Alex Ovechkin scored a goal and an assist in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ovechkin registered the primary assist on Evgeny Kuznetsov's goal just 17 seconds into the game. He then added a tally of his own 28 seconds into the third frame to make it 2-0 for his team. Unfortunately for the Capitals, the Penguins ended up scoring three consecutive goals in the third frame. Ovechkin finished the game with a three shots on goal, three hits and one takeaway in 18:39 of ice time. The 32-year-old now has six goals and 10 points in seven games this postseason. The Capitals trail the best-of-seven series 1-0.

Sidney Crosby scored a goal and an assist in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals.

The Penguins were down 2-0 early in the third period, but they managed to score three goals in a row to close out the game. Crosby scored the game-tying goal at the 5:20 mark of the third frame and he registered the only assist on Jake Guentzel's game-winning tally. The Penguins captain finished the night with a plus-1 rating, three shots on goal, one hit and three blocked shots in 19:25 of ice time. The 30-year-old has seven goals and 15 points in seven games this postseason. The Penguins now have a 1-0 lead in this best-of-seven series.

Connor McDavid has been selected as a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award.

McDavid took home the award last year. He finished the regular season with 41 goals and a league high 108 points in 82 games. The 21-year-old hasn't received much Hart Trophy buzz this season, but that's mainly because his team didn't make the playoffs. Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon and New Jersey's Taylor Hall were the other two nominees for the Lindsay Award.

Nathan MacKinnon has been nominated for the Ted Lindsay Award.

The award is given to "the most outstanding player in the NHL," as voted by the players. MacKinnon had a terrific year, as he had 39 goals and 97 points in 74 games this season. New Jersey's Taylor Hall and Edmonton's Connor McDavid were also nominated for the award this season.

Nico Hischier went through the whole season with a chronic wrist/hand injury.

That makes the fact that Hischier scored 20 goals and 52 points in 82 games as a rookie all the more impressive. He's going to have the area immobilized for the next two-to-four weeks, but if that's the extent of what he needs, then this shouldn't impact his summer training.

Flyers GM Ron Hextall is hoping to re-sign Valtteri Filppula.

Filppula is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his five-year, $25 million contract. He had 11 goals and 33 points in 81 contests in 2017-18. Filppula is the only pending UFA that Hextall has informed that he'd like to re-sign, though we imagine that the Flyers are looking to sign him at a reduced rate compared to his previous contract.

Andrew Shaw underwent knee surgery Wednesday and he may not be ready to play when the 2018-19 season begins.

Shaw is expected to need a minimum of six months to recover. He sustained the injured knee and a concussion back on March 13 against Dallas. Shaw skated in 51 games in 2017-18, while generating 10 goals, 10 assists and 53 penalty minutes.

As previously reported that Wayne Simmonds played through 2017-18 with a torn pelvis, but that was just the tip of the ice berg.

Simmonds also suffered a fractured ankle, pulled groin, two mouth injuries, and a torn ligament in his thumb. Out of all of those issues, only the torn ligament in his thumb removed him from the lineup and even then, he still played through 75 regular season games and the Flyers' six playoff contests. All we can say is: Wow. He did see his production dip in 2017-18, but that's hardly surprising given all he had to endure. If he can stay healthy next season then he should bounce back.

Zach Werenski revealed that he had been playing through a shoulder injury.

Werenski was dealing with the issue for at least half the season. "Obviously I want to play," Werenski said. "I missed a little time at Christmas there. That’s all I needed to feel good enough to play, but it definitely sucked for sure. I’d like to think every night I go out there I’m 100 percent. The truth is I wasn’t. I had to accept that as a hockey player and a competitor. We’re going to work to fix it and figure it out with management and the training staff what to do to be 100 percent next year." Werenski recorded 47 points as a rookie, but he took a bit of a step back in his sophomore season with 16 goals and 37 points in 77 contests. Perhaps that shoulder injury is part of the reason for that offensive dip.

Tuukka Rask allowed four goals on 24 shots during Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 7.

Rask allowed two goals in the first 6:12 of the game and he followed that up by giving up two more goals on six shots in the second frame. The Bruins went into the third period trailing 4-3, but they managed to come back because Rask turned aside all eight shots he faced and because they scored four unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes. The Bruins netminder now has a 4-3 record with a 2.94 goals-against-average and a .899 save percentage this postseason. Boston will now take on Tampa Bay in the second round. They'll need Rask to be a whole lot better if they want to make it past the Bolts.
