After a great deal of speculation, the Tampa Bay Lightning will use a compliance buyout on Vincent Lecavalier.

"Vinny has been a significant reason for many of our past successes, including the 2004 Stanley Cup, and his contributions to the community are immeasurable," said GM Steve Yzerman in a statement. "The Lightning organization is indebted to Vinny; we thank him for all he has done here and we wish him well as he moves forward. After much internal deliberation, we believe this will prove to be a pivotal move for us as we strive to achieve our long term goal of competing at the highest level, year-in, year-out. The economics and structure of the CBA are necessitating this decision and we at the Lightning are excited at the newly created opportunities this presents to us." He had $45 million left over seven seasons on his 11-year, $85 million contract. The buyout will cost the Bolts $30 million over the next 14 years and Lecavalier will become an unrestricted free agent.

Chris Kunitz scored a pair of goals in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kunitz opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 2:31 mark of the third period and added his second of the game less than seven minutes later. The 37-year-old has seen his numbers dip quite a bit over the last couple of years and it's unlikely they'll climb higher this season. Kunitz will only be a fantasy option in deeper leagues.

Aaron Ekblad (upper body) has received medical clearance to play.

It was feared that Ekblad could miss the start of the season after he suffered an upper-body injury at the World Cup of Hockey, but after he returned to Florida for evaluation he seemed to be fine. Ekblad should be back on the ice with his teammates soon.

Dennis Seidenberg will reportedly sign with the New York Islanders.

TSN's Darren Dreger expects Seidenberg to join the Islanders after the World Cup of Hockey. It will reportedly be a one-year contract worth $1 million.
Sep 28 - 1:07 PM

Kyle Quincey has agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,250,000.

In 47 games with Detroit last season, he collected 11 points, 49 hits and 62 blocks. Quincey will be a depth player for the Devils in 2016-17, but he did get a one-way deal.
Sep 28 - 12:45 PM

Auston Matthews skated between James van Riemsdyk and Leo Komarov in his first session with the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The trio just arrived from participating in the World Cup of Hockey and Toronto is split into two groups for practices, but Matthews on the top line isn't an unlikely scenario for the start of the season. The first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft impressed at the World Cup on the top line alongside Connor McDavid.
Sep 28 - 12:13 PM

Andrew Shaw will have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Thursday.

He picked up two majors and a game misconduct on Tuesday night in an exhibition game against Washington when he hit Capitals defenseman Connor Hobbs from behind into the end boards. Shaw dropped the gloves with Nathan Walker before he was sent off the ice.

Vladimir Sobotka will indeed play in the KHL in 2016-17.

He has reported to Avangard Omsk after attempting to rejoin the Blues for the upcoming NHL campaign. Sobotka will play the final season of his KHL contract, so St. Louis will have to wait another year.
Sep 28 - 11:52 AM

As expected, Connor McDavid rejoined the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

McDavid had three assists in three games with Team North America during the World Cup. Now that he's back with the Oilers, he skated alongside Milan Lucic and Jordan Eberle. It wouldn't be shocking to see that trio on the ice together in Edmonton's season opener as well.
Sep 28 - 5:03 AM

Brad Marchand scored a goal and an assist in Team Canada's 3-1 win over Team Europe in Game 1 of the World Cup Final.

Marchand opened the scoring 2:33 into the game and he added an assist on Patrice Bergeron's third period goal. The Bruins forward finished the game with a plus-1 rating, four penalty minutes, four shots on goal and one hit in 17:27 of ice time. Marchand has had an incredible tournament so far. He has four goals and three assists in five contests. Steven Stamkos scored the game-winner for Canada. They'll look to sweep the best-of-three series on Thursday night.
Sep 27 - 11:17 PM

Alexander Radulov scored a goal and an assist in his first game with the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2. Radulov opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period and he assisted on Nathan Beaulieu's power play goal in the same frame. Radulov will be a risky fantasy play this year, as he's making his way back to the NHL after a long stint in the KHL. As excited as some people might get over this performance, we have to remember that this was just a preseason game against mediocre competition. Radulov will be a boom-or-bust fantasy option in standard leagues this season.
Sep 27 - 10:39 PM

Marc-Andre Fleury allowed three goals on 19 shots in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

He played the first two periods of the game before being replaced by Casey Desmith at the start of the third period. It's not an ideal result for a guy who's battling Matt Murray for the starting gig. Regardless of tonight's outcome, we have to remember that this is just one preseason game. Fleury has plenty of time to redeem himself for this mediocre performance.
