’s also a darling of advanced stat community for his puck-possession prowess. Williams is in the last season of a four-year deal that carried a $3.65 million cap hit.

Patric Hornqvist suffered an injury to his foot/ankle after getting hit by a teammate’s shot.

Just what the Penguins need: more injuries. Hornqvist had three shots on goal in 6:26. Scott Harrington’s shot struck him in the ankle/foot area, and he returned briefly but ultimately left for the dressing room. Hornqvist has excelled in his first season with the Penguins, tallying 13 goals and 29 points. The hope here is that it’s nothing but a bruise.
Dec 27 - 9:01 PM

The Anaheim Ducks won't have Corey Perry in the lineup on Saturday night and it doesn't sound like he'll play on Sunday, either.

Perry is dealing with a knee injury. On the bright side, Perry might at least skate with Anaheim on Sunday morning. He's been effective as usual when healthy in 2014-15: 14 goals, 22 points and 33 PIM in 22 games.
Dec 27 - 6:15 PM

Ben Bishop will get the nod Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Updating an earlier report, Ben Bishop will be the starting goalie for the Lightning Saturday night against the 'Canes. Bishop has been out since December 15th when he suffered a lower-body-injury but is feeling well enough to take the ice this evening. When healthy, Bishop is one of the league's best, so get him back in your lineup as soon as you can.
Dec 27 - 5:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that defenseman Olli Maatta should return to action "within the next month."

He's been nursing an upper-body injury, which was a process that was exasperated by a case of mumps. He also had a cancerous tumor removed earlier this season, so 2014-15 has been trying for the young defenseman (to say the least). He generated nine points in 20 games this season, but hasn't been able to play since Dec. 6.
Dec 27 - 12:50 PM

In a strange development, the New Jersey Devils will essentially employ Scott Stevens and Adam Oates as "co-coaches" through the 2014-15 season.

Beyond that, there are no guarantees (and Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is known for unusual coaching decisions, in general). It's difficult to tell what kind of impact this situation will have on the broader fantasy picture in New Jersey, although Oates could conceivably given the Devils' PP unit a boost.
